-
I will do what I can to keep mayhem going for another year.
-
once Phil gets on here and writes the notes up we can start
-
He could still be in shock it sounds like he spent some money {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
Last time I saw Phil he was loading up his big tug saying that I had turned up too late to carry it for him!!! {-)
Hope he enjoys his new toy donated to him by Wickies, I hear that Steph heard about it before she saw it, think Phil wanted to keep it secret for his new straight running machine next year! :-))
Looking forward to working with you all- should be fun.
Just a quick one, since I wasn't available on the Friday at Warwick (too busy talking or sailing I think!) at the new committee meeting, was Paul Millers (Chuffy) helping with the running of Mayhem next year? I know he was talking to you all during the meeting but I don't know if he is involved with the actual running of the Mayhem side of the show.
-
Hi Nick
Welcome aboard,
When Paul spoke to us in our huddle he said let him know what we want him to do and he would do it, he had said to me earlier that he was looking forward to next year.
Sorry you could not make the huddle, I think your job was to get a Tornado to tow you down the lake on a surf board, though I can not be sure %% %% %% %% %% %% %% %% %% %% %% %%
Brian
-
Thanks Brian for clearing that up for me. :-))
The funny thing is that I've been temporarily attached to 9 Squadron to help out with preparations for the North American exercise where they will be based next to a very nice beach, but I'm not going, I'm staying at home whilst they enjoy themselves. <:( So no tornado surfing towing I'm afraid! %%
Obviously I'll keep you all up-to date with the new park regeneration scheme that Wickies is undergoing at the moment. It should look very impressive when they have finished.
-
Nick
When the regeneration around the lake is complete, any chance of a couple of photos to give us an idea what the new layout around the lake is like. It will give us a heads up as to where the traders can go
Cheers Mate

I was looking around at the old Mayhem weekends posts, this event started in 2007, if it was a marriage it would be our Woollen Anniversary next year :o :o :o :o
I can only think of two years when it has not rained, BUT we still want to come back the next year, this just goes to show how good this event has become. It started out as will anyone come, now people are annoyed if they can not make it.
This is not a pep talk, I was just finishing some excel sheets for work when it came to me how long ago Wicksteed started
-
Years gone by we used to have a theme for the Saturday night entertainment, how about wool next year. Like hats, scarves, no dad jumpers etc
-
Hi Brian
I'm going down to the lake this weekend with Paul and Steve to remove our barley straw bales in preparation for next years lake maintenance, I'll take some pictures of the lake and annotate what is supposed to be removed and what is staying so you have some idea of the new changes.
Judging by how many positive responses on the latest thread set up by Pete I think we're on to a good thing for next year and I think the theme is a good idea, might need them depending on the weather if it turns wet! :D Hopefully not. :-))
-
Have been talking to the association of model submariners and they have a half dozen members keen to come along some even camping.
-
Also why not do an open competition to design a flyer that csn be downloaded off the site to promote at club level!
-
It is a good idea Klunk but I am not sure about an open competition, that might turn into a bun fight. Why not this group design one?
-
Phil still has the notes from Warwick doesn't he?
-
think he has gummed them to death
-
Right then, I took some pictures of the lake yesterday and found out some information about the known changes to the lake area.
Looking towards the flag pole or entrance end of the lake, the path leading from the grass car park along side the railway track is staying. The hedge row either side of the current wooden gate is being removed. In the background where the digger is sitting is becoming an amphitheatre with a hard standing area around it, which we have been told we can use in the possible future for model boat needs. (not the amphitheatre, the hard standing area!).
We at WPMBC have been informed not to rebuild or replace our shelter for the moment, or until the finish of the work around the lake, we are not sure what they mean by this, whether the park intend to replace it for us or to ensure that nobody builds anything too close to us?!!
The concrete edging lining the model boat lake is also going to be repaired where needed.
The metal fence separating the railway track from the lake is staying, and assumedly the little hedge that it goes into will remain too, however, the hedge next to the campsite end of the lake is being removed from what we have been informed.
In the picture below is the other end of the lake closest to the campsite. We have been told two different things regarding the willow trees which separate the two lakes.
The first being that they are all going to get cut down (not very likely since they seem to have removed all the trees that have been marked for the moment), the second being that they are going to be pruned back extensively to prevent the tendrils touching the roofs of any tents or gazebos placed there (more likely!).
From the concept drawings for the park regeneration a second path is being considered which will extend into the big lake on wooden walkways leading out to one of the islands. At the moment there isn't any signs of them starting to build this new path.
The only willow tree that has been removed from the boating lake edge has been the one behind WPMBC's shelter because the branch was over hanging it rather dangerously!
To the right of the picture is the big lake edge, the concrete edge is staying and from there extending out into the big lake to about 5-6ft will be a reed bed to prevent any geese walking out of the big lake into our lake.
And finally the view across the big lake, the lake is being dug out, removing something like 55,000 tons of silt from the lake bed and moving some of it to form new reed beds, the rest being used to spray farmer's fields for fertiliser!
Instead of being only 18 inches to 2ft deep it will be closer to 4-5ft deep in the centre of the lake, they have a Mississippi style paddle steamer which has been in storage for years that they are planning to use on the lake once again.
Any questions? :-)) If I find anything else out I'll inform you.
-
no mention of bacon butties!!!
-
Thanks for that Nick, pity about the willow tree I would have thought that they could prune it, if the hardstand is finished by the time of Mayhem we could put traders there
-
Great report Nick, thanks for your time and effort. :-))
1. The far field ( opposite end to the gate ) is that ever used for anything?
I ask as they are taking out the hedge, I wonder if they have anything in mind?
2. Do you think they are planning to have the amphitheater in place by May 2014?
3. Do we have May 24, 25 penciled in with Wicksteed Park yet?
-
Phil, do we have your notes from Warwick yet?
( BTW: How's the new teeth? )
I can remembered some points, perhaps you can fill in the missing bits:
1. Mayhem at Wicksteed Chairman Brian ( HTML / Chingdevil )
2. Set up this board - Done.
3. Confirm date with Wicksteed Park & MBC - May 24, 25
4. Entrance discount?
5. Camping discount?
6. Publicity. TV, newspapers, Model boat mags, Youtube!
7. Video of event.
8. Advertising banner on outer park railings?
9. Promote “it’s a 2 day event but we actually start on Friday!”
10. Martin's Marquee damaged - Phil said he can provide a replacement.
11. Martin Happy to do Bacon Rolls again for the Sunday early risers.
12. Martin and family happy to provide Coffee, Tea, cups, etc. and serve both days as before.
13. Single Donation to Mayhem in tent ( as three last year ).
14. Set up an additional donations on other stalls eg, RNLI, Help for Heroes.
15. Have a go boats. ( eg. 50p a go.)
16. Segregated area top end of lake for small boats?
17. Steering course 'event', £1 a go?
18. Ask Denise if he will set up Steering course?
19. Straight runner 'single class' - eg. 36 x 12 x 12" ( must have external engine cut-off ).
20. Invite the traders. – organiser?
21. Invite the clubs. – organiser?
22. RC Tank group and area?
23. RC Truckers?
24. Hovercraft clubs?
25. Trade stand layout.
..... what have I missed?
-
You missed arranging the good weather again {-) {-) {-) {-)
-
Hi Martin and all,
Regarding the dates, that is all confirmed for the 24/25 May 2014 and the park has been informed by Nigel Marriott (Wickies Lake Manager and retired WP employee). The dates have been placed on WPMBC's website and we will ask the park to put it on their events website. They seem very happy, a member of the Wicksteed Park board of trustees has made the parks intention of supporting WPMBC and anything hosted at the boating lake very clear, they think that the Mayhem is very good. :-))
The park management are doing mini projects around the park grounds, the amphitheatre has been started, the foundations have gone in already! So it should be finished sooner than expected.
We are not sure what they have planned for the end field, we've heard rumours that it might become the car park for WPMBC, but there might be a path starting somewhere near that location which extends out into the big lake on wooden walkways like Wicken Fen in the Fens.
My Dad and the WPMBC committee are looking into the event discounts for both entrance and camping, other events such as the Japanese Car a Owners Club have discounts so we are going to push for a proper discount for the Mayhem.
We have last years advertising banner that Martin had made, my Dad mentioned that WPMBC should keep it and stick on the new dates and put it up in the New Year for the Mayhemers.
Finally regarding the steering course set up by Dennis last year, he is not on talking terms with the club anymore after a falling out earlier this year, it was over some personal reasons and I can say no more!
However, if you do want a steering course we do have about 40 buoys available for use on the water, they are the ones you can see in the photos.
-
Was Phil going to get a list of clubs from Warwick along with a list of traders. I was going to send an invite out to the clubs, but I m not sure which ones
-
Found out where the new path near the amphitheatre will go. If the spray paint on the grass is anything to go by it will swing around to the right hand side of the current flagpole, or closest to the big lake side!
The club shelter is not being moved/rebuilt/changed in anyway, the work progress is accelerating because they have just had another 20 workers turn up this week. All the big work will be finished for the end of March 2014, with final details finished for May 1st 2014 when the park officially reopens.
Brian- from what I remember traders wise from Warwick there was:
Deans Marine
Models by design
Speed line models
Mobile marine models
Component shop
Tony Green steam components
SHG
Barry's Lettering
MACs Mouldings
Mount fleet Models
Model Sounds
Metcalf mouldings
There were a lot more but can't remember them at the moment!

