Anyone going back from here anywhere near Hoddesden In hertfordshire EN11 to be more precise and your in a car with room for a large box get in touch 01606 891999 as there is fuel money in it..
As for the list of traders we always for commercial reasons avoid publishing a full list I am quite happy to explain in a pm or phone call why
However put it this way there is more traders at this show than as the saying goes 'you can shake a stick at' (we know cause we have counted them) if you cant find what your looking for here or something very similar

STOP PRESS
Forgot to mention we will for 2014 and the dates are confirmed as 25th and 26th of October 2014 be donating a prize to the winning club stand at Blackpool not only will they win the award for best stand and the coveted trophy that goes with it The show has also now been sponsored and as such there will be a prize of £100.00 to go to the best club stand.
We have just announced this for the Nationals at Coalville for 2014 and would have been announcing for Blackpool 2014 but as this years show is so close felt it wise to say now....Now we haven't got it organised for this years show but in view of whats to come next year how about for the best club stand this year 2013 a decent radio set they can raffle of will be given ...
Finally and as ever to scotch all the rumors clubs or groups exhibiting as ever are welcome to a free allocation of tickets and we do not charge clubs for exhibiting in any shape or form...We never will.... As for the rumors of charging for chairs or tables they are simply that misguided rumors started of usually by competitors I guess
-
you'll always have the rumour mongers, Mark..........
best thing is always to ignore those who speculate in them, come along and enjoy superb show as it always is, and meet old acquaintances.

is every one taken a touch as the lighting is rubbish.unless doing a night sail.

I don't think the poor lighting is an excuse for taking a touch Howard :o - you''ll get more than moderated for that. :police:

there's now't wrong with the lighting..............it hides all the defects on my boats.......... {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
We did say in the early afternoon "let there be light", and the new extra lighting lit up. Another elderly rumour scotched, but I bet it reappears next year.
Sorry, Neil, your defects are now plain to see. And, of course, no excuses for touching.

I tell you what I find difficult Howard ... Restaurants - none of them seem to use more than a 5watt bulb. How anyone reads the menu is beyond me.
-
plenty of lights on the models to light your way! After you have been in the hall for five minutes you get used to the light anyway, I have never taken any notice of it!
PS It might be a little darker tomorrow morning first thing,as I hope to clean off Neils 3 magnificent model lifeboats, and that should cause quite a cloud of dust!lol :D :D :D :embarrassed: :embarrassed: {-) {-) {-) {-)

Can't make it this year, take lots of pictures for us please?! :-))

Sorry to say I have to agree with Howard the venue is the pits >>:-( >>:-( .The lighting has been an issue your years with no effort to put things right. As long as the punters come through the door why bother.
I have seen some nice models but the venue never has and never will do them justice.

Beg to differ as i am here are you think not

do please organise a show, and show us how you would do it
Best of luck, Neil.
-
It would not bother me if I had to wear a cap lamp to find my way around.
I just love attending these shows especially Blackpool.
If they had to install more lighting for these shows the extra cost
would reflect in the admission fee. pardon the pun
also extra Cost to the traders who I gladly thank for attending,
You can,t please everyone.
john
-
what a sad statement that the lighting is the pits. There are HUNDREDS of people here who will disagree with you.Perhaps the organiser could organise a white stick for you if you bother to come again. If I had a complaint about the show at all,it is that there are hundreds of boats here and hardly anyone is putting them on the water! The LBES team have put on two displays and even I,who have a reputation for not putting anything in the pond have done so this weekend!
Please guys,USE IT OR LOSE IT?
Mick F
-
Showboats in ponds will get wet <*< <:( Whatever next %%
Seriously though If someone has a decent flashgun on
their camera could we have some pictures to 'lighten' the
lives of us who can't make it this year.
Ned
-
well, I took some photos (yes, remembered my camera this year) of a beautiful and IMHO the best lifeboat in the show Thames Class lifeboat...stunning to say the least.
if anyone wants photos of her and there are quite a few I'll post them in the lifeboat section.....a future project for me.
-
Well Howard I thought you where joking. Two people had torches on one of the stands on he left as you entered but to be fair it was the position of the light so high in the hall that made your body cast a shadow on the stall you only had to pick an item up and turn round and it was fine. Most of the stalls had there own lighting where needed.

