I have been bitten by the sailing bug with my DF65 but now have hit the problem of being stuck with the A rig as all the rig kits are out of stock. The last time I took her out was B/C rig weather which meant I got to enjoy being a submarine a lot. Yesterday while off sick from work I did a lot of surfing and thinking and noticed the Footy. The idea now is to either get a kit / second hand / build my own hull then make a full set of rigs. Thinking of the Ranger plan if I have to build(looks simple and no fibreglass ). The idea is to have something to use while I am waiting for the stock situation to sort itself out(also like the Mirco Magics but there is another lack of stock story).
As I only have a motorbike to transport my boats I am stuck in the small hull length classes and the joy of trying to assemble and rig everything lakeside
-
Have you tried Tim Long at Abersoch Boatyard Services?
I have had good service from him.He keeps most spares in stock.

They have no rig kits at the moment, neither do RCYachts as I think they are waiting for stock to arrive from China.
I suppose all I am looking for is something to use while I am waiting as I am impatient !
Then I would also have something for my nephew to have a go with.
-
Apparently Graupner will have some some Micro Magics in stock from the 20th of May........ Hmmmmm
-
Having sailed both, the Dragon does it for me.
It is easily made watertight also.
You can even get a swing rig for it to help with transport.

Thinking of your problem, mine too as it happens,
if b and c sails are available from House Martin, Cat Sails
and Graphic, then just use the A rig spars and bend on the
appropriate rig for the day.
Bit of a pain but it keeps the hull wet. :-))
When the rig kits tumble out of the container we can make
permanent set ups.
-
True, but I would rather wait until I can rig the lot in one go - it took me a while to rig the standard sail and as a lot of the rigging is superglued it would be a pain. And that got me thinking about how good the DF65 looks. A 'proper' racing yacht, expensive even. But a footy looks like a non serious FUN boat
-
What about a wee nip plenty of places online were you can download the free plans or can order the kit from trablet publications
-
I wonder how they handle in 20 knot plus winds?
-
@Z750Jay:
I would think the Footy and Micro Magic would be out of the question in big weather.
In fact if the DF65 is seriously in need of the B rig, you should stay home with a nice warm cuppa!!
Seriously though.... I have a B rig for my DF, have not needed it in months of sailing. We often sail at the top of A rig and you get an occasional wipeout but most of the time it is manageable. Instead of sailing downwind, sail slightly off the wind (broad reach) - more speed, less drama...
I imagine the rigs will come back in stock - the entire world seems to have been waiting for complete kits - they have just restocked USA, UK and Australia in the last week or so.
If you can get an A rig you could cut the lower mast section to suit, that is the only difference I believe. You need to get sails separately anyway (unless you are making them?).
Be patient, I am sure they will restock!
-
Still out of stock here in the UK :(
It's the spares situation that is a pain. As I have to rig /derig at the lake side each time I sail I know stuff is going to get broken/lost etc. Already lost the Jib counter weight and as I am trying to keep within the class rules I have to buy one from the manufacturer.
So I suppose what I am really after is a backup for the DF that can have multiple rigs so that when she is in dry dock I have something else to enjoy. The ability to handle 20+mph would be great as even my springer has snags in those conditions
If I can find something that will fit in the carry case for the DF SWMBO will be happier with me

Hi,
I have a racing footy, just built for speed.
One made from a plastic bottle.
A Thames sailing barge
One Chinese Junk.
I have had them out in some pretty big winds but they survive.

Footy's are great fun, but in my experience, not for use in the heavier conditions.
mrpenguin - just and comment on MM's in heavy conditions - I have two MM's and find them to be one of the best boats around for sailing in the nasty conditions 20+ mph or knots. Another really great ruff weather boat is the CR 914. Posted a picture of a recent CR 914 national event held in measured 20+mph winds and one of my favorite pictures of a MM in some heavy weather.
I know it seems hard to image a little guys like the MM in winds of that speed, but this is well documented around the planet. Don't want to change the subject but just wanted add my 2 cents. :o

@Boomer:
Thanks for the update on the MM - I have seen one on a stand but have never seen one on the water, they are pretty rare in my part of the world.
The CR914 is new to me...
-
Hopefully the MM's will be in stock towards the end of May - I may be able to sneak one past SWMBO as I will be building a Flower Class corvette over the next few months so she will be moaning about that and the MM will fit in the same case as my DF65.
-
Hi Boomer, Love the sailing pictures not sure what MM's are? Is this a half Marbleheadsize size boat about 25 inches loa?
I favour 30 inches plus for a yacht, I sailed a 20 inch Americas Cup yacht for a while but the wind went by over the top of the sails, but that is pond sailing for you!
Regards Roy
-
Come on roycy..... :o everyone knows what M&M's are {-).....Derek
-
Hi Roy , the MM is better known here as the Micro Magic.
Half Marblehead is the RG 65 at 655 mm
Both sail well in heavy winds.
Derek M&Ms add too much weight <*< <*< <*< {-)

Hi DW decoy I am a MM peanut addict, trying to give up so it's cold turkey for me at the moment!
Hi Netley, thanks I had not made the connection, I am sorely tempted to construct a RG 65 though. Have a couple of models in the pipeline beforehand.
regards Roy

Thinking now of bulding a Wee Nip specifically for use in stupid wind speeds ok2
Will get the Trappet kit and experiment from there.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a Trappet Kit? Googled it but came up empty. I built two V 12 Footy's (Victor Models) Very easy build and fun to sail in light wind conditions. The only issue I had with them was the hatch shoe box cover and the opening for the rudder's push rod are not very water tight and in heavier winds would permit water to get in the hull. Never had a major problem - low cost project and fun.
-
It is "traplet" - see http://gb.trapletshop.com/wee-nip-set
-
Thank you MrP. Very nice kit! Laser cut would be the way to go!

-
another source is the wooden boat magazine published in the us they have plans and instructions for a footy called Brando at a very reasonable price it is delivered electronically so there is no waiting or shipping charges
-
I think the laser cut wood set was only £25 so will be ordering one this weekend and hopefully SWMBO will not notice it amungst the current build !
-
the vintage model boat co do a footy ...all laser cut with keel rudder mast and sails for I believe £45.00...seems good value, tony
-
Just waiting for my Wee Nip wood pack and plans to arrive. Did get a reply from Graupner re Micro Magic availabilty - 21 of November!
-
Wee Nip plans, DVD and wood pack are here :} . Now I have something to do at lunch time at work!
-
your supossed to be maintianing our fighting fleet , not making model yachts !
-
Does a Footy count as part of the fighting fleet???!
-
Given the current state of the fleet it probably does. The RN seems not to have enough people to man the ships it has let alone a carrier or two
