Title: Recommend a kit
Post by: essex2visuvesi on June 14, 2013, 09:26:29 pm
My stepson wants to buy an RC boat kit that he can build the majority of himself
He's a pretty competent plastic kit builder so he wants to have a go at a boat with me in a supervisory role.  He knows roughly what sort of thing he wants.  A fast boat with guns
Having a nose online with him we have found a couple he likes but I really want one that is quite a straightforward and reasonably quick to build so he doesn't get frustrated

A couple we looked at tonight that he likes
Graupner weisel
Dumas PT-109
and the precident perkassa 37"

I'm a little dubious of the Perkassa as I'm building the Huntsman and I'm finding the fit and finish somewhat lacking, needing quite a bit of fettling and I think he would quickly loose interest)
The other 2 I know little about

So any ideas chaps?

Add to that Deans Marine- tobruk
He likes it a lot, seems good value and I've heard good things about Deans models.

I know just the kit - HFM Marine Pilot Boat.
I built one myself when I was a young lad, just starting out, moving from Airfix models to RC boats.
Of course, HFM Marine went out of business years ago, but Speedline Models have started to resurrect the old kits - follow the link!

There has also been a recent review in of the new kit in Model Boats Magazine.
In general, I would recommend a plastic boat to start, as the techniques are closer to Airfix style modeling.
If he's still hooked after that, then move on to something with some wood!

Hope that helps. :-))

Neil.

I wouldn't recommend the Dumas PT109 - it's quite a bit of work and heavy with it too. Definitely not a quick build and not for a beginner - even one who's good with plastic kits.

What about RC'ing one of the Italeri PT's or MTB's?

You could try the Deans PBR.  Not a huge outlay for a first kit, aggressive looking, fairly straightforward although the instructions originally weren't first class but they may have been updated.  It should fit with his plastic skills and its a handy size and a decent performer at speed and fun too.

Thanks for the link, a nice boat but has no guns (A must have requirement)

After a little further research we took the Dumas kit off the list, reviews of the kit (even the updated version) were not great.... While it does make for a good kit.  It needs a lot of work.

As for the Italeri kits someone else PM'd the same suggestion, this was an option I had not considered.  But they are now high on the list.  Being plastic kits they should be pretty straightforward and not too much of a problem for him..... It will be the biggest kit he has built to date so still a challenge.  Plus there are the detailing packs and figures available so he can "pimp" it to his liking.

When we looked at deans site there was many he liked, this was one of them but he preferred the tobruk

We found several references to this kit but couldn't find one for sale , so I'm guessing its been discontinued :(

At The moment he is taken with the Italeri schnellboot idea.  But this got me thinking that I could do a parallel build of the Italeri PT-109 with him

Further research came up with the Italeri MAS.... somewhat cheaper the the S100 but still has a crew set available and has the added bonus of an RC conversion write up in the December 2012 model boats magazine.

I'm thinking this may be the way forward as it's not too far out of his comfort zone