Love to see the other pics on Lifeboats.

Well I went there today for the first time, and every visitor I spoke to agreed it was dreadful. The organisers need to recognise the standard now set by the Model Boat Convention at Haydock.
Many of the display stands today were empty and the lighting is dismal. I dispute that the show has the greatest number of clubs and traders attending, a list of the actual traders and clubs would set our minds at rest.
Apparently the entry price included a chance to win a boat; how does that work ? No-one issued the visitors with a raffle ticket and there was no-where to record my attendance and enter a draw. Will anyone win and how will they know ?
The stench in the gents toilet was a disgrace and when another guy complained to the staff about it, he was told they always smell and he should visit when the hall is busy !
A paper cup of tea was £2.00 and a limp sausage roll was also £2.00, the fish & chip shop behind the hotel had a long queue of people who were attending the show and refusing to eat there.
The models on display were, as ever, to an exceptional standard and a credit to their builders; it is a pity that they were so let down by this tired hotel which was apparently last re-furbished in the 1960s. It certainly deserves it's recent Tripadvisor rating of 69th out of the 70 Blackpool hotels reviewed. - http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186332-d192734-Reviews-Norbreck_Castle_Hotel-Blackpool_Lancashire_England.html#REVIEWS (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186332-d192734-Reviews-Norbreck_Castle_Hotel-Blackpool_Lancashire_England.html#REVIEWS)
This show needs a new venue, because many people including me won't bother going again until it gets one.
-
Same smell as last year then >>:-(
Ned
-
its a real shame about the venue but the models and trade stand are second to none
some thing has to be done about the venue as i think a lot more will stay away and we will end up losing this show
and how they get £2.00 for a cuppa is just disgusting you dont pay that on motorway services
so come on organizers look at some where different for next year just a thought but a marque down by the lake at fleetwood would be better that way a lot of sailing could be done
-
To all you show knockers you KNOW who you ARE I challenge you the ones who ALLWAYS knock ANY show which you attend to ORGANISE a show .
I KNOW for a FACT you COULDNT so who wants to take me up on it and No it CAN NOT be a show that is organissed by OTHERS £500 says YOU CAN NOT ORGANISE ONE SO come on Kinmel....Netland....Howard....Steam up......Tugs62 ........You ALL have not only critisised the show and venue so come on PROVE me wrong ................I know my money is SAFE as you wouldnt do a better job yourselves.
Dave
-
Not knocking the show or the organisers.
You guys put on a brilliant show
The venue is past it's sell by and you guys that
put all the hard work in deserve better.

