Title: staining/ net bags to reresent fishing nets on a trawler

Hello folks
Can any fellow member give me some advice on how to colour/dye ie, net bags that oranges etc are held in that you can buy in any shop so that I can use them to represent fishing nets on a a model trawler to represent fishing nets, I have tried leaving them in cold tea water for a day or two result, NOTHING NO CHANGE IN COLOUR!! I had read somewhere that this method would stain the nets to a dirty brown colour,despite using three unused valuable tea bags the nets stubbornly refused pint blank to change colour!!!, and I didnt even get a cup of tea out of the teabags!!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i would guess you will struggle staining them. i think most of the modern nets are now a synthetic plastic mesh. so i would think this is why you are struggling to get them to stain. No other help i am afriad

Fishing nets on the trawlers at present are the same colour as bags after oranges or try the geen bags after crougettes

and if you are wanting to simulate the older braided natural hemp nets of the pre synthetic type.......a good substitute to use is the old lady's hair nets that you can still buy and in varying colours

 HI ,
        Cut and pin out net , lite spray with matt black, or coulor of choice   or use a suitable dish wipes , shower scrunges .

As has been said, best to use some paint and sponge the effects on, you could use spray car paint or model paints, even the test pots from D.I.Y stores. As 90% of the hair nets, orange bags etc are plastic soaking will have no effect on them. I have used bright green on my trawler to simulate a modern day-glo net that is used now.

Thanks for the very hepful answers to my question, I like the idea of old ladies hair nets as I am looking for the older braided type of net, the sponge/paint idea seems ideal for more modern boats or indeed older types if I cannot find hair nets. Any more ideas are most welcome.