Martin has given the invite a bit of a re-write:-
ModelBoatMayhem at Wicksteed, 23rd – 25th May 2014
Hi
I am Brian, this years chairperson of the Model Boat Mayhem Wicksteed Weekend organising committee, ( html on the Forum - http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/).
We would like to formally invite your club to the Mayhem at Wicksteed Weekend 23rd – 25th May 2014 ( Wicksteed Park, Kettering, Northampton, NN15 6NJ. ) – ALL Clubs Welcome!
These are a fun weekend for all model boaters, there is no formality just turn up and sail your models, the fun starts from the Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. You can put up gazebos and tables around the water edge, and car parking is about 50 feet away from the water. The boating lake has a concrete edge, so launching and recovery is easy, we also have some members with waders to assist with this if required. The concrete edge also makes it easy for people with disabilities to get around. There will be themed events such as ‘Warships parade’, ‘Tugs or the world’, Lifeboats, ‘Yachts on sail’, ‘Straight running for RC boats’, etc. There will be a steering course laid out and special prize for anyone that can do it blindfolded with the aid of a ‘pilot’!
We do not charge for entry to the event, however there is a charge for entry and parking in the park, last year this was £6.00 per but for all passengers. If your want to stay for the whole weekend there is camping and caravan facilities in the park, but no electrical hook up for the caravans. Last year the cost for camping or a caravan was £20.00 for the weekend unless the caravan was over 20 foot they then charged £30.00 – this is run by the Wicksteed Park management direct.
There will be an informal BBQ on the Saturday evening (bring your own bangers etc.) and as this is our 7th anniversary, the theme will …..WOOL! So silly hats, crazy scarves or Christmas jumpers all are welcome. Martin ( Mr. ModelBoatMayhem! ) usually makes a few free bacon rolls on Sunday morning for club members and the early risers so I’ll see if we can twist his arm to make one for you!
Please let us know if your club’s marquee size and we’ll reserve a FREE PITCH for you.
So bring it up at your next club meeting, let us know when you’re coming and let have so fun with Model Boats.

Kind regards,
Brian (html)
Edit: does usually makes - Martin
Perhaps we should leave that as it is, so you get up early :-)) :-))
-
I have contacted all the clubs that were at Warwick this year, with the exception of the Lifeboat Enthusiasts their web site has a security problem so it is not working. If anyone has contact details for them, pm me please and I will invite them.
Traders next!
Bri

Top job! :-))
-
Hi everyone
You all might be interested in the following...
On Thursday the club was approached by Wicksteed Park management members (the MD, and a Director) to ask us whether the Mayhem at Wicksteed traders would like to use the amphitheatre when it's completed for next years show! We quite rightly said yes, and now we can use the hard standing and the theatre to host a traders village.
The parks management are very interested in making our event successful and will help out as much as possible, they even sent out their staff to visit Warwick to carry out their own research on the model boat community, we can presume that they liked what they saw. :-))
-
That is very good news Nick, it is good to hear the park are interested in Mayhem being a success (it already is and the park do not realise).
I know they are hopping for more visitors to the park, but if they are happy it makes it easier for us to organise another great weekend
Bri
-
right have a definite contingent coming from west wales model boat club, and a new trader is possibly interested coming along to demonstrate his new submarine being released next year 2014.
-
Pete
What is the traders name, I can then add it to the list of traders/clubs coming when I get replies.
-
Well,
The new paths have been cut and dug out of the grass, essentially making the current path extend around the edge of the big lake. Due to the rain though, the new path which hasn't been tarmaced yet currently resembles little rivers! {-)
We are in progress changing the old banner dates from last year to the new dates for this year. Our friendly club member who deals with the park will ask where the best place to hang the banner to get the best advertising potential. It will probably be near the main gate just behind the point where you pay to get in.
The big lake is coming on nicely, the far point looks like its complete and the sluice gates are functional so fingers crossed the model boat and big lake shouldn't flood anymore.
When the main changes have been completed I will draw up the layout of the lake area we will be using.
Back to work now... Boo! :}
-
Yep
You need to go and print something for one of your Tornados.
Brian
-
Hi Brian
Just got the response from my contact in the Wicksteed Park management. We can put the mayhem banner on the railings just inside the main gate (next to the ticket boxes). We are in the process of changing the date on the old banner to make it look professional instead of tacked on. The banner will be put up in the next couple of weeks to get as much publicity as possible. Everyone driving into the park has to pass the banner.
The management has also offered to assist with the set up of the show, they ask that once you know approximately how many clubs/traders are coming they can get the tables, barriers, etc to the lake side on the Friday/Saturday to cater for everyone. They really are wanting to help in every way, their new MD is really pushing for mayhem support and as much assistance as possible! That's the best news I've heard this year :-))
If nobody else wants to, I'm more than willing to contact the magazines and local newspapers, etc on behalf of the mayhem committee. Just let me know...
If anyone wants to draw up a steering course I'll get the number of buoys, and the colours, we have in the lake at the moment so we can incorporate those into the course too.
I'll keep everyone up to date with the parks refurb as and when it happens, but they are planning to reopen the whole park to the public for April 1st 2014.
-
Hi Nick
If you pick up the media work that would be great.
Do we need to go and meet the management before the event?
Brian
-
Have sent an email off to tamiya trucks uk and awaiting a reply at present.
-
Tamiya trucks UK have just got back to me. They apologise but cannot make it that weekend due to a prior commitment
-
What about the tank boys?
-
Hi Brian
I'll contact the usual magazines and the local papers, and if can get a good contact for the local BBC or ITV media I try to get them involved too. I believe that the first mayhem was broadcasted on the BBC Look East news. I'll get Wicksteed Park to get it up on all the function lists too.
If you would like to meet the management to discuss anything I'm sure that they would love to meet us, a member of the WPMBC committee (probably Steve Brown or Paul Millers) will go with us to introduce us all.
They have mentioned that if we would like to, to discuss the set up of the show once we know the number of clubs and traders intending to go. They keep offering us assistance so if anyone comes up with any requests I'm sure that they will try their best to get it for us (except the weather! {-) ).
-
Nick
Thanks for that
I think, as they say nearer the time we should go an meet them. We can work out who when the time arrives.
Brian
-
Hi everyone
I've contacted Model Boats and Marine Modelling International magazines and they are going to put our event in their diaries and events pages, both should be in print in their next editions.
I have been offered a half page or a whole page advert in Model Boats magazine, I've asked how much this will be, and what is required. The advertising team will be getting back to me on this ASAP.
I'll keep you all update with my progress.
I am contacting the local papers and Wicksteed Park web team for our advert to placed in their pages.
So far a good response!