No-one doubts it takes a huge effort to arrange such events.
A complaint provides the organisers an opportunity to impress and wild rants impress no-one, it merely re-enforces our belief that nothing will change.
Without changes more and more people will simply not turn up to pay £6 at such a venue.
Instead of jumping on complainants, you would be better served by worrying about the people who won't complain and won't come again anyway.
At least the complaints give you an opportunity to investigate and improve.
-
Ned &Kimmel have said it all its not you guys who do all the hard work Stavros but as been said many times the venue that let the show down and I,ve always had a huge respect for you Stavros but after your silly little boy rant I wonder its people like you why even this site is lossing members remember like you we allhour views to. like we said we was,nt and never would have a go at the great guys who put in the time to put on shows for which we are grateful its the VENUE we question.
Regards Howard.
-
I wasnt knocking the show just the venue talk to people that have paid to stay in the hotel
i live in Blackpool and even the locals say the same the last time the place saw some paint was when a pot was dropped outside
but as i say its not the show and the organisers do a fantastic job ever year but the place is letting us all down look round this year and see how many tables are empty
-
Stavros your response and the venue are the problem >>:-( . I have been to the show on a number of occasions but enough is enough the venue is terrible as is your childish rant says it all.
I take my hat off to the clubs who turn up and try their best to make the most of a bad show some even bringing lighting.
-
My boss always says something that annoys me but in part he is right. A problem is just an opportunity for success. I guess that is true of the venues lighting.
That aside I enjoyed the traders and clubs, spent a few shillings and met some new faces (albeit well lived in faces)... I even had lunch with a guy called Kinmel. Amazing chap - uses that circular circular breathing technique for the didgeridoo - thereby he doesn't need to breathe between sentences {-). Only kidding, we waited ages for lunch and chatted away.
So thanks to the organisers for what they did. I also went and thanked one of the traders for having the best lighting in the room :} The boat I enjoyed most was on the Southport stand; 1:6 Pibber. Had a great chat with the builder too. It was worth the trip for that alone.
I left as the storm started and within minutes water was spurting 18" into the air from drains all over the place. By Wigan the sky had turned blue again, another twenty miles further and I knew the wife was home - I could see the black cloud hanging over the house; it's ok she never goes on Mayhem :-))
Regards Dave
-
The boat I enjoyed most was on the Southport stand; 1:6 Pibber.
No such thing. It is called a PBR. It was never, ever, EVER called a Pibber.
However, you did get something right, the owner was a truly great gent.
-
Yes Sandy, it certainly is a PBR and it wasn't referred to as a Pibber in the navy. It is often referred to as a Pibber now though. Whether that is usage, slang or ignorance I don't know. I can't escape it because my late friend HS93 Peter relentlessly talked me into buying a "Pibber" like his :} So in his memory I guess I'll stick with the colloquial. Sentimental fool that I am.
Dave

I don't want to get into any of this argument, as I enjoy going to the show, and find the hall adequate, but I did notice a goodly area of emptiness about the display stands.
After all, I'm not there to look at the décor of a hotel that was long past it's prime when I was a teenage drinker in the old bar, 40 + years ago,I go to look at the boats and trade stands and meet friends and acquaintances made through such sites as mayhem.
But might I suggest that if the organisers are at any stage looking for a different venue, they might look at the Marine Hall at Fleetwood.
I organised a large show there in 1986 and it was good.........even a double page spread in Model Boats.
It has a bar, canteens, food of good quality in the café at reasonable prices, ample parking both in the car park adjacent, and on the prom, good access for traders and has a large main hall similar in size to Norbreck with annexes, plus a staged area also.
just a thought, and this comes from one who HAS organised a show at such a venue.
the only problem is that there isn't the capacity in the town (Fleetwood) anymore for cheep B & B like there is in Blackpool.
neil.
-
Yes the hotel is tired I agree, but what you get for the lowly price you pay more than makes up for it.The beds are comfortable, and the room is clean and tidy, and cleaned every day. the bed linen and towels are changed every day,and the beds made.I have a massive whirlpool bath in my room, which is great. The water is piping hot.
Ok the dining room is very busy, but the tables are quickly cleared between courses.Again everything bar the soup is on a self service basis,NO different to queing for a carvery meal. The choice of menu is excellent and there is plenty of everything. You can go to more up market hotels and not get the quality of food that is served here.
The hall does have its faults, but I go to display my model, look and admire other exhibitors models, and get a chance to "see in the flesh" what items are available to the model builder from the many traders who DO attend.I do not go to look at the decor. If it should move to Fleetwood as Neil suggests,I would still come on my 7 hour plus journey, and wouldnt mind in the least commuting from Blackpool to the new venue on a daily basis.
There are a few empty tables which I was surprised about, but there is still plenty to see,and some really superb models.
Its a good job we are all different.
Organisers, you are doing a grand job,and congratulations to you.
Mick F :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
:-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
well said Mick........... I have been there, done that and actually got the T shirt................and certainly wouldn't want another.
the organisers do a truly grand job and are to be commended.......perhaps the knockers would like to bring a pot of paint and some brighter bulbs to the venue next year...........say a week before so there's plenty of time for the paint to dry, lol {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
What a sad bunch, we are allowed free will and I have decided that I am not going to the Blackpool show again.
I am glad that people enjoyed the show I DID NOT last year as a number of show stands had poor lighting.
I am glad that many visitors do not mind the stink in the toilets I DID last year.
I am glad that the food as good enough for some IT WAS NOT FOR ME.
I hope that those who went to the show could enjoy the models on the day and not have to wait until they looked at the photos they had taken taking advantage of the flash facility.
-
Mention has been made of the Marine Hall. I remember great shows going on there, it being the August Bank Holiday Show before Ellesmere stepped into the void left when they missed a year, and it was suggested as an alternative a few years ago. As a result I went for a look. Pacing the outside of the building, and having a floor plan of the Norcalympia in my pocket, I concluded that the Marine Hall would fit inside the Norcalympia hall with a little room to spare. So a much smaller venue.
There are very few venues large enough around the country, and all have downsides. Most facilities are designed as sports facilities, and are based on the size of a basketball court. Most that are designed as exhibition halls are converted from another use and have drawbacks involving a lack of parking, inner city regulation or being sited well out of the way.
-
Looking at the Marine hall pictures I could not see them wanting the pond inside.
-
Can I ask a dumb question please? Years ago when I was running large indoor sports events, and before I got back into model boats, there used to be a big model show at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool around this time of year. I remember it well as they were starting to set up in another hall as we were clearing down from our event in the Empress Ballroom. Same model show ?
-
Yes
same show
-
I have just realised why there were so many complaints about the Lighting at Blackpool..... It was purely because our Mayhem Boss Martin, didnt come, and dazzle us all with one of his legendary coloured shirts, although Mark from Marks Model Bits, did his best with his toned down version!
Nuff said.
Mick F
-
But what about the boats lads? Which was your own best in show? Neil has declared for a lifeboat, and I for a Pibber (nee PBR ok2) so ....
Dave

