Probably good advice here - http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-Flac-to-MP3 (http://www.wikihow.com/Convert-Flac-to-MP3)
Can't really say, I haven't run across a flac file yet.  The google search turned up a couple of Cnet links, the comments area indicated that the dedicated converter had to be loaded with extreme caution to avoid an overload of useless toolbars and spyware.
It is quite possible that audacity (free sound editing program) could capture the file on playing (i.e. act as a tape recorder) and export (not save) it as an .mp3 file.  The software recommended by Cnet reviewers and Wiki is LAME, which is who the audacity extensions come from anyway.

 Use Freemake audio converter  ............  http://www.freemake.com/how_to/convert_flac_to_mp3_free (http://www.freemake.com/how_to/convert_flac_to_mp3_free)

Let it carry out the install and then remove the OpenCandy spam software

When installing, it makes various "suggestions".  Untick the "join in with feedback" box.
DO NOT USE THE "EXPRESS" OPTION.
Click "Custom" and unclick the "Amazon toolbar" options.  Unclick the "install tuneup utilities".  Select components, click "Custom" again.  Allow the desktop icon, install.  This should leave you with both a working converter AND a working computer.
If you use almost any freeware these days, you have to run the gauntlet of having nuisanceware thrust on you during installation.  Removing spamware after can be a long-drawn out pain in the neck.  Best to try to avoid it in the first place.

...vlc media player worked, got to like a band called, She Stole My Beer, released 2 albums and folded but apparently have reformed out in Vancouver.
Will play with and see if I can convert from here, have to have it on my memory stick for the car.