As you can see its quite expensive for just one small advert
Plus we don't have an advert to use yet, personally I think just the mention in the diary and events pages is enough for the model boat world! But its not my decision what does everyone else think?
-
Eeeek!
-
I think like Nick a mention in the diary and events pages is sufficient, it is not as if the weekend is a brand new event it is well known in model boating circles. The diary & event entries would be just a reminder
-
Get it in quick!
-
Had a request from west Wales model boats. They were wondering if they could attend and one of their members would like to out in a small pyrotechnics display. A few depth charges and explosions on a couple of model boats. He is a qualified fireworks person.
-
Sounds great!
We made need some sort of certificates or something for a public display I guess.
-
Hi everyone
Good news!
I'm not on Op Sandbag! Actually the operation is called Operation Pitch Pole! %% Apparently I'm too important to send as I'm setting up a Primary Star maint team next week ( my boss's words not mine!).
Anyway, the banner is going up next weekend the new vinyl numbers are being professionally attached to it so it doesn't look like an idiot put them on (I'm on about me!).
I've contacted Model Boats and politely declined their offer regarding the advertising space, I thought it was going to be about £30-50 per advert per month, but my God, £175 for the small one truly shocked me, and my Dad! :o
I'm in contact with the WP website management team to place our event directly on to their events page and scrolling news. I will contacting the Evening Telegraph newspaper closer to the time to advertise Mayhem at Wicksteed. Does anyone else know any other media I should contact?
Due to the bad weather the work at the park is now 2 weeks behind schedule but the big lake is getting on very quickly, currently it looks like a scene from WW1 but the islands are double the size and a deep channel is being cut into the clay. All the new paths are being finalised too and the amphitheatre site is being progressed too. They are confident that it will be completed for Easter.
Hi Martin and Klunk
Had a request from west Wales model boats. They were wondering if they could attend and one of their members would like to out in a small pyrotechnics display. A few depth charges and explosions on a couple of model boats. He is a qualified fireworks person
Sounds great!
We made need some sort of certificates or something for a public display I guess.
I think we just need to add it to the current Risk Assessment to cover it, just write that the person is a certified pyrotechnics engineer.
Nick
-
I will look at the risk assessment again, I hope the park will be ok with the pyrotechnics, could you ask them Nick do not want any issues on the day.
I have had only one club say they are going to come, Wicksteed Park Model Boat Club and one trader Ron Dean. I have sent out an invite to West Wales, but as yet no reply.
Brian
-
Hi Brian
No problem, I'm going up to the park this weekend to hang the banner up, I'll ask the management about pyrotechnics. Hopefully we get some more response soon after the magazines show our event is on.
-
Right spoken to ian at west Wales mbc. He said to get the parks permission and inform the local police. He is going to let off a few depth charge snd simulated cannons. Nothing major.
-
He is going to let off a few depth charge snd simulated cannons. Nothing major.
Hope it is!!!! O0
-
Luton MBC will be attending, IE me and whoever I can talk into attending
West wales MBC 2 members are going!
-
Going up to the park this weekend to meet our contact Nigel to find out about the Pyrotechnics request, since they have a big fireworks display I can't imagine them saying no but I definitely confirm this weekend.
The events free advert has appeared in model boats magazine and MMI April and May editions will show us in the events diary. All going well so far! :-))
-
Doing a great job chaps!
Have we announced events or anything yet?
eg. Straight running class?
-
One of our wickie members has sent out a request for Victorian era and early 20th century warships to come to the mayhem weekend to create a turn of the century Spithead naval review parade, he has about six vessels of his own, I have one, there are another three members of Wickies who have two or more, and I was approached at Warwick by at least three more Mayhemers who are going to bring their Victorian warships too. And I'm sure BobK is trying to get his Polyphemus torpedo boat to the weekend this year too.
I've found a suitable CD if we have a PA system to play whilst they are sailing around-
The planets- Mars the bringer of war! :embarrassed:
-
I've been talking with the park management with Nigel today and they are very happy for the west Wales lads to use their pyrotechnical equipment for their display, they are interested seeing the actual display in action.
The banner is up and can be seen from the road, it is in the centre most prominent location on the advertising area.
I'm going to talk to them about putting out a tannoy message over the weekend to bring people down to the lake to see the boat displays pointing out the pyrotechnical display and any other event we decide upon.
-
I like the idea of a Victorian era review, yep that is an interesting event.
I notice with your pictures Nick that they have opened up the other end of the lake now, would we still be able to get Martins marquee down there, or will it have to stay at its usual end? We said at Warwick it would get more people walking around the lake rather than bunching up at the beginning.
With all the trees and bushes removed around both lakes, " we are going to need a bigger rope for the gazebos " To miss quote a film :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Any word from Phil regarding a straight runner class, or do we want to make up our own rules quickly. Length width, propulsion, safety so we get a competition over the weekend
If we are letting the little darlings have a go, anyone know how to slow down a club 500?
-
As far as I know we have free reign around the lake so we can put the gazebos or tents where ever we can get them, the only restriction I would guess is not to put them up over the paths, other then that we are fine.
I presume that you can turn the wick down on the speed controller if its a standard ESC by resetting it to your desired setting on your tx and pressing the button on the ESC, if you've still got your instructions or the ESC it should say how o set it up but to restrict it I think you only move the stick forward a little bit to set your max speed. I presume... :D
I think we should contact Stavros to see what Phil is upto, I haven't heard from him since Christmas, I'll be seeing Stavros at coalville on April 4 or 5 at their show if Phil doesn't appear soon.
-
Thanks Nick
I forgot you can set the forward and reverse on a Mtronics esc, doh!
-
You can also make a disk template (with a limiting slot in it) and fit it over the throttle stick.

