Now I am coming back into the hobby again after a break of a few years, I am looking at upgrading my older cheap 2.4 systems.
It was suggested I consider the Spektrum range of transmitters.
Can anyone give any comments about these and which would be most suitable.
The particular use for this TX will be in a fast electric boat so steering wheel variety is best I believe
Thanks

i have three spektrum txs , a dx5e as a spare , a dx6i and 7s , the 7 is my main use radio , it does more than enough to make me not need a different setup , all of them are the stick type set though as i prefer them , having tried a wheel type twice i couldnt get on with them

Sticks or steering wheel it's up to you. I'm not really fond of the steering wheel because I've been used to sticks from an early age. Plus car/surface radio usually have three or four channels tops.
I have a FE boat (proboat blackjack 29) and mostly scale(ish) boats. I run them all off a DX7s currently.
Though it's aircraft oriented, you get decent flexibility in terms of programming. But it's nowhere near as flexible as an OpenTX-based radio when inputs can be freely remapped to channels. I might get myself a FrSky Taranis for Christmas. But for more conventional usage patterns a DX6/7/8 will be appropriate.
Anyway get a good radio from the start so that you can have a single TX for all your models (just have to buy extra RXs for each new model). Less stuff to haul to the pond.

With my yachts and tug boats I prefer sticks, but for the fast electric one I found the wheel made a massive difference on cornering

Most makes are OK for slow movers, but
as the fast electric and IC boys will tell you,
Get the best you can afford Stick or Wheel
for your fast one :-))

I use a Dx6i for my simple boats who just require throttle rudder and maybe some lights.
It´s perfekt for that and the OrangeRx or LemonRx are really good and cheap.
In addition to this I just developed a Multi-Switch system, which runs in my Dx6i to be able to control a few more functions.
Would probably buy it again, well maybe today I´d prefer a Taranis, which is nearly the same price (but recievers are more expensive).