I must have been staying in a different norbreck.... £140 odd for two nights. The bed was disgraceful, I've slept on a more comfy cactus. There was clear signs of damp, the beds and bathroom were dirty aswell as the carpet. The room smelt like a decaying pig. Ended up checking out and staying at the travel lodge, still here as I type this. Needless to say got a full refund.
As for the show, I arrived at 4:15 pm and walked in free. Found the hall to be like walking into a cave although the models and traders are first class so thanks to all who made the effort. Lighting seemed dim although not a huge issue. Nice display of models although I wish there were more. Parking at the hotel is disgraceful although I got parked up quickly and to be fair, it's a one off issue. The place is generally neglected and not worth the money and major investment needed in the place. I certainly will never return.
Few pics to follow when I get home.

Against, toilets, price of food, not the best lighting I have seen. For, very helpful traders, some great models, meeting new folks. Overall, worth the 370 mile round trip, yes :-)) Finally, while there is some area's that could be improved, from my own experience, you could pick up some people by limo, give them waiter service and have everything for free, and they would still find something to complain about. %)

F4TCT,
Dan this argument could go on forever, but tell me this please, where in Whitby or anywhere in North Yorkshire, and yes in my area (Cornwall) could you get such cheap and cheerful accomodation. We aim to stay in your area(again) this year and we have to pay WAY above those rates for a self catering caravan on one of the cheaper sites.? :o :o :o :o :o :o

I am very biased, and would have to go for Neils Lifeboat.Ray Scrivens "Brittania is just superb.
For fun value,it has just got to be the Teddy Bears display, though sadly he was not allowed to use certain items, such as the hovercraft because of the noise.
Its a shame I didnt get to meet you,I would like to have had a chat about Canada and Mick B !

