Title: Model Boating can be dangerous
Post by: BrianB6 on March 02, 2014, 09:12:08 pm
From the ABC news
River Torrens drowning highlights dangers, as family mourns model boat enthusiast The family of a man who drowned in the River Torrens in Adelaide at the weekend is urging more signs be put along the banks to warn of the dangers of entering the polluted river.
Nick Kastrappi, 51, disappeared while trying to retrieve his remote-controlled boat.
Police will investigate if he got stuck in thick mud.
Mr Kastrappi had enjoyed his hobby for 30 years but on Saturday it may have cost him his life.
The dead man's sister Helen Atsidaftis says her brother probably gave no thought to the danger.
"He's spontaneous, he wanted his boat so he went to his boat, he probably thought he'd paddle out and paddle back [but he] just didn't make it this time," she said.
Mr Kastrappi arrived at the Torrens about 2:00pm and launched his boat, but it capsized soon after that and he swam out seeking to retrieve it.
Nearing the bank on his return, something went wrong.
