Hello,
I am currently building a 48 inch stern wheeler and powering it with steam. The paddle wheel is 5 inches in diameter.
What would be the size of the Pittman arms on the wheel shaft, from center of hole to center of hole?
Any help would be appreciated.

Have to agree with Umi , that build is great. have been watching it years.

:o a chain drive via a converted DC drill does not have Pittman arms ....unless I am "blinded by the light".................. Derek

Thank you so much for all your replies. I have enclosed a picture of the paddlewheel to hopefully help with my quest for the Pittman Arm dimensions.
Yes, derekwarner_decoy, it would be simpler to electrify, but if something is not difficult, it is not as much fun. I am using a 1983 Maxwell Hemmens Cayton engine. I could not bring myself to use a belt drive after all this work. 3 years in the making so far.

Hi Bob,
The attached PDF may be of some help... you will certainly need to reduce the Caton engine speed to drive a sternwheel.
But you will need the engine speed to be high enough to produce enough power... it's a bit of a balancing act. A reduction of 3:1 or 4:1 should be sufficient.
Paddlewheel speed needs to be around 100 - 120rpm MAX
