Hey all. I cam across these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PROSES-NEW-PR-SS-01-SNAP-GLUE-SET-SQUARE-4-MAGNETIC-CLAMPS-W-16-MAGNETS-/111093171978?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item19ddab470a) magnetic clamps the other night and seemed a really good idea.
anyone used them. The american ones seem to be build slightly better but for what they are these are good. Also come across a york model company who make there own of varying sizes. I did purchase these of ebay the other night so waiting for them to turn up. SHould certainly make making my superstructure alot easier. Trying to hold it altogether while glueing is a pain.

Any pictures or links?

I have a set of these.
The magnets are very strong and hold the items in place well whilst the glue sets, have lost one of the magnets as they are not that well held in place.
A bit fiddly to use - they have not really have earned their place yet, a couple of small open ended angle plates (like these http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/ANGLE_PLATES.html (http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/ANGLE_PLATES.html)) and some magnets would have been more useful.
-
Yes any pic's? Now I've struggled to get things square and finished. but they would come in very useful for the next build

Click on this link to see them.......NOW those look like Dave's new freinds think i will have to get some most definatly

What a great idea. :-))
Shouldn't be too difficult to make these. %)

Look at the original posting, hover over "these", that's the link :-))

East to make? yup!!
A bit of angle bar and a couple of neodym bar magnets ....job done! :-))

So it is. My excuse is the early morning sunlight causing me to not notice the different colour.

Expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
yes they are expensive. Was going to make them myself but i really couldn't be bothered. We shall see what they are like and if they are worth it. Problem with modern day angle bar is very little of it is square. In gerneral comercial steel these days is absolute rubbish. I work with both comercial and aircraft grade materials as part of my job. Comercial is pure rubbish compared to what it used to be.
-
Lego works well for making 90deg angles
-
suppose there are alot of ingenious way of clamping and holding bits while u glue it.
-
Hi all
I remember seeing these in model boats mag and thought what a good thing thay are and thought to myself I'll get some of them, course time went on and buy the time i'd thought about it again do you think I could find the issue with them in NO {:-{ .So was great to see them again like a couple of people have said not cheap but anything that's anygood never is I'v allways found.Going to order some right now !!
-
well as u say captain. if it gets plenty of use its a worthwhile investment in my eyes. I could have easily made these myself to be honest with tooling i have at work. But its finding the time. I still prefer the american ones i
http://www.reynaulds.com/riteway.aspx found.
they have one in edge that you can butt up to.

More likely tolerances have been increased to aid manufacture.
For instance to be square it can be within plus or minus 2 mm. This means it can be 4mm out of square.
In the old days square was square and exactly 90 degrees, no plus or minus.
Manufacturers cry poor get standards/tolerances changed and hey presto, rubbish.

If you look in Model Boats April 2013 you,ll see a artical on how I do it .

I agree square is square !! there is no "that's near enough" well not in my book perhaps I've got an old head on young shoulder's :} :}
-
yeh i agree. there is a little leeway but some stuff is just miles off. If it is noticible looking at it without any form of square then its wrong. Mind i work in aircraft manufacturing industry. So we do work to precision when it needs.

....... & captain bligh says... "perhaps I've got an old head on young shoulder's" ........ %) based upon the statement "square is square !! there is no "that's near enough" ...I would suggest a sound mind on mature shoulders.......
I am not involved in plastic construction.....however see the European or the American variant of these magnetic clamps as a tremendous time saver in attaining good clean square construction :-)).......
Now...before someone complains about the price >>:-( ........just check out the actual cost of REM [rare earth magnet] pole pieces ............Derek

Derek,
Good point as I was quibbling about the price. :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
Martin has listed a link to cheaper ones from the US :-)) :-)) :-))
Digressing, did you see the chimney demolition?
-
RAAArty........ {-) have been involved for a number of years in the Australian manufacture of 4 pole REM transducer rings [LDVT] for hydraulic cylinders for our steel industry
May sound crazy.... %% ....but when you collect 20 baby pieces 4mm diameter x 4mm long....you must sign a hazardous material declaration :police: that you do not have a pacemaker installed.......
Quality REM pole pieces are not cheap.........I think the advertised cost for the magnet squares is a bargain :-))
Now for all those people who think they can make their own non ferrous L shaped squares....& have them totally square %)........& then insert the pole pieces so they attract O0....go for it {-)
Not only was I the designer of the 4 pole REM transducer rings :o .... I was also the inspector :D....as 1 in 10 transducer rings had a flipped pole piece due to the strong magnetic gauss
The only way I could confirm correctness of the magnet poles was to check them against a known magnetic field as below.........
[I listened to the chimney demolition on ABC radio........mind you I worked as an apprentice for 4 years in its shadow...... so it was no great loss to me].............Derek

i prefer the american one as they look better quality. However i don't know if it would be cheaper to get them to the UK to be honest for me. Plus it takes alot longer. Will see how they are. hoping the arrive today when i get home from work.