Don't disagree with you, although I am in the process of establishing a holiday let, so if you ever want to stay, drop me a pm. Pitch your caravan on my drive if you want.
There is cheaper accommodation in Blackpool and of a better quality, I know because I've stayed in them. Thought I would try the norbreck for ease - looks posh on the outside, ample parking, nice views of the sea etc....
Few other places I've seen are a disgrace also, just get the feeling that the majority of the landlords and land lady's refuse to re-invest into theirs properties, despite the killing they must make. Ive been at different times of the year and the place is stowed out. Just generally get the impression no one cares.
Certainly for my own property, this is different, I do actually care about the quality and the prices to be charged will reflect this.
And if your driving your caravan, please do it at such a time to not inconvenience the thousands on the roads, nowt worse than being stuck behind one.
Anyway the main issue here is the hotel as a venue and accommodation. Any show could be bigger better, however it is what it is and I'm thankful for those that made the effort to show up.
I personally think the international one in November could be bigger and better.....
Ps. Blackpool needs more trams, I've been thinking I don't know what's worse, the trams or the London tube. The times seem so inconsistent.... That's another story though.

A few pictures that I managed to grab while it was quiet before somebody wanted me to stop enjoying myself and start working again.

I was going to go this year, however i had to flit my Mother to her new abode.
I went last year, and to be honest it was my first Blackpool show, the models were excellant and a good range of bits and bobs to get my hands on. THAT IS WHY I WENT !!!! ( not shouting :D ) just using emphasis.
The facilities did leave a lot to be desired, i saw the prices of of the coffee and didnt go near, i smelt the toilet and thought hope i dont need a wee, luckily i didnt.
I understand the negative/constructive comments, i would like to add ( to keep it real ) as an organiser of various community events.
To hire a facility costs money, ours is a hobby to the majority, many have budgets or not a lot of spare cash. You would all moan more next year if the entry was £12 coffee £ 2.50 for a more up to date facility that didnt stink of pee. The increase of fee to traders could possible scare them away, or they would hike up the cost of items to compensate..either way you and i would pay.
I enjoyed last year, and was looking forward to this year. Im young in modelling terms my eyes are good, dont remember any issues last year with lighting.
I would prefer it was kept affordable for all even if it means giving free nose pegs and hat with a light on
:-))
-
The lighting looks reasonable on your photos Malcolm.
Better than I remember from last year.

The discussion on the HOTEL has closed...all further reference to buildings and facilities will be removed.
Can we continue with the actual showing of BOATS and associated pictures please.
-
Yes, I think it was. There was a lot of nice new LED arrays up in the Gods. Since the camera was on "Auto" and I don't think the flash went off, they were all taken under ambient light. Note the shadows. Perhaps the one at the pool would have been a better shot of Ray's Bluebell if I had either set it for flash or had the presence of mind to pan after it. Hopefully somebody else had a camera there.
-
I have a FUJI finepix cam & you get a better pix WITHOUT the flash on the N setting (for natural light) I'd bought some MACS MOULDINGS fittings & wanted the colour scheme so I snapped their display in auto mode & N mode
The flash one is useless too harsh ,this ones in the N setting . . .

Just a line to say, well done Tug-Kenny on the badge idea, I can now put faces to a few mayhemmers also a thank you to the people who put in the hard work to stage the show well done.....Rod :-)) :-))

Do we know who won the model boats in the raffle?

I got loads of items I required, had a good chat ,saw some beautiful boats
came back with lots of ideas for future projects.
Where else could you do that other than these shows.
Many thanks for all that took part in putting the show together
and took the time to trade their wares.
Also thanks to the clubs members that displayed & sailed their boats.

The visitors from down south (Jersey} once again enjoyed the show, overspent as usual stocking up with bits and pieces, 3 new model kits are on the way as well. It was a bit disappointing to see the empty tables, not just for visitors but for the organisers of the show also. A great show but maybe should be better supported by the clubs. If it were possible and affordable I am sure our club would be there. :-))

