Title: Old blade disposal
Post by: mrlownotes on August 17, 2013, 12:17:23 pm
What do you  all do with your old blades ?
I have loads of old blunted blades from scalpel and craft knives. I've never thrown them out just stored them safely as sometimes the 'Stanley' type come in useful as mini scrapers/trimmers or even mini straight edges or thin spacers. However, now, I have to dispose of at least some of them.
I have always feared disposing of them in my domestic bins so I had a word with my local recycling centre. They were very helpful and asked that the blades did not go into any of my bins.
The very safest way to dispose is for them to be taken to the recycling centre and attention brought to them. This way they can be handled safely without fear of nasty sharp surprises or debilitating injuries.
I wonder just how many people in general, never mind modellers, simply dispose of craft blades in their domestic bins without a second thought ?

I put mine in a tin can (baked bean tin etc), when there is a few blades in there I fold over the top & crimp it closed with pliers & put into the normal recycling. Makes a nice rattle but at least it is safe..

Use a diamond hone (Machine Mart) to extend their life.

I have a plastic tub of them. When filled I plan to take it to the recycling centre. Sealing them into a tin can first is good idea.

Thanks for the suggestion :-)) :-))

I have a sharps box from the hospital that was for needles for my wife's diabetes injections - Will be ages before I fill it, then it can go to the local chemist

I always buy these packs -  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-QUALITY-UTILITY-KNIFE-STANLEY-KNIFE-BLADES-NEW-/150776472404?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item231afa6354

Old blade goes into the top of the container above the yellow slider and new blades are dispensed from the bottom. It works perfectly and both old and new blades are safe from children and visitors.

The point being??? {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

In Oz bottles and glass must go into the recycling bin and are invariably smashed when dumped into the truck. O0 O0 O0

So the truck then contains numerous sharps, AKA broken glass, a few hobby blades are not a problem, and will be blunted etc by each compaction until dispensed at the dump/transfer site. %% %% %% %%

And your point being??? {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

Here we have kerbside recycling there everything is sorted into different compartments on the recycling truck by hand before it arrives at the recycling depot... So sharps are a possible hazard...

As the original poster is in the UK, what happens in Oz is not really relevant is it??

chillax hellboypaul..............don't think the world is going to implode just because a few of us don't put our spent blunt blades in an old bean can............... %% %% %% %% %% %%

and just for your info.........once that hopper on the side of your refuse cart goes "up an over" (as ol' eddie waring used to say.........or was it an Up and Under............can't remember in my senior years).......the whole lot, whether plastic, glass or metal.............all gets mixed into one pile anyway..............so technically...........kind of defeats the object of being "green" in my mind............

and besides............makes it a bit messy for the chap at the other end to sort yer blades out from a messy bean can especially if ya haven't washed the can out and they all covered in sticky bean juice {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

as for it not being relevant in Oz.....why not..........poor ol' Raaarty was lookin fer some tips on how to dispose of his blades........weren't ya mate............I'd hate for ya to feel left out Raaarty...........c'mon mate...............don't feel despondent <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( <:( ........he didn't mean it.........(well I don't think so. %) %) %) %) ).

Ah yes it does, or don't we build model boats like you do with materials produced by UK.
Back on topic it is because of UK/EU we now have these recycling/garbage collections etc.
The company that does that work is from your neck of the woods, so yes very relevant.
I could say don't dump idiotic principles, etc, on us Australians, but that would be getting personal.
What I am saying and said, is, there is no issue for modellers to be concerned with.
As has be pointed out by others, all your efforts come to naught, as it is all dumped together even by the so called, dedicated recycling centres.
There is no benefit to the environment, nor is there a safety risk unless you are a garbage scrounger. You are more at risk from disease than sharps.
To reiterate my point what about the broken glass??????????????
If I didn't know better I would think this is PC discussion trying to rear its ugly head.
Simply put, put them in the bin anyway you choose. %% %% {-) {-)

PS, like others, I resharpen old blades, use them as scrapers, etc, so at the end of the day they are Blunts not sharps O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0

Well.. after 50 years of facial shaving.....[no I don't shave my legs or anywhere else thank you  ] ....I think I have probably used 2,640 razor blades of all type & description's
Thinking more about this for the past say 30 years most disposable razors have been multi bladed.......so let do a recalculation  :o
20  years @ 1 razor blade per week = [20x52] = 1,040 blades followed by 30 years @ 1 twin blade razor per week = [30x52x2] = 3,120
So simply   %)   1,040 + 3,120 = 4,160 blades that I have disposed of
Even if I based the average OZ male population over those same 50 years as 8,000,000....
That would be [4,160 x 8,000,000] = 3.328 to the 10th power which is a lot of blades [33,280,000]
RAAArtyGunner....have you read a news media release of anyone being cut of maimed by a used razor blade?......................................
Oh ....BTW...we don't have electric razors in OZ yet...........Derek {-)

wayne theres been a change in the collecting of sharpes in the last couple of months , the chemists no longer take them , its now carried out by local councils instead .  my own scalpel blades get wrapped in masking tape before being thrown in the large metal dustbins at our block of flats

Where I live in London all our recycling goes in one bin and is sorted by machines at a dedicated company, so I put mine in the recycling bin where all the old cans etc go.
I am pretty sure there is not much manual handling of recycled material, so danger of cuts to the operative I would think is minimal.

Having visited several recycling plants in the UK, they are not all the same - unfortuantley, as they employ different machinery etc, in any case some lower tech types end up with a manual sort of some type, as for sharps, if it is metal then it should go with the metal mix though some cans are more leathal than the blades they contain or are mixed with - anyone got a magican tin opener where the whole top is removed and leaves a lovely wrist cutter  :} , so would love to use a sharpner to re-energise my old blades (may explain why the finish on my boats is so bad  {-) )
