Hi fellas, have decided to plank the deck of the huntsman, probably going with mahogany, the question is how to apply the caulking, do I space and fill or something else, TIH....GLYN

I use black cartridge paper. I glue several planks edge on to the paper and when dry use a sharp scalpel to cut them free. Voila, planks with one edge ready caulked. Once laid some judicious sanding for a lovely finish before varnishing.

I have used many methods over the years and all are very fiddley, but the one I have found the easiest even when planking with 1/64th inch thick ply, up to around 1mm thick is to use aliphatic glue as a quick grab glue, and use e humbrol matt or satin black paint as a colouring to the glue...it doesn't affect the gluing quality of the adhesive and the surplus glue that gets onto the planks during gluing is just sanded off after it has all dried.

I use sticky back plastic, and, like Dougal99 stick the wood to it, and trim with a scalpel. No waiting for glue to dry.

I have seen it on a large model where the gaps were made using drawing pins then filled in with black body filler used for plastic bumpers Yours Scout

I use black cartridge paper as well. I cut it into thin strips with a paper trimmer lay my plank with alphatic glue then fit a strip with the glue and then the next plank. I have used this method for 12 years and had no problems.

I used grey card cut into strips, then just rubbed down, then finished with clear ronseal satin, applied with cloth, and reapplied when it starts to fade. I tried to use a light grey wash to replicate a weathered finish, but the caulking was lost, so had to rub it all down and start again. Planks were applied using alphatic wood glue, held in position with pins, front section was pre bent, and card was glued with bostick.
Hope that helps :-))
