Is a whim cheaper than a credit card?

Martin,
If you put in search sd14 then click on uk paper models you will see why am so interested in doing this model its amazing and as my wife was born and lived in Sunderland and her dad build the sd14 as he was a plater as the shipyard but died before I got to know the man, but will be carlmt what help and advice he can give me laterI also have a great book on the sd14,s als so thinking if it could be done in 0.5 mm plastic as the card is 0.7mm thick. Regards Howard.

Would gladly help where I can Howard O0
When we built ours, we used 0.7mm thick liteply to skin the hull and decks and styrene sheet for the superstructure, but all the internal ribs and structure is the original card. To allow the ship to take the weight of the lead ballast (removable) there is a plate of 0.7mm liteply sitting on the top of the 'double bottom' structure and to give it strength in the longitudinal axis (fore and aft) two ali box sections were glassed to it. This prevents the ship from bending fore and aft. The motor is a 'Jubilee' 7 pole from Model Motors Direct and is beautifully smooth and slow.
Any questions Howard, I will gladly try to answer them.
All the best,
Carl

Well the sheets turned up on Saturday.... Hmmmm!
Great quality but much smaller than I had imagined. {:-{
Therefore I'm will to pass it on FREE to anyone that wants to do a build of it here on Mayhem.

Sling it over Martin - I'll get my dad to build it for you O0 .
He has done one or two in the past... %) %)

Just orderd my SD14 so now looking for a bit of space to build it was told posty will not beable to post it though the letter box Six big boxs of A3 card told my understanding wife i,ll see her in 1920 me think lol.
Martin this one am sure is bigger then yours.
Regards Howard.

Howard - you will need the patience of a Saint when you build it O0 .
Be warned: the parts are entirely hand drawn (no CAD) and so will be slightly 'off'. My advice: study the parts very closely (here I am thinking of all the double-bottom frames) and choose one as a 'standard' (for overall width and height) and cut all the others to match.
Lay in a bulk supply of X-Acto blades - the manilla card is very unforgiving and will blunt them very quickly.
As for glue - we found the Loctite All Purpose variety to be best - again you will need a bulk order of around 35 tubes!!!
Looking forward to your setting up a build log for this one - that way we wont clutter up Martin's thread!!! %%
All the best,
Carl