Risk Assessment
I have added a couple of bits to last years assessment, highlighted in blue. I have left the insurance part blank for the moment, please take a look and let me know if it is ok, I have not removed any of the risks highlighted last year just added the pyrotechnics and tweaked some others.

Model boats are normally about one metre long but can vary in length to approx 14ft long. Scale boats are predominately electric powered, but some are steam. Owners/users of steam are to ensure that the flammable fuels are stored correctly and, in particular, that visitors and children cannot tamper or play with canisters containing fuel or any other equipment. Owners of boats are to ensure that their boats are powered up safely particularly if members of the public are in the vicinity of the boat. Any non-member in the vicinity of the boat should be asked to ‘move back’
Risk level – Low
8. Boats on water.
Care when running boats. Owners to ensure they are running on the correct crystals / frequency and not crossing channels with another user prior to launch. Check channel/frequency board, situated within the organiser’s tent, prior to ’switching on’. This ensures no boat is uncontrolled which could have a ’knock on’ effect for a potential accident with a user reacting without thinking to ensure their boat is not damaged and falling into the pond. Current users of the 2.4GHz FASST r/c equipment should not be affected by other users. All 27-40MHz transmitters with extendable aerials must have a plastic golf ball or similar fitted to prevent injury. Boats must be operated in a safe manor with public safety foremost.
Risk level – Low
9. Steam Power.
All steam powered boats to be checked by a member of the organising committee before being operated. Steam powered boats to be powered up in full accordance with the accepted safety procedures and to have the appropriate certificates where required.
Risk level – Low
10. I/C Power.
All I/C boats are to be checked for safety by a member of the organising committee before they are started. I/C powered boats are to be started up in full accordance with accepted safety procedures and be fitted with the appropriate silencers and anti-pollution devices. When operating on the lake, speed is to be restricted to 15mph and only be operated for 20 minute demonstrations. All other boats are not be used on the water when I/C powered boats are demonstrating to prevent any collision.
Risk level – Low
11. Batteries.
Most members recharge their batteries at home, however, if batteries are being charged ’on site’ this is to be done in remote area well away from the public. Charging process to be monitored at all times by the battery owner. Greater care with Lipo or similar batteries which must only be charged with the proper type of charger.
Risk level – Low
12. Pyrotechnics use
Some models will use pyrotechnics in their display; the person running the display is a qualified pyrotechnic technician. Tannoy announcements will be used to warn people around the lake that this display is going to start. No other boats to be on the water during this display. To avoid distracting the model boat operator, all members of the public and other Mayhem visitors are to keep away from the operator while the display is going on
Risk Level - Low
13. Tents & Gazebos. Etc.
All tents and Gazebo guide ropes to be highlighted to prevent a trip hazard. ALL tables and equipment to be placed far enough back from the lake side to allow enough room to the general public to pass by easily and safely. ALL Models placed on Tables to be placed so they can not fall off and injure. All table to be checked for soundness and suitability. Boats/equipment is not to be left in positions where they could become a trip hazard.
Risk level – Low

html, west wales say they havent received an invite. heres the email address they supplied me

cheers

-
Pete
It would appear that I put .com instead of .co.uk onto the West Wales email address, all sorted now and I have had a reply from Ian saying he is coming
As for traders at the moment it is Deans Marine with a possible Component Shop, Mobile Marine is definitely not coming
Brian
-
Anyone heard from /spoken to SteamboatPhil yet?
-
It would appear Stav has spoken to Phil, but I have not heard from him
-
I've had a few messages from the Victorian warship nutters like me, so far there are ten warships coming with another 5-10 possible from my contacts from the Warwick show.
I'm visiting Coalville I'll see if I can persuade some of the traders there if they want to go.
-
Here's a thought
As running this great forum has a cost attached to it, why not this year have a box for donations to Mayhem, as well as another if you want.
Brian
-
Yes Hosting bill comes round quick enough
.... plus the psychiatric and medication fees! %%
-
I think thats a good idea, like the tescos advert every little helps!
Went up to do some sailing on Sunday and what a change in the park. The pay booths have moved around the corner so the mayhem banner is in prime sight for everyone to see. The big lake is almost full and the reed beds near the boating lake are being planted soon. The campsite looks like it's being done up too can't see much through the construction fences but it looks like they are using all three fields for camping and caravaning. We've been told by one of the directors of the park that the entrance fee to the park might be reduced this year so we will find out at Easter what the new car park tickets are and the costs, but he said that they were not planning to increase the fee.
I'm going up to Coalville this Saturday so hopefully I'll see some of you there, Paul, my Dad, and Nigel Marriott will be driving up there with me.
-
Nick
If you see Phil up there bend his ear about the Mayhem Weekend.
Cheers
-
Will do Brian, I'll speak to Steph she'll sort him out!
-
er... just noticed that Mayhem at Wicksteed.... wasn't in the Mayhem Calendar!
Fixed
After this weekend ( Coalville ), we better start talking it up on the open Forum.
Going back to the original list, what definitely in place?
Martin :-)
-
Hi everyone
Just got back from Coalville speaking with traders and Mayhemers alike.
I spoke to Stavros and he's not heard much from Phil unfortunately. He said that he knows as much as we do to what Phil is doing. Apparently Phil is setting up a show elsewhere as part of his work- still no idea if he's actually coming to Wicksteed or not. :((
Anyway on to some positive news, I spoke to Andy of Models by Design and he was not sure if could make it but seemed to brighten up when we mentioned that the ground near the lake is now solid hardcore beneath the surface, so he might come in his 4x4 truck to display.
The Scale Flag Man says he wants to come to the Mayhem so that's one more trader. :-))
I couldn't get near the component shop stand but hopefully they will come.
I spoke to Bill and he'll help set up on the day.
Stavros seemed a bit peeved (he wasn't his usual happy self) he told me he was coming to sail and have fun at the Mayhem, if Phil doesn't make it he doesn't see much point setting up a straight running course.
Steve Dean was very enthusiastic and was spreading the word that his new creation Afor Alien will be sailing at the Mayhem weekend.
I spread the word about the mayhem weekend to everyone I spoke to and they seemed positive about coming along. :-))
I've got about 15 Victorian/early 20th century vessels attending over the weekend so far but could have up to 20 depending who makes it or not.
Advertising is going well.
We will find out at Easter what the new parking fee will be and what discounts we can get.
I can make a big frequency control board for the show if it's needed?
-
Below is the original list:-
1. Mayhem at Wicksteed Chairman Brian ( HTML/Chingdevil )
2. Set up this board - Done.
3. Confirm date with Wicksteed Park & MBC - May 24, 25 - Done
4. Entrance discount? - To be confirmed in a couple of weeks
5. Camping discount? - To be confirmed in a couple of weeks
6. Publicity. TV, newspapers, Model boat mags, Youtube! – Nick has done this
7. Video of event. - ??????
8. Advertising banner on outer park railings? – done Nick & dad
9. Promote “it’s a 2 day event but we actually start on Friday!” - This was put in the original letter sent out
10. Martin's Marquee damaged - Phil said he can provide a replacement. - Will Phil still supply a marquee?
11. Martin Happy to do Bacon Rolls again for the Sunday early risers. – Martin make a note of this one
12. Martin and family happy to provide Coffee, Tea, cups, etc. and serve both days as before. Phil was going to supply the tea, coffee, urn etc
13. Single Donation to Mayhem in tent ( as three last year ).
14. Set up an additional donations on other stalls eg, RNLI, Help for Heroes.
15. Have a go boats. ( eg. 50p a go.) – not sure how this is going
16. Segregated area top end of lake for small boats? – I will have a talk with Stav
17. Steering course 'event', £1 a go?
18. Ask Denise if he will set up Steering course? – did we get someone else to build the steering course?
19. Straight runner 'single class' - eg. 36 x 12 x 12" ( must have external engine cut-off ). – No plan from Phil and it is a bit late to be building a new boat
20. Invite the traders. – organiser? – Invites sent out, though minimal replies. Nick got a better response
21. Invite the clubs. – organiser? - Invites sent out, though minimal replies. Nick got a better response
22. RC Tank group and area? - Klunk was looking into this
23. RC Truckers? - Klunk was looking into this
24. Hovercraft clubs?
25. Trade stand layout. – Awaiting final layout outside lake
We have a Risk Assessment for the event
Did we resolve insurance for the event, do we need to get it?
With no Phil we will need to make other arrangements for the marquee and refreshments
Do we need a large frequency board, lot of boats on 2.4ghz now, if we do I have access to a plotter at work, email it to me and I will print it
Bill has said he will check over an slow I/C boats that turn up
Phil was going to do any steam powered models as per the risk assessment
That is all for the moment
Bri
-
With the risk assessment complete can you email it to me and I'll hand it to the Wicksteed Park staff for their reference.
We've looked over the insurance and considering the price we think it would be better to have it and it's a good cover, I've spoke to my Dad and we are going to pay for half the insurance to help out the show. You certainly got a good insurance deal Martin. :-))
I'll see what marque tent we have in our lock up at Wicksteed Park, what was actually damaged we might be able to replace or repair the damage with what's left of our old marque- I think the two Marques were identical so there might be a chance.
For frequency control I think it might be better if we had a larger board available because the club one we use is tiny and not very centrally located for the show- I'll ping you an email this Friday with the standard board we use.
I will check out what the final layout will be for weekend so we know what area are accessible so we can plan a rough layout.
Speak to you all layer :-))
-
From Stavros.
Don't PANIC Mr Mainwaring PHIL is COMING to Wickky just spoken to him this mng and he will pm you he has ALREADY booked his Camping ...He is bringing his Gazebo but more IMPORTANTLY the TEA URN
Dave.................Mr FIX IT HA HA
-
Also lets Draft up a few Schedule up a few events / features / slots so we can start publishing it.
-
Nick
I will sort out the insurance and put the name of the broker on the risk assessment and then send it to you. I will use the one you used last year, I used them a couple of years ago no problems with them

