My son and I are looking to buy an airbrush compressor for his military models and my ship models. as we build indooors, sometimes on the kitchen table we'd need a compressor as slilent as possible. I'm sure they all make some noise but has anyone found a particualry silent one

You could always use a portable air tank (some times called an "air pig").

I used to pump up an old tyre and use that as a tank for small jobs.

What we would be looking for would be something that could be taken out used and put away again without too much fuss.(apart from the cleaning!)
I'm guessing the use of an "air pig" would be to charge it up or keep it charged. But we would still need to have a compressor to do that there are plenty on e-bay in our price range (£70ish pounds) but noise is a deciding factor. I'm not keen (well the wife wont be ) on having an tyre in the house either . sorry Grendel :-)

The beauty of an "air pig" is that you don't need your own compressor. I imagine your local petrol service stations have air available for blowing up tires, use that. Or if you know someone with a compressor in their garage, charge it at their place. A reasonable size tank will last you quite a while.

Could you not place the compressor outside and run the pipe back in the kitchen ?

I have something similar to the first shown which is very quiet, but needs a reservoir.

If you keep an eye on flea bay , "bambi" compressors found in dentist's sometimes come up . Simair or jun air are other searches .They all use a fridge comprssor TYPE motor so they're pretty quiet. As stated earlier try to get one with an air tank ,it stops the air pulsing .

Hi, go to the TIP and get an old fridge/freezer, strip out the unit and there you go. As these run in an oil bath you have to use an oil filter. A lot of model engineers use these when at shows for powering the steam engines. We used a Bambi in our surgery, that is how quiet they are. Saves all the pipework from the compressor downstairs. Thanks I'd heard of folk using fridge compressors but wasnt sure how to do it or what bits to use,,,, are you aware of any guides ? I did try google but it comes up with all sorts of weired and wonderful ideas. I think keep it basic is the key !

The AS18 compressor I have for sale in the Classifieds section is not too bad noisewise
