Went to my local B& screw and they have stopped stocking plastikote paint. Anyone else seen this. Where ti buy it now? <*<
-
Hobbycraft stock it.
-
Halfrauds car emporiums do it. Not car spray, but in ours it is racked next to it.
-
There's a vast selection on Ebay under "Plastikote".
Also you could take a look at "Rustoleum" spray paints - I have used plenty of this over
the last year or so on several boats very successfully. They do a large range from Primers to Lacquerspray.
Best prices once again on Ebay and if I remember, little or no postage.
On sale in Homebase too but much more expensive.

Rustoleum is much better. I buy it online
-
plasticote is available from both wilkinsons and the range !
-
My local B&Q still stock plastikote, spray but only a small range, they have plenty of brush on pots tho.
-
For those still interested in finding a suitable priced spray paint
these are my findings regarding prices for Rustoleum paint and they do vary a lot.
Homebase all colours £9.49 / tin
B&Q all colours £7.98 /tin
Ebay(Transtools) mostly £8.73/ tin with Free postage.
Decent paint with a good selection of colours + clear Lacquer + primer.

Would that be in tins for brushing ? or as a spray paint ? don't shoot me I'm green ;)
-
Plastikote and Rustoleum paints are both spray paint items.
I have used Rustoleum on many boats with no problem at all. Great finish.
Used to be cheap on Ebay (Transtools) but Royal Mail have forced up
their prices by changing their mailing policy for pressurised tins.
Was £6.48 now £8.73 but at reduced cost if you buy 3 tins.(£6.55)

What paints would you recommend for use with an air brush set up ? I have sprayed metal components with cellulose but never sprayed wood.
-
Paul,
Never used air brush so unable to make any comment at all.
Just tins of spray paint, outdoors once weather warms up - that's the drawback.

Rustoleum is available in both. I think in cans it is 750ml & 2.5L Massive range of colours & if they don't cover it in standard then a place in Slough mixes it to RAL & colour to sample.
After about a week it goes very hard & can be polished & buffed like celly

What thinners would you need to use for air brushing please ?

Normal white spirit works well apparently. It brushes or rollers well.

Paul,
Take a look at the Transtools website for -'Rustoleum paint'
at http://www.transtools.co.uk
Quite extensive range of paint. White spirit seems to be the thinners to use.

Plasticoat is a enamel.......now the main trouble is that it is a one shot paint And will React if a second coat is applied to it.
I have had it react on me when a top coat was applied to the plasticoat primer.......AVOID it like the plauge....if you want to apply an enamel then use household gloss thinned with white spirit.
I honestly don't understand why a modeler would want to spend so much on his model to ruin it with inferior paint...Halfords acrylic spray cans are far superior as they are car paints.Fair comment, you want to airbrush you paint....Tamiya and Humbrol are FAR SUPERIOR to Plasticoat.......another disadvantage of this stuff is if you scratch your model chances are if you do a repair and recoat it will REACT......IT EVEN TELLS YOU ON THEIR CANS

For purely "painting", if you are not going to airbrush (Tamiya or Humbrol etc) then stick to Halfords rattle cans.
However, I must state that Plasti-Kote exterior satin varnish (in cans) is a superb and effective protective finish for hulls etc. A clear very hard UV resistant Polyurathane varnish that does not react with either enamel or acrylic, protects your finish and allows easy cleaning.
Been using it without problems for years on ships that are in regular use, that still look pristine.

Thanks Dave,
I have taken that on board, what other car paints can I use ? Can I use Cellulose, I am very familiar with this and have one or two colours already, your recommendations please as I really want to use a fairly quick drying Paint.

I used it once a few years back to paint a hull and didn't know then what I soon found out. When I put a second coat on oh boy did it react - reaction being an understatement. Horrible nasty stuff - might be good for banksy but not IMHO for painting models. I would rather chew mothballs and wash them down with domestos than ever use that stuff again.

I've never used it and never knew of it's existence before this thread was started, I was really just wondering what others recommend or use, I have sprayed cellulose quite a bit but wasn't sure if it was suitable for model boats but I guess I'll give it a try...........