I've posted an Update: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,45111.msg476088.html#msg476088 (http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,45111.msg476088.html#msg476088)
Please add as you can think of stuff...
Any error/changes required, let me know and I will edit.
Martin :-)
-
I thought we were going to use the Club 500, for letting the kids have a go, not racing
-
We can do both... :-)
-
The rc truckers cannot make it as they are committed to another show that weekend. The tank boys never came back to me. Will keep on trying. I will setup a new thread when I get home tomorrow to start pinging that mayhem is close to hand, with a few unseen pics. If someone csn fill in the traders etc thst will be great
-
Do you think Ken would bring his trucks instead of his boats?
-
Are we going to have a bring and buy stall this year?
-
Does anyone have any contact details for the Lifeboat Enthusiasts, I want to invite them but their web site was down for along time with a security issue and now it has disappeared. I have looked around but no joy at all
-
Do you think Ken would bring his trucks instead of his boats?
I'll see what I can do. %)
Ken
-
Sorry Ken
I forgot you can see this board, I should have asked you myself!
Brian
-
That's good news about Phil- was getting a bit worried about him :}
I'm going to the park this weekend for a sail so I will ask our 'spy' Nigel to find out what discounts we can get for the weekend- fingers crossed :-)
Will get some photos of the boating area for the layout planning phase.
Wicksteed Park MBC are having a committee meeting over Easter- since I'm treasurer of the club is there anything anyone would like to ask the committee regarding the mayhem show?
I now have a good amount of Victorian warships for the fleet review so hopefully there will be some good pictures taken by our Martin and his camera on a boat. We should have a bout 8 battleships, 7 cruisers and about 3 destroyers, but I keep getting pm's from interested Mayhemers so that number might increase.
The other trader who I spoke to was called 'Scale Flags' not what I called him! He has been before and said that he would try to make it for the weekend- he likes camping so he might be joining in!
-
Hello Brian,
I've done a bit of research and found out that the Trucks will be at lord Montague's Palace that day. (I can't spell Beaulie !)
I won't be bringing any trucks to the Mayhem weekend as I think it best to concentrate on all things nautical for our annual get-together.
Sorry to interrupt you all.
Ken
-
I've spoken to Nigel and he'll approach Wickies management to see what we can get off the entrance and camping fees. I've been informed that the railway will not be in use during the Mayhem weekend due to an unforeseen glitch which means that we don't have to worry about the train crossing and the gazebo locations being too close to the tracks this year.
Our club secretary has been approached by two clubs wanting invites to the Mayhem weekend-
Anglia Marine MBC
Northants Model Makers (they are mainly plastic modellers but would like to display over the weekend)
Tried to get some pictures of the area but it turns out my sister had borrowed my camera and used up all the memory taking pictures of my niece and not told me so I'll go back on Friday to take the pictures :embarrassed:
-
Good work Nick.... sisters! huh!
I think your dad has the hot cups from last year, can you check please.
We're OK to man the tea urn and bacon rolls Sunday morning.
Brian, how much does the 'kitty' owe you for the insurance?
Medals and awards, has this been discussed yet?
-
Nick
I emailed Anglia Marine and did not get a reply, in fact I emailed a quite a few clubs, well all at Warwick and I think I have had two replies.
No Train, it will be a lot quieter this year, I am waiting for the insurance document to turn up, I will then send the information and the risk assessment over to you and Martin
Martin, the kitty does not owe me anything for the insurance, done and dusted.
Not thought of medals, what do you usually get Martin?
Brian
-
Yep we found the cups the other day, had one of those moments trying to work out why we had over 1000 polystyrene cups before it dawned on us %%
No idea why Anglia didn't reply but they are interested now- they've been before and they lent us their marquee tent 2years ago.
Nigel told me on Sunday (before I asked about discounts) that the entrance to the park at the moment is £4 per car due to the ride restrictions because of park renovations. He's not too sure how long that will last but he'll find out for us as part of the discounts negotiations.
On another note we are the only event booked for the Whitsun weekend so we should have full backing from the park for tables and the alike. I was thinking of asking for about 30 tables to back up the ones that the clubs and traders usually bring.
-
Nick
Do you know where would be camping, it would be nice to be in the main field near the showers
-
I'll ask for you to ensure the Mayhem camping area is in the main campsite, they've separated the campsite off with new trees to create smaller areas presumedly for customers like the Mayhemers to use so other campers won't camp in the same area.
-
Trees? well that is lot better than the rope they used to string everywhere so you could trip over it in the dark >>:-( >>:-( >>:-( >>:-(
-
Question for Martin!
Can you put a countdown To mayhem at the top of the forum Page ?
-
Just another thought I'm watching an old film at the moment and wondered if we could do the same with All the boats at wicksteed?
Ps the films Convoy!
-
Question for Martin!
Can you put a countdown To mayhem at the top of the forum Page ?
Hmmm, good challenge.... %%
-
Negotiations are in progress this week with WP management :-))
Nigel is meeting with them on Thursday to discuss and confirm our potential discount for entrance and camping.
He will also be discussing the cordoning off of the campsite for the Mayhemer's and we have requested the lower corner nearest to the lake but in the main campsite with the shower and toilet block- hope this is okay for everyone.
He is also requesting 20-30 tables to be dropped off at the lake side on the Friday morning. Hopefully I'll have a full update from him next Sunday.
