Could someone please tell me anything about these 3 ships? All photographed during WW2, but I thought this sort of thing was censored. I have been told "by one who knows" that the cruiser has American guns fitted. If so, why? Any info gratefully received.

Hi Bryan,
Looking at the pictures
top : bellona class cruiser
middle: Battle class destroyer (HMS Armada)
bottom: W Class destroyer (HMS Whirlwind)

Hi Bryan, top one is a DIDO class, middle is a BATTLE, not sure about the bottom one for certain. Think its a C class

Hi there
I have double checked the pennant numbers to a book I have the
middle is a battle class and the bottom is a W class ( Late WW2 W class)
The top is a dido as Paul said but a batch 2. these had the 'C' turret removed to give them better
radar coverage for the fire control system.

Hi Gingyer, penant numbers changed more and were on and off, more times than a whore's draws back then and changed from one class to another whillie nilly, there must have been some logic to it, but as you say, the bottom one must have been the new W class and not the V and W class from the first world war that were converted and modified for service through the second world war! Still looks like a C to me.

Hi Paul
It is the late war W class and not the V & W class that i mean.
I think all the late war destroyers look the same.
I agree with you about the pennant numbers changing with you all the time
i have added a link to a page that shows a picture of HMS Whirlwind , The
ship I think it is

That the thing with some of these sites, they don't have
good clear pictures. According to ' The book' they had 2 sets of
quad torpedo tubes can only think the look similar to the J,K & L
class

I used to be able to them by ship when I was interested in them years back, I still have interest in old stuff, but, for years I have been mainly building and researching modern stuff, so ya tend to lose track a bit.

Going by the camouflage pattern, the cruiser is HMS Diadem as completed.
Your chum has misinformed you about the guns. They aren't American, they're the same (5.25"???), turrets and all, as used on the KGV class.
Just guessing, but I think the only British built RN ship with American guns was one of the D class AA cruisers with standard US Navy 5" destroyer turrets.
-
The D class was Delhi, she was converted to a AA cruiser in 1941 State side, her 6 inch exchanged for standard Amaerican 5 inch guns.

From top to bottom.
HMS Diadem Bellona Class cruiser
HMS Armada Battle Class destroyer
HMS Whirlwind W Class destroyer

Yes, and when they run out of 5.25" mountings {Dido & KGV class] for these Dido cruisers they replaced them with 4.5" twin mounts?
Jeez.. you read one book and next thing your like Nelson. O0
