As new user of this forum i would like to thank all for the replies posted on the various subjects. I found a lot off info and pictures to help me on my build of the Boston Typhoon. Lots of tips can be found in the various builds than can be used in regardless of what is on the bench. This is my first posting and hopefully i can somehow on a later stage contribute to someone else's build.

Hi Arthur I hope you will post some pictures of your trawler either during the build or after she is finished.
 
being a born and bred Fleetwood lad, from where the Boston Typhoon originally sailed, and remember seeing her in all her glory sailing up and down the channel into Fleetwood fish docks on numerous occasions, she always has a place in my memory.
 
However, you guys used to have another of our Fleetwood ships based in Capetown and I wonder if you ever came across her.
She was another Boston owned Trawler, called Boston Phantom, and was the first trawler in the British fleet to be fitted with PTFE expanding bags around bridge, masts and other areas of iceing where a vessel could be overcome in Icelandic winter conditions.
 
A friend and I built a large model of her during our woodwork lessons at high school so that the company could tank test the apparatus to shed ice build up in order to elliviate the chances of such trawlers capsizing in harsh winter conditions through "icing up".
 
The tank tests worked and de icing materials were fitted to the trawler.
However in real arctic conditions it didn't work as well on the full size ship as it did on the model.
 
One of the photos shows her in her natural environment off the North West coast of Iceland. You can see the black PTFE bags, which were electrically charged, fitted to the front of the bridge wheelhouse and other areas coloured black.
 
The Boston Phantom was sold  out of fishing service as a rig stand by vessel, and eventually back into fishing in South Africa.
 
I believe she was scuttled a few years ago to make an artificial reef for divers and fishermen, off Capetown.

Yes any build pics would be great to see on Mayhem.

Neil that Boston Phantom got a new name after being sold, Claridge Trawlers - the Colne Phantom. I wonder if she is still afloat or has she been scrapped?

high, matey........yes, Colne shipping bought her off Boston's and converted her to a rig support vessel and painted her orange.........she was later sold from Colne Shipping to South African owners who put her back into fishing, and converted her to a crude form of stern fishing vessel.
I believe she finally  was scuttled at the end of her fishing life to form an artificial reef for divers and boat line fishermen

are people allowed to just do that or do they need special permission first?

Hi All
Apparently she was scuttled off Robben Island after a fire in the engine room. I am currently finishing off the RHM Malabar. Working lights and Motor controll to be installed. I most surely will post pictures as the build commences. I bought it partially built. I sorted the hundreds of white metal castings as only 2 bags was not opened.

they are usually all well prepared with the foul stuff taken out first, and always well regulated by the governments of the area.

To sink a vessel as an artificial reef is very expensive.
As Neil has said the regulations forbid any harmful
substances. Even an old sidewinder like the Phantom
would have an engine room full of asbestos.
All the fuel oil tanks, lube oil tanks and any foul water
tanks would have to be removed or steam cleaned.
Even the electronics of the day used one or two
radioactive valves. also a no no.
With most of the warships thus used there has had
to be massive fundraising to enable the project to
go ahead.

I tried to find some article or pictures of the 1978 scuttling but I kept coming up on sites saying it was Boston Typhoon. Any thoughts ?

the "new" Boston Typhoon seems to have been mixed up with the Phantom, and I can not see any details of the Phantom, although I know she was also serving out of Capetown and believe she also met the same fate.
like this one......another Boston trawler..........Seafire, which met a similar fate off new Zealand.

mind you.......if these cheering idiots knew what sort of weather and seas, and sacrifice some of these mighty ships and crews had made in order to bring fish to the dinner plate............they might not bee cheering so much................ *&^%*** drongos!!!!

Seems a more fitting end than a scrapping beach in India.