I've got a map of the lake area which has been the focus of the recent refurbishment. The pink area with the green squashed circles is the area that was grass land with the metal knight but has now become the amphitheatre. The blue area is our lake and associated grass around it. Because of bad weather and delays the area is currently behind a construction fence but it is very likely that will be removed in the next couple of weeks in preparation for the official park opening. We are not sure whether the area will be grassed or seeded with grass seeds. We hope that they are laying grass. If we say that we have the usual area that we have had over the last 7years for the show then if the area is available to use then it will be a bonus. The park only ask that vehicles do not cross the new paths- on the map its the path from the round house next to the toilets leading to model boat lake. All existing paths are still ok to drive over.
Oh and the railway will be in use over the weekend now, the problem has been sorted- a bridge was sitting on what was thought to be mud but after some serious digging they found the foundations!
And finally…
We handed in the Risk Assessment and a copy of the insurance certificate to the Events management yesterday, they are really happy with the promptness of the RA and insurance being handed in to them- considering that other event organisers haven't sorted out theirs yet for other WP shows in the next few months we have come out smelling of roses :}
-
Martin / who it may concern! Can the Scottish. Contingent book 4-6 tables for the weekend please!!!
-
Nick, Have we approached Wicksteed for table yet?
-
Yep, the park has been approached and we have asked for 25 tables to be dropped off for us Friday afternoon or Saturday Morning. They said no problems. :-))
They will be the usual square/rectangle ones we have used before.
Nigel and Wickies club members are meeting the events manager this Thursday to sort out the parking and camping fee prices for us, and we are booking the campsite area I mentioned before for the use of the Mayhemers.
We are making signs up too to guide Mayhemers to the car park and the campsite as we have in the past.
-
Nick
If you need anything printed, ping it over to me. I need to go into work on Saturday, so it will be nice a quiet to do this, I will do the frequency sheet then also. Do you want an electronic copy for your club, if so I will send it over to you, or I could print a couple more for you and laminate them
-
Hi Brian
Many thanks, I would love to have a electronic version to eventually replace the WPmbc freq board, after the mayhem weekend we are doing some rebuild work of the club shelter.
-
Stavros is creating some static about the possibilities of Fireworks, what;s the story?
Martin
-
Found it! http://www.wicksteedpark.co.uk/downloads/Wicksteed-Park-Camping-and-Lodges-Terms14.pdf
6. Fireworks / Firearms - No person shall fire or discharge any firearm or missile or let off any firework in the Park.
-
My understanding is that Ian was going to set of some pyrotechnics from his boat(s), I am not sure where fireworks came form other than the image Ian put up.
Nick are we still ok to set off pyrotechnics?
-
Yes we can still use pyrotechnics as long it's part of the boat display and they're not used for any other purpose. The park would have said something by now if they didn't want it.
Not sure myself about the firework reference came from, hopefully they are joking but it must be impressed onto Ian that he cannot set any form of pyrotechnic off after his display, unfortunately if he does he could be asked to leave by the security staff at Wicksteed Park. Fingers crossed they are just messing around.
Haven't heard anything from Nigel yet but I'll speak to him no later than Sunday morning.
-
Nick
Thanks for the posting in the Weekend thread, hopefully that will calm Stavros down and Ian will take note regarding being asked to leave by security. I would hate to have anything like that happen as it will spoil it for the rest of the people there, and possibly for future years.
At the moment we are in favour with the park management, but that could change rapidly if anything like that happened
-
Fully agree Brian, I don't want anyone being asked to leave if we have to. Thanks for the freq board attachment it looks very professional.
-
Right, I'm seeing the Events manager personally on Monday morning to get a definite answer regarding the camp site prices for us and the entrance fee. I'm not leaving until I get an answer and they implemented it for us (if we get a discount of course!).
After some conversations with the WP railwaymen the railway will not be running the weekend of the show and we think the entrance fee will be £1 cheaper anyway due to this reason- will confirm this on Monday. Which of course means that we can erect gazebos and tents close to the railway fence without any problems.
-
Hey Nick,
1. When is the next club night?
2. With Dennis now gone, any possibility of getting enough buoys out for a steering course?
Martin
-
Are we going to have a formal plan for sailing, or just wing it as is the norm at Mayhem Weekends %% %% %% %% %%.
Seriously when Ian has his pyrotechnics on the water we need to make sure he is the only one on the water. I will talk to him on the day and find out when he wants to, light blue touch paper and retire. We can then ensure a safe display, note to self (must find the video camera)
-
html / martin
Ian needs access into the lake to do the pyro set up. he is not have setting off by radio signal due to the amount of radios that will be there. Im sure we can all understand that. He proposes to set them off via a wire signal out to the boats. maybe one of you needs to talk to him personally before the event and not on the day. Im willing to help him out in the water to set up if he needs it.
also is there going to be a bring and buy? if so we need to advertise it ASAP. It also brings up who will man it!
Is rich tea going??
manning the carpark (same story every year!)
official photographer/s???
could someone do a video?? (be nice to catch Monk asleep again!)
is the ramp into the lake going to be put out for the disabled again??
Can we start putting the basic rules up for Mayhem. Ie freq control water safety car park etc as was said earlier in this thread
and is Martin supplying brown sauce on sunday morning with the bacon rolls?
-
I will PM Ian over this weekend to see what his requirements are. Started a basic set of rules I will modify them to include frequency control and car park, they already had water safety on them. I will post them here over the weekend, and then on the weekend thread if all in agreement
-
great mate

