As Easter Monday is very soon to be upon us, just a quick reminder for those who fancy an event with a bit of a challenge, we are again running model boats along the navigable section of the Chichester ship canal, the event is open to any electric / scale / sail model. Models will cruise the length of the canal with the operators following along the canal tow path. A rescue vessel is accompanying the flotilla in case it's required ! hope to see many new faces , of modellers having fun ! jon
-
Jon, Can I ask whereabouts the start is on the canal, I would like to come along and have a watch (I don't have a boat ready yet so would be just me I'm afraid)
I'm in Eastbourne so would be coming along the A27.
Ian
-
The start point is at the basin.
If you are coming in via the A27, you want to take a right turn at the Stockbridge Roundabout, A286 Chichester and Midhurst. Carry on down about 300 yards, straight through the lights and then turn right by The Waterside Inn. Basin is on your right, pay and display parking along the pond edge, may actually be 2 hour parking, not too sure.
-
What time do you meet up and Start off???????
Do you have a post code so my sat nav can find it??
-
Depart the basin at 12pm, postcode ( for the pub! ) is PO19 8DT.
Jon would have responded however he claims to have been driving this morning, apparently 6am. Dont believe a word of it!
-
This all sound like fun to me. Is there room for a 1/16th Slipway Tamar ?
IF the weather is fine then its may be worth the trip from Stevenage to join you all. Do I need to book in? If yes where and when do i do it.
-
Thanks guys, I'll be there, unfortunately boat-less but will still be good.
Ian
-
no need to book in bill jst turn up and play ! why no boat ian ?
-
Because I now have four non finished, two started subs I had off Rich from here, The Bugsier kit arrived last Tuesday again bought off this forum and my Model Slipway Vliestroom which is about 95% finished but not had it's maiden voyage yet, would be a bit embarrassing to stick her on the canal for the first time and watch it go down {-)
-
did you part with your only truck ?
-
Yes it's now in Rich's hands, It was the white/red one he put a picture in the Tamiya truck thread.
I now have two part built sub's to play with :o
-
Yay! SWMBO and the mother in law have now moved the 'family' meal to sunday so I can come along and join in. Pribably sink/burn the motor out/have some kind of drama or make the usual neebie mistakes :embarrassed:
-
OK I needs some more info about this event.
So we take the boats down the canal , How do we get back to where we started?
Do I need to get the wife to drive the car to the other end or do i run the boat back up the canal
If someone would like to pm me a phone number so i can have a chat on Monday night this week to get the details. I want to join in the fun but some more detail to a first timer would be a big help.
Oh and another thing how long dose it take and how far is the walk?
-
Bill Have alook at previous years threads on this all the INFO is there..........they walk down turn around and walk back......I read that
Dave
-
pm sent bill , sorry ive been out all day so havnt been near computer . jon

Sundays trail with the new motor and prop went very well. Lots more power at low revs and I can now stop her on the spot. Going full ahead the springer tries to become a sub but she trundels along at walking pace ok and the bateries lasted much longer than the previous 20 minutes. I did not get a good guage of her endurance as I was chatting with the owner of a nice HMS Fearless which seemed to have more electronics and gismos than a F1 car.
-
Is Giles still a member of the Chichester club? He has an armoured cruiser that he restored a couple of years back and told me lots about the club when I saw him at Chi model engineers. I have moved to Somerset so sadly could not join you (Though I am in a similar position to Ian in having lots of boats under way but none in sailoing condition!)
-
Looking forward to the day. Currently faffing around with the springer trying to fit better batteries and tidy the electrics up.
Now realised there may have to be some improvements to the superstructure to fit it all in {:-{
-
providing your boat is watertight everything should be fine , were now hoping the weather will be kinder than it was last september , !
-
That was a great day out
A nice cruise / weed clearing trip. My little springer died 1/3 of the way into the return leg - I think I cleared weed from the props about 15 times! The second set of batteries died 20 minutes later - does help if I connect both batteries rather than just the one but it is my boat to learn on. Looking forward to next year - already have a few ideas
-
Well we made it all the way down the canal and back with only a bit of weed round both props. :-))
Can I say a BIG thank you to all the folks that made this event possible. I had a lovely day and the M25 was clear on the way home.
I want to do it again next year and see if i can get lots more Stevenage MBC members to join in as well.
-
Here's two more pics
-
Looks like you all had a good day, wished i had gone now.
But hay just moved house and had one or two boxes to unpack.
Will have to try and make the next one with my springer and barge
-
Great images and I recognised one of those taking part! I am pleased that the day went well. Batteries do seem to be tinkers don't they? I am just getting into RC and I am trying to unravel all the different types and their charging/storage peccadiloes. I must read the relevant topics again on the forum.
Will any footage be uploaded on Youtube?

