Title: K07 Dianella Flower Corvette
Post by: rockape on January 03, 2014, 09:04:27 pm
Looking at a picture of the port side of this ship and notice that it has a superstructure built on the aft section of the engine room, anybody ideas on what its for? not sure if its a gun platform or what. this picture was taken in Russia on PQ17.

Are you confusing HMS Lotus with HMS Dianella?

Here is Dianella in 1943:-

Thanks for the photo, taken I believe in Russian waters of K07 Dianella.  K130 Lotus was also in the same convoy PQ17. Looks to me as if she had the same structure.

I can't make out a deck house at the end of the engine room. However the ship is fitted for minesweeping and the winch is visible behined the rear Oerlikon tub.
I've annotated the photo you posted with differences from the Revell kit I've noticed.

Thanks for the info, seems a lot of top weight for the Arctic convoy, more ice to chip off!

ready use amunition on the forward gun.
I see in the kit it shows a stowage in the open around the gun, is this true? Assuming that this was fixed casing amunition they must have had problems with it, what do you think?

The 4" gun used separate shells and cartridges. The stowage around the gun was for ready use shells. Cartridges came up from below through a lift in the box outside the gun tub near the ladder on the port side.

Thans for that, seemed a bit odd storing the ammo outside, would have made exciting firing though!