Mayhem 2014 Safety Notice
This is a fun event for everyone to come and enjoy themselves, so please do read the following rules carefully
All clubs, club members and traders must adhere to these rules for the safety and comfort of everyone at the event, failure to do so may result in that club, club member or trader being asked to leave the event.
1. No entering the water at all.
2. Only committee designated people are allowed in the water at all times. If you require assistance with your model please ask one of these people, do not enter the water yourself.
3. No running of fast IC boats
4. If a slow IC boat is going to be run it must be first checked by D203 Bill
5. No running of fast electric boats, without first getting permission from a member of the organising committee
6. No running of RTR models without first getting permission from a member of the organising committee
7. No running around the edge of the lake
8. Before powering up any 27 MHz or 40 MHz models you must first check the frequency board to ensure your slot is clear, if your slot is not clear please change crystals or wait for your slot to become clear.
9. Rule 8 does not apply to 2.4ghz controlled models unless 27 MHz or 40 MHz is used for other controls on the model
10. After running any 27 MHz or 40 MHz model, please remember to remove your peg from the frequency board, so others can use that frequency
11. Only traders situated in the traders area are allowed to trade at the event
12. If asked to clear the water of models, please do so as quickly as possible
I am not sure about number 11 as Ron Dean usually sets up shop near the entrance to the lake, on the water side.
Have I forgotten anything?
Does anything need removing?
-
Looks good to me!
-
I have had contact with Ian (Blaster Bates) regarding his display
It will take him 45 minutes to set up, not including anchoring the models in the center of lake Klunk is the victim for this (sorry volunteer)
He does not need all the lake so other boats can be on the water but not within 5 metres of the display boat
If people want to have navel vessels on the water for effect, that is ok, but again not within 5 metres of the display boat
People do not need to keep away from the waters edge, as he has taken into account the "BLAST ZONE & FALLOUT" his words not mine
No special signage required
He asks that through the day announcements are made on the tannoy regarding this display
No one is to use a 40MHz system within 15 minutes of the display without asking him
He will fire 1 maroon at 10 minutes before start, another 2 at 5 minutes before start, then the fun begins
The display will consist of basically it will be a few "pops" from the turrets on the Bismark . a few anti air "guns" and then 1 or 2 petrol fireballs ..will probably last less than 3 minutes. I have told him he can make it a bit longer if he wants.
We need to set a time on the Saturday when we say he can light blue touch paper, he will then know when to start setting up. I also think a bit of red and white tape to keep people away while he is setting up, so we do not get any nosey kids around him. Pete do you want to be his point of contact on the day, better one than a whole committee trying to organise this
-
Do we need badges for the organising committee, so people know who we are. I can do them real easy.
Also we have said that only committee designated people are to be in the water, so we need to say straight off that only Phil, Steph, Klunk and occasionally Stav are allowed in the water. I know the Wicksteed club set up some things in the water but during the event just those four, unless of course Wicksteed club have someone who is willing to get in and rescue boats then there will be 5
-
yep ill do the safety and water stuff with him. and anything else need that needs sorting on the day.
are the water marshals going to be wear high vis? as this will need to be made known on the day etc
also it might be handy to have a pic of the relevant idiots volunteers on the weekend at various points around the lake.
-
Wicksteed club normally donate 2-3 people to help in the water if reqd
-
I think we said about hi-vis, we might not get pictures of the Wicksteed people so I think hi-vis is the best way to go
-
probably best, me Satv and Phil on a picture would look like a police want poster!
-
Klunk, can you arrange with Ian to have and bring along out a couple of test shots?
-
will do Martin
-
Sorry I've been off forum for a little while, but we have at last managed to get confirmations from the parks events manager.
We have got a £5 per night discount off the normal campsite fee, which works out as £15 per night instead of £20. Any one wishing to take advantage of this discount needs to telephone Flo on the Wicksteed Park reception desk and mention Mayhem and you will have your price changed accordingly.
The campsite will be cordoned off as requested and will be done before any of the early Mayhemer arriving on Thursday.
We definitely have 30 tables on demand and will be delivered on Friday afternoon by Wicksteed park staff.
Due to the uncertainty of the railway being operational over the Mayhem weekend the park have unfortunately said no to an entrance fee discount this year, the actual price could be £5 if the railway isn't running but full £6 if it is. Good news for next time they will sort it out due to the parks refurb being complete, not good for this year but the next... ;)
There are some changes to the park layout due this weekend coming, I'll update you all if anything changes that affects us.
Ron Dean will be covered by the lake side rule because the area he usually sits is considered part of the model boat lake area.
I have access to 2 sets of waders if required, one belonging to me and one to WPMBC.
Wow what a weekend, I thought bank holidays were supposed to be relaxing! {-)
P.S. I have never seen Wickies lake so clear, the water quality is amazing this year, the sub boys will be happy. :-))
-
Thanks for that Nick, great work from you at the park on behalf of Mayhem. I have beer chilling for you as we speak :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Thanks for that Nick, great work from you at the park on behalf of Mayhem. I have beer chilling for you as we speak
just to clarify, are you getting him a cold beer, or are you brewing chilli beer??
[hoping its the latter!!]
-
You're weird Pete, chilli beer "whatever next Mabel?"
It is cold Stella Artois beer
-
http://www.chilibeer.com/chilibeer/Home.html
who is weird now?????
-
Probably not the strangest thing I've ever drunk if it is chilli! %)
Us RAF lads will drink anything- well almost anything! :}
Strange occurings at the model boat lake! The hedge row has been stolen!!! No really it got cut down so we have even more access to the lake! :-))
Going up to the lake on Sunday and I'll take some pictures.
-
Nick, how wide is the gate?
SubJiohn wants to bring his 12" Gato !!!
HI Martin
Thanks for getting back to me about taking the sub to mayhem show, have just been and measured up the width of the trailer and it is 4ft 2inc wide all so the buggy that the sub sits on fits inside the trailer which has all so go wheels that is 2ft 1inc wide that comes out of the trailer on tracks, hope that helps knowing the size
All the best Sub John
-
Hi martin
You don't need to worry about the gate width, it's being removed soon, but if it isn't, the hedge row beside it has been removed already and the gap must be well over 10ft.
I'll speak to Steve and he'll measure the gap for you just incase.
-
Top Man!
Thanks, I'll let Sub John know.