Stills only my wife has not worked out how to do video yet. :D
-
Fair enough, my parents have a cinecamera but have only taken sample footage to show they could use it and then forgot again!
-
thank you to all those people who made the effort to join in , im glad you had an enjoyable day , i know mary and i did , it would have been nice with a bit more breeze to have kept the barge sailing a little faster rather than had to rely on its donkey motor so much , maybe next time ??? jon

Here is a few more pics of the day.

More.

The Ballad of Bunny and Chick
Bunny and Chick set out to sea on a beautiful pea green boat
Springer tug, black and white.
On some sort of 'Stuffed toys for Justice' style protest...
A hungry dog looked on!
Bunny looked a little worse for wear, following a night down a nearby rabbit hole...
-
As Bunny and Chick left the basin,
they passed the big, slow, Ohio.
Whose owner was busy taking pictures of his own model, very nice too %)
-
But no sooner had Bunny and Chick got round the corner....
Bunny fell over the side!
Did he fall or was he pushed?
Chick wouldn't tell.
Chick tried valiantly to push Bunny to the side,
using the big, sharp propellers fitted to the
beautiful pea green
black and white Springer Tug....but to no avail.
Bunny was completely waterlogged. <:(
-
Bunnys owner tried to dry Bunny out,
By wringing bunnys neck...
But Bunny was soaked through and through!
So Bunnys owner dumped Bunny on the tow path..
And the dog ate him :}
-
Bunny now better. Washed and dried by wifey :-))
-
? ? ?
What is this material in which you navigate? {:-{
-
Your Bunny was carried home by one of my crew {-)
Now I have to say i expected him to demand a ransom for the safe return of bunny to the Portsmouth club tent. The normal fee would be a beer all round BUT i didn't find the pub. Im sure there is one , maybe next time i will find it.
Don't lose your bunny it's not funny :}
-
With Bunny? :-))
-
how did you miss the pub ? its on the corner as you pull in from the road , im told the food is very good there !
-
Jon My friend If you had said do you fancy a pint Bill ! That why i didn't know Jon. However next time mate that would be very nice of you. :-))
-
i couldnt drink a whole pint of coffee ! i dont drink beer etc
-
i couldnt drink a whole pint of coffee ! i dont drink beer etc
No Problem I will have to drink your beer then!!
I have to say Jon I enjoyed this event very much and I'm looking forward to doing it again. I hope to be able to get a few more from Stevenage MBC next time as its worth the drive there and back to take part.
Keep at it? :-))

It's a Canal

-

-

-
woukd be beer but we have to be responsible :} )
All children and pets to wear lifejackets at all times {-) {-) {-)
Ned
-
Be nice to your bunny!
-
needs to buy himself a harness , i hear the elf n safety crowd are after him !
Did your faithful hound have a lifejacket? :D :D
Or is he/she the Triumph Car alarm %%
Ned
-
no mary hasnt got her own lifejacket , shes learnt to swim very well over the last 18 months , but prefers the sea rather than a canal .
-
Well as befits the 'tail end charlie' operators...here is the report from the slow end of the cruise.
I was running Ohio with Jon running his Thames Barge, neither being the fastest in the fleet. Still faster than the Bank Holiday traffic on the A27 though :} .
We soon found ourselves at the back and dropping further behind. taking photos and waiting for the wind to blow contributed to our slowness, behind the pack.
-
Jack was on rescue boat duties for the day, here seen doing his best 'Jack Hargreaves, Out of Town' impression, while chewing on a sandwich.
-
We rolled in to the half way point while everyone else was tucking into munchies or changing batteries. I brought my own mooring stake just in case..
-
And then we were off. Getting under the bridge is an act of faith, as you have to loose visual contact with your model, either before or after going under the bridge, followed by a 200 yard walk round the house on the turn of the canal, and up a path to the bridge. Still we did it with no collisions..this time!
And then the pack were off again, leaving us slow coaches to our own devices.
-
So, me, Jon and the dog, decided to just enjoy the views and take our own sweet time getting back :-)
-
Then I got to rescue something, and got rained on. Perfect canal trip :}
-
And just for you canal workboat fans...one of the trusts workboats was out of the water for a bit of TLC...So I took some photos. Good weathering reference and suitable bunny tiedown points on this one, I notice :-))
-
Showing a version of keel cooling methinks.
Thanks UBN for the photojournalism.
Must have been a great day out
Ned
