My newly acquired Robbe F-16 has the optional short helical aerial fitted to it...I also have the long metal aerial. What's the disadvantages of the shorter aerial, chaps...loss of signal, I guess? The radio will be installed in a sub, by the way.

There is a marginal loss of signal range. noticeable, but not enough to worry about under normal circumstances.
Using in a sub however, I would do a little range testing before fitting to your pride and joy

Cheers, E2V...I guessed as much. Think I'll refit the long metal aerial, just to be on the safe side...

My last Fleet system had a short stubby aerial (40 Mhtz.) and I found it only had 20 odd feet range. I replaced it with a telescopic one and range is out of sight now.

Cheers Roy...metal one due to refitted after I've finished me cuppa.

Job done...funny, the FC-16 aerial seems to be shorter than the one on my old F-14. Anyone else noticed that?
Rich
-
At the risk of sounding vulgar, the important length is when it's extended. :embarrassed:
Rest assured that the one you have is the one which came new with the Tx.

Absolutely Boss...no length = problems.

Oh yes, I know it is...I have absolute faith in your good self, Boss.

(I've just noticed that the image has come out sideways...how strange?)

I use the helical aerial on my FC16, never had any range problems, although I tend to keep the sub close by, otherwise you can't see squat. It's easy to change if you choose to.

On our club lake I often go out on long distance patrols...about fifty/sixty yards or so away from me (that's surfaced) but when running submerged I tend to stick close in. When I had the Neptune with the F-14 fitted with a helical aerial, I did notice at odd times that the failsafes would cut in when sailing at a distance, but with the metal aerial fitted, there were no such problems.