OK, how are we going to set out the Traders?
Just had a phone call from Ron Dean, saying for last two years Andy Griggs ( Models by Design ) so so close to the hedge, no one could get through. As there is no fence this year, how do we set out the Traders?
-
I thought they were going to be in the new amphitheatre area, if not we set up some tape and say that is as close as you can get
-
Do we have any photos of the area as it is now?
-
The outdoor amphitheatre hasn't been grassed yet so we can't use it at the moment, however with the hedge being removed we can get the traders down the right hand side of the path nearest to the railway fence, or with the construction fence being removed soon we can place them down the usual left hand side and tape off how close to the edge we will allow them to go as Brian suggests.
I haven't got any pictures at the moment but if you look at Martin's photo collection from 2013 where we see the Mayhem banner tied to the gate post and hedge row. That hedge and gate way is now gone and we have a clear route to the model boat lake side.
-
1. We do need to make sure the the Traders don't encroach on the path too much as that's been an issue in the past.
Andy won't move once he started setting up on Friday AM, shall I pop over this weekend and spray some pitches on the grass?
2. Which medals do we prefer?

I like the top left one.
If the park will let you do this that would be great, if not we need to be there early to set up some red and white tape

Hi Martin
You're more than welcome to come this weekend but me and Steve will be camping in Shropshire from this Saturday morning to Thursday morning. If you do, the construction fences near the path is going to be moved by us further back to allow better access on the Friday morning, we've agreed his with the park. Mind you that's if it's not already been removed by the parks contractors!
Steve has been up the lake this afternoon and they are sorting out what's left of the hedge roots, the gate posts have been removed allowing even better access.
But you'll see what you think when you get there and judge the best layout for the traders. :-))

Went this after noon, lovely day!
Wicksteed was crowded,even at 18:00!
Right, as Nick has already said:
All area left of path ( from level crossing to lake ) is fenced off and unavailable.
Area to right of path ( while facing lake ) is available so I guess Models by Design will go there.
I don't think we can Deans marine in there too so it will mean a bit of trek to get all of Deans stand in to the lake and he's already rang me about positioning last week!
Gate and fence have gone.
New path to left of lake but still fenced off.
New path at far end of lake that leads of to a walk around the big lake. Not sure if it goes up to the camping field.
There are some new wooden posts and wire in the big lake... no idea what that's about?!
Don't think much of the new entrance signs!!!
Some photos...

Who is is going to be there early on Friday?
We need to make sure MbD (Models by Design) are as near fence as possible!
-
I will be there early, but Phil, and Bill are staying over from Thursday, so they could be the better bet
-
My main concern is MbD marquee encroaching on the path....
-
Hi Martin
Me and Steve with volunteers from Wicksteed will be there early on Friday morning onwards to give all the help possible. Steve and I are going to move the big construction fence back to the mounds of earth to allow a wider area either side of the path to be used.
As for the posts with wire going into the big lake they are for reed beds which will be laid later in the year. Not our problem :-))
I think the park has already mentioned that the new entrance signs are not much cop and are looking to replace them, mind you you should have seen the ones before - you couldn't even read them!
We've been promised by the park that the remains of the hedge and gate will be gone this week if not me and Steve will get rid of it ourselves.
See you Friday, I'll be nipping up on Thursday afternoon to have a look and say hi to Phil, Stavros and Bill.
-
Thanks Nick, I'll see you Friday AM as well.
1. Is it an idea to move the banner from the entrance drive to the Safety fencing near the level crossing?!
2. There are a number of steering course buoys out on the lake, is there a course that we can print up?
-
Hi Martin
We can move the banner on Friday if you like its only tye wrapped temporarily to the fence and is easily removed. There are about 40 buoys in the lake available for use I've got a rather basic course that can be used which we used as a club steering course last year, I'll bring a copy along if no one has set one up.
See you Friday
-
Oh I nearly forgot!
The train will definitely not be running this weekend so we are free to use all the area to the right of the path this year which will be better for us until the amphitheater is completed for next time.

Oh dear!..... {:-{ http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2645753

Nothing new there then O0 O0 O0 O0 O0 O0

Missed you over the weekend Brian, how is the good lady?
GREAT post Nick, excellent!

Next year.
Better ground plan required but will be easier anyway once fence removed.
Better PA if possible.
Better signage / banner near level crossing, inviting people to come look round and what's going on.
Sign near 'gate' "Model boating etiquet."
Tell 'fast boaters' what's expected of them! (couple of warships got knocked about).
Define a Straight running class so more people have a go.
( EG. 1m x 30mm x 30mm. Must have engine, motor, power cut off.)
Straight running cuts off some of the lake with little running, so needs a rethink,
eg. longer course and pulled out (on the ropes) as required.
Bigger Warships display (this year's went down very well!)
Another pyrotechnics display.
Actually have "kids have a go boats!"
Better (faster!) camp stove for bacon butties!
Water proof boots!
.... and finally!
No cars allowed in lake without peg on Frequency board first!
He was just dipping his headlights.
New interesting obstacle for the steering course.
No 1:1 scale amphibious cars allowed.
Full car washes require a minimum approach speed of 30mph.
Lakeside parking £10 extra.
.... any I've missed?
Thanks again to EVERYONE involved.
Martin - still drying out my feet. {-)

Hi Martin
Looks like a normal Mayhem Weekend, my wife is getting there but it is slow progress.
How did you get a car in the lake, or dare I ask?
-
Don't ask Brian, I suffered three different emotions at the same time (I think there is a proper word for it)
Shock
Horror
And utter bemusement! :}
Good thing Stavros, Phil, Klunk, Bill and myself managed to get it out with other members helping!
Glad your wife is getting better, hope her recovery improves quicker soon.
Brilliant weekend, enjoyed by everyone I spoke to, I fully agree with Martin regarding next years improvements. I've already got speaking to Tony Newstead, Capt Povey, Geoff Dixon, Ian K, Victorian and TonyH about what we could do next time and what vessels we've got to display a grand Victorian fleet.
Really enjoyed the pyrotechnical display put on by Ian McCaffrey and Carl, I've seen some excellent pictures taken by Paul Millers of the final explosion!
If no ones objects I'm starting to write up an article for Model Boats magazine since Steve Dean is doing one for Marine Modelling International magazine and I didn't see anyone from Model Boats in attendance.
Martin, if you could send a selection of photos you have of the weekend, I'll ensure all correct creditations are properly given to the photographers. Many thanks in advance. :-))
I'm also writing a thank you letter to Wicksteed Park management if anyone old like to include anything in it please do, the parks senior management did come own to have a look around and the new MD was very impressed with our event. I don't think he realised how many of us there would be, especially camping.
WPMBC would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the Mayhem organisers for everything we have done for all the prior planning and running of the weekend. Stunning work everyone! :-))
Here's to next time!
-
Nick
I think a big thank you from everyone at Mayhem to the Wicksteed Park management, once again they have put up with us.
A couple of thought for next year, following from Martins post.
Firstly Martin do you want to keep this board open for next year with the same team? Or are there others that could be brought into the fold?
We need to start planning a bit earlier, not now but maybe a month or two earlier than this year say September/October
Give out personnel invites to everyone at Warwick, clubs & suppliers, I have got what was sent out this year will just need tweaking for next year.
We have tried for a few years to let kids have a go, perhaps we shut the lake to everyone and just let kids sail, then expensive models are not in the firing line
Straight running is a bit elitist, not many people have one. Let us set up a class of straight runner for the weekend, just like Martin has said.
Make the ropes easily removable so all the lake is available when there is no straight running
I thought fast electrics had to ask permission before running their models, it is in the rules
Signage, this goes back to starting earlier, we will have time to plan where they go
Once all the works are finished perhaps we could draw up a plan of the area and work from that
Post up the rules of the event more clearly, that is down to me not attending
On a personal note thanks to everyone who helped this year, especially Nick liaising with the park and your club made it much easier. We need to appease the weather gods for next year.
-
Will do Brian
And thanks for organising us :-))
