Title: ironclads of he civil war usa.
Post by: wadsworthj on January 01, 2014, 10:39:22 am
Hi There.
Is there anyone either building or has an interest in the ironclad vessels of the American civil war ?
Or knows of any club or forum dealing with this subject.
I have on order a monitor from "speedline,"
but would like to build other iron clads, any info would be very helpful.
Many thanks John Wadsworth.

Hi John,

I have built quite a few US & Confederate armour clad warships over the years.
I am currently building the USS New Ironsides at 1/72nd scale.

The models I build are all from original museum held drawings, or from drawings by David Meager, available from http://www.marylandsilver.com/Ship.htm (http://www.marylandsilver.com/Ship.htm) or http://www.taubmansonline.com/ (http://www.taubmansonline.com/) and various US naval archives held by military museums.

Over the years i have built;

CSN David a spar torpedo boat
CSN Tennessee
USS Neosho a stern wheel turret river monitor

The quality of some of the drawings/plans available from the above is questionable, but info is very sparse and these seem to be the best currently available.

Good luck with the Speedline monitor kit, it builds into a fine model.

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian.
Oh what joy, to know that I am not alone, thanks for the info,
If you have any plans that you no longer have a use for, I will happily buy them , it will give me an idea of what I am up against,
My main interest is ironclads, union, but I will defect to the other side if the model is interesting enough.
Do not mind paddle versions.
any pics will be welcome,
Cheers, and a happy new year.   John w.

Here is a very useful document on modeling US Civil War ironclads:

http://walternelson.com/ironclads.pdf (http://walternelson.com/ironclads.pdf)

It is a document written by Steve Lund and William Hathaway.  It describes how they built a flotilla of ironclads for Radio Control,  all in a common scale of 1/72.  In all, thirteen different ships are described.

E card models do a range of ACW ships in 1/200th which could be scaled up if you don't want to detail too finely and can be downloaded straight away
