How come they are so rare thesedays- too expensive to run or there is no need for them?

main reasions
to expensive to run. A lot ran on gas turbines which just east fuel. More expensive to build and maintain.
There has been a lot of developments in fast cats. The Stena HSS can do 50+ knots at full power and take trucks so no real reasion for Hydrofoil.
I have only ever been on one. It was an ex russian desin that run out of the former Yugoslavia to an island in the adriactic sea

Don't know whether the "Flying Dolphins" are still operating from Piraeus  but they were a bit good.

The Condor hydrofoils were a common sight around the Channel Islands. They went past my father's 27 knot boat as if it was standing still! They trouble was they were designed for Russian rivers and could not cope with much of sea state.

The "Flying Dolphins" were operating back in May 2011 when I went sailing around the Saronic area of Greece. I took a trip on one to Hydra and the GPS recorded 34 Knots. I'm going back there in September, if there still going I'll have to take another trip on one.

There is a service between Amsterdam and Ijmuiden that run about every 30 minutes.
More like an aircraft in seating than boat. Ride was quick, but surprisingly bumpy.

Vietnam still run them on some rivers, this ones on the Saigon River.
Once ran them Phu Quoc Island to the mainland, but withdrew as not suitable for the sea conditions.

Is there still only one truck on Hydra RMH? Was amusing sat outside a café with all the harbour shops closed, and then everything opened, just in time for a Med Cruise liner to dock. Half an hours rapid trading and then everything closed as the gangplank was raised.
 
  Didn't manage the Monastery but did the highest point above the middle of the Harbour and the big "Hill" with the TV mast on it on the RHS of it.

Yes still just the one truck for collecting the rubbish. I wandered for ages around the town and up the hill. Must be a nightmare being a postie there, no street names and a street map if there is one would be impossible to follow. Hoping to go back there in September it's a nice place to visit.

There are still hydrofoils running on Lake Garda in northern Italy.
