Title: Type of hinges for opening tops
Post by: mk1 on March 24, 2013, 07:39:35 am
Hi has anybody got a picture of the top of the engine covers  that were on the [dogs kennel] of the early motorised Lifeboat. I am looking for a picture of the top that has 3 hinges on each top and both tops could be opened upwards  together. I want to see how the hinges worked as on my plan they do not show how they are made or work.

Thanks in advance John

John,
just checked my photos of the Thomas Kirk Wright, and I seem to have photographed everything but the hinges you are after, probably because both sides of the kennel were open.Sorry mate cant help on this one!

Aside from the Thomas Kirk Wright, the only boat that comes to mind that a) still has a dog kennel and b) looks like it did in service is the James Stevens No. 14, but that has modern hinges.

So sorry, but I can't help either.

I knew I had this photo somewhere...it's taken from Model Boats mag some many years ago, and credit must go to the magazine..............these  models were made by the eminent Keith Young, a master classic model lifeboat builder and are of Rosabella and Thomas Kirk Wright, and just about show the hinges on the engine covers.

the Hastings lifeboat is in the Hastings lifeboat house, but I don't think keith Young's models have ever been on a circuit as such, and I have never seen them other than in the model Boat mags.
