Hi bob,we have a shop over here called poundland(£1)the glue i use is glu & fix all purpose(clear) extra strong made by "bostick",they also sell 5 min epoxy still only a £1
.baloo(martin)
-
Fibre class carbody filler :-)) rough up the area first with a file or coarse grit sandpaper tack frame in place with superglue mix the bodyfiller then aply some superglue around the frame then aply the filler sets like concrete plus helps with ballest weight
-
True, bodyfiller is awesome as a filling glue, I also use it for motor mounts but it's got to be reasonably good stuff, some brands down here are awfull.
If you already have superglue and araldite then as mentioned scuff the area thoroughly with some sandpaper till theres no shine left on the plastic, then tack the frames in place with your superglue then reinforce with a bead of araldite.

By the way Sikaflex is the most amazing adhesive known to man but a bit of overkill for a model, One of the fishing trawlers I fitted out allowed no physical fasteners so the whole galley kitchen and wheelhouse cabinetry was held in with nothing more than Sikaflex.

ok guys thanks for the info
yer sika is totaling amazing stuff we use it instead of welding 2mm sheet metal to
i have pinned it all with SG (but it doesn't like flexing or a sharp jolt ) so ill just run a bead of sika round it now
cheers Bob

Hello,
Which Sika Flex? there seems to be many of them (Sika Flex 222UV, 227 etc.), are you talking about the one labeled Sika Flex Construction Sealant ?
Thanks,
Hany

the marine sika 291 $$$$$$$$$$
yes there a lot of them on the market now
i dont know how the construction stuff would go probably ok
make sure you freeze the remainder after you open the tube it goes off even in the fridge

im trying the water based Construction Sealant over night to see how good it is ( bit of 3 ply on to some plasticard )
[/size]its very cheap $3 a tube and easy to work with
-
the water based construction sealant is a FAIL on the plastic card holds very well on the timber but just peels off the plastic even when sanded
needs something to MELT into the plastic ??

There is a glue that Graupner have long recommended for building their "plastic" hulled kits
It is called Stabilit Express. It is a two part product, a powder and a resin which are mixed in proportion. While it is quite expensive, it sticks virtually anything to ABS or similar "slippy" plastic hull materials. I have used it on two such kits with great sucess. It is super for any areas where any stress occurs. Slightly roughing the plastic before application makes it an even better joint

wow it not cheap that's for sure
thanks

If it's any help to you I glued the frames into my Amsterdam hull using 5 minute Araldite, way back in 2003, and it's still going strong O0 Just be sure to roughen the areas where the frames will be glued.

hi mate
i have done the frames with sikaflex urethane adhesive was wondering what else works on ( holding the deck s on )
i found 5min araldite is no good on plasticard even if ruffed up it just peels off
ABS must be different ??
-
OK HERE IS THE UPDATE
after i tested all 4 products on the inside 0f the hull after sanding and wiping with epoxy thinner
on ABS sicka marine , sicka construction (water based) adhesives sticks like s#$^#@it to a blanket , so does 5min araldite and car bog
so ABS is way different to the plastic card ( folder covers ) i was trying to use as a test
epoxy thinner melts ABS to
is the stuff you guys call plasticard ABS sheets ?? or just 1xmm plastic folder book covers ??
-
The folder covers you refer to are a different type of plastic altogether, and are very difficult to glue - as you have discovered. I don't know the proper name for the particular plastic they are made from, but I'm sure someone else will.
Plasticard is a brand name for a type of styrene sheet marketed by Slaters (I think). I bought the styrene sheet I use from a supplier in Ballina who gets it from a manufacturer in Brisbane. It comes in sheets 2.4m by 1.2m in different thicknesses - I have used 1.5mm and 2mm - and is surprisingly cheap; I bought a half sheet of each thickness and they only cost me about $30 altogether.

thanks peter
ill have to try the local styrene retailer and see if they have any in black
cheers Bob

If you have one locally/nearby, try a sign maker who makes 'plastic' signs, generally you can get off cuts for next to nothing, they also use clear perspex. O0 O0