Hi Mick
Well I will introduce myself next show we attend. Speaking of Irishcarguy in Canada raises another point re the show. Lots of guys never get the chance to enjoy all that our shows have to offer. I don't think Mick would care a fig that the lighting was poor; if only he could just get to a show and meet all you Mayhemmers ..... and buy those bits we all do,whether we really need them or not. %)
I have been unwell lately and mostly off Mayhem, but meeting up with people and chatting about boats again has perked me up a lot and buying a propshaft has got my Girl class tug on the table again. Though just at the moment I am waiting for a job to start .... bah humbug.
-
I can also say that the lads from Fraserbugh, Peterhead, Wick and The Orkney Island also enjoyed the show and are looking forward to next year
-
here have all the photo's gone guys......c'mon get some posted.
cheers,
neil

Was the Canal Diorama a working model? Just curious as to what the tub of water was for if not?
Cheers,
Steven

Yes it was a working model as such,in that the locks did fill up and empty of water. The dear old chap who made it opened and shut the gates by hand, and when the lock equalised, again opened them by hand (using a long stick) and manually pushed the boat through to the next section. He then turned the boat around by picking it out of the water, turning it and putting it back in facing the right way for the next operation.
A lovely little detailed model, but a great shame it was not done electronically.

It was a very interesting model and it was only on the way home I began to wonder how he got the lock gates water tight enough to empty the lock should have asked when I was there! >>:-(

Are not most lock gates of this type not done Manually ?.. :} Not sure about picking up a boat and turning it however..

NOW!!!....there in lies a tale, lol
On my first Narrow boat holiday across the Worcester ring many years ago, we had sailed from Stratford and had come across some meaty locks, all hand worked.....until we came to the first in a flight at Tewkesbury.......we locked up the first of them, with my great bulk pushing and heaving on one of the gates..........when suddenly a chap came running from n adjacent hut yelling and screaming,
Stop! Stoppp!! Stoppppp!!!!
What's wrong says I looking to see if someone had fallen into the lock pit....................No! you B****** idiot......these gates are all hydraulic..............You've just forced out all the b***** oil.................to which I looked down and finding a pool of oil on the canal side........we hastily took the boat to the nest set, let him lock us up and retired to a local pub called The Tudor House and set about trying to forget my embarrassing escapade in that fair town.
Needless to say, when we got back to the narrow boat, the lock keeper was still working on his gate.............whoooopppppzzzzzz!!!
We left quietly in the morning.
so yes, there are mechanical gates, but I stay clear of those these days, lol
-
Sorry Neil.....I just don't understand how the strength of an individual such as yourself :} could overcome a locked hydraulic valve/cylinder actuator.......like the weight of water in the lock acting on the same gate surface area would for the gates open............ >>:-( .......laws of fluids & pressures leads me to think the hydraulic system was faulty. <*< ..........Derek
-
oh, we'd levelled the water in the lock to the canal, by opening the sluices and paddles..........and the gates had done their initial movement of separation due to levelling......just like on manually operated lock gates.....just my eagerness to get the gates open, and was forcing against the mechanism of the hydraulics {:-{ {:-{
-
So once clear of the lock and after you've re shut the sluices and paddles, how are the lock gates closed?
Regards Ian
-

Probably shut the gates first then close sluices and paddles. Unless there's somebody waiting to go the other way.
The "great hand from the sky" is a long standing convention with model railways in hidden sidings that represent the rest of the world, no problem there. Quite likely a lot of boats get pulled manually as well. Or is there an equivalent word for having a horse do the work? Lovely guy, really likes his real water displays. Anybody remember the tidal harbour from last year? Mayhem prize winner.
-
Is there any link to a pic of tidal harbour
-
No Malcolm. When you've exited the lock, you always drop the paddles and close the sluices first and then close the gates behind you. You don't have to refill but it does ensure that if someone behind has to refill an empty lock, there's no dashing about cos some prune has forgotten. Same t'other way round, open paddle and sluices to fill lock and then lower paddles and sluices on top side before opening lower ones.
Regards Ian.
-
Don't forget to open top gates and put boat in and close top gates
before opening lower sluices and paddles {-)
Ned

The Norfolk Broads has no such problems to overcome ...oops I forgot about tieing up at Great Yarmouth and getting through the bridge at Potter Heigham (spelling ?)
