Title: International Model Boat Show - 2014
Post by: big_bri on September 21, 2014, 07:41:09 pm
Hi Gents.
Some of us are planning to attend this year, can anyone recommend accommodation near by.
This will be our first time and are pretty clueless as to what`s available.
Any help would be most appreciated :-))

Hi Brian
Google map CV31 1XG which is where the Leamington Exhibition Centre is (then search for hotels).
The nearest town is Leamington Spa which has a Travel Lodge and a Premier Inn, plus a couple of B and B's - all within easy drive of the show.
I used to live 20 mins away, but now live 3.5 hrs drive  <:(
Cheers
Danny

You could  stay in Telford plenty of accommodation  , see the International IPMS on the Saturday  and go over to  International boat show on Sunday. if you haven't  visited  the  Telford  show it   is one of the world largest model shows  with plenty  to see  both models and traders.

 From Meridian....
FRIDAY 7th – SUNDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2014
WARWICKSHIRE EXHIBITION CENTRE

The International Model Boat Show is returning to the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre from 7th – 9th November 2014 and visitors are guaranteed a packed hall with well over 600 models on the club and society displays, plus attendance by over 20 leading specialist suppliers.

The venue has been extended since the 2013 event, so there is now the space for each club to display more of their members work and also welcome new clubs and exhibitors this year.

To date nearly 30 clubs and societies are confirmed as attending this unique exhibition with some of the finest marine models on show.

At the show there will be a number of celebrations;

50th Anniversary of the Land Speed Record

The Bluebird Supports Club will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the successful Land Speed Record attempt at 403.1 mph.  50 years ago Donald Campbell broke both the land speed and water speed records in Australia.  Work is continuing on the Conistone Bluebird, and it will be back in the water by 2017 to mark the 50 year anniversary of the sad death of Donald Campbell.    The vessel will eventually reside at Coniston’s Ruskin Museum.

190 years of the RNLI
The Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society will be celebrating this milestone on their stand.  The RNLI has saved more than 140,000 lives since its foundation in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck. The name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 1854, and cork lifejackets were first issued to crew members in the same year.

The 20th century saw the RNLI continue to save lives at sea through two world wars. Lifeboats moved from sail and oar power to petrol and diesel, and the first women joined their crews. Recent years have seen a significant expansion of the service, with the introduction of RNLI lifeguards and the first lifeboat station on an inland waterway, both in 2001.

120th The Manchester Ship Canal officially opened 1st January 1894.
The formal opening of the Canal was conducted by Queen Victoria in May 1894, but before this royal visit an earlier opening had taken place that year on New Years' Day which was just as well celebrated.  There will be a display of the uniforms, plans and a model of the Steam Tug “Kerne.”.

The Surface Warship Association will again lead a poignant sailing tribute at the poolside during the 2 minutes silence on Remembrance Day.  There will also be songs from the 1940 wartime era poolside throughout the day also.  For younger visitors there will be ‘children’s hour’ at the poolside between 1pm and 2pm over the weekend.

Exhibition Manager, Avril Spence said “we are really looking forward to our boat show this year, last year was a very successful event enjoyed by thousands and with the larger venue and more clubs and special celebrations we are planning a really exciting show for our visitors”.

Confirmed trade exhibitors include;
Barry's Model Lettering, Clevedon Steam, Component-Shop.co.uk, Deans Marine, Five Star / Starloc Adhesives, Howes Models, Macs Mouldings, Mantua Model UK Ltd, Marine Modelling International / Traplet Publications Ltd, Mastman, Metcalf Mouldings, Microgyros,  Model Boat Bits, Models By Design, Mount Fleet Models, Prop Shop, S & M Tools, SHG Model Supplies, Speedline Models, Tony Green Steam Models and Vintage Model Boat Company.

As the ONLY 3 day marine modelling exhibition dedicated to all aspects of marine modelling this is an event not to be missed – book your tickets NOW to take advantage of the specially discounted rates which are only available until 31st October (see www.modelboatshow.co.uk).  Social media users can follow all the latest news and updates by following @MeridienneEx (#IMBS) on Twitter or via Meridienne Exhibition’s Facebook page.

Hi Everyone,

Now that full info about the show is on the forum, it's probably a good time to let you all know that once again I will be acting as Pool Master and providing the audio system at pool side. For those who have been to the show over the last couple years will know I introduced a session which has become known as 'Steve's Speciality Slot'. This is when we get the weird, whacky, unusual or just plain stunning items onto the pool. It's a fast change-over session with the emphasis on action to entertain show visitors.
So if you want to be part of the fun, see me at the pool side as soon as possible or add to this thread or PM me.
I look forward to hearing from you all.
Steve Dean

Looking forward to the show, sounds like it'll be a good year with a lot more clubs exhibiting this year.
There isn't a bring and buy stall but there are plenty of traders to buy from, I think Howes Models had some complete second hand models for sale last year but there isn't a separate one.

I'm going with the Wicksteed Club for all three days plus the set up day! Booked my leave for almost a year to ensure I wasn't working over the weekend, not going to miss another show like two years ago! <*<

That's a shame Klunk, looking forward to our usual amusement over three days but looks like I'll have to make do with one! We'll have to give Phil his yearly present on Saturday then, I think you'll like his present!

Hi Kenny

From the stand layout I've seen Phil will be opposite the Wicksteed Stand in the first third of the hall, well I'm guessing it's Phil, I should say that Black Heath club will be there! :}

Well gentlemen (and boating lassies) it's just over a week to go. One of the things that I'm keen on is to have boats on the pool when the doors open to the paying visitors. Therefore if you've got something you want to test and or just have a sail with then there will be 'Free Sailing' at 10.00. This will be for at least 30 minutes each day (maybe 1 hour depending on how the programme works out).
Just come and see me at poolside and book your frequency slot if your on 27 or 40 Mhz.

I still want to hear from more of you regarding 'Steve's Speciality Slot'. In case you've not exhibited before this is a session for the weird, wacky, unusual or just fantastic to take to the water. It's a fast change over session designed to deliver action and entertainment. It creates a big crowd round the pool.
If you want to know anything more just add to this thread, send me a mail or come and see me at poolside. I will be on-site all day on the set-up day (Thursday) and of course at poolside throughout the duration of the show.
Steve Dean (Poolmaster)

May I ask a favour please:  Could we please have lots of photos, plus an overall review of the show, together with detail info on exhibits that may be unusual or particularly outstanding.

I am hoping to get up there on the Saturday and may take some pictures myself.  I don't normally do the indoor shows, and reports on a recent indoor show hardly gave any real idea about it.

Stop Press Announcement ……. new addition to the 'Speciality Slot'  - Young Catherine will swim the pool towing Stav wearing his BatMan costume.

Unfortunately Martin will not be taking any photographs as he's been arrested by the Peterborough branch of the Internet Police for offering to take any requested photo's.

Well the car and trailer are loaded and this time tomorrow set-up will be underway. Don't forget that I would like to have some boats on the pool each morning when the show opens at 10.00am so if you've got something you want to run or test then come and see me. I look forward to seeing everyone who's exhibiting or just visiting the show and wish you all a great time.  :-))

When is this show?  So far I see no news reporting, photos, info on what may (or may not be) on display.
Surely if it started today there must be something model boat related to write about?
I hope this thread is not going to be another "Blackpool" . . .
Still unsure whether it is worth 4 hours driving in the rain to go to.  By Monday, too late !

If it is two hours each way, as it was for me, then definitely well worth it. Hundreds of first class models on display plus a lot of traders. What's not to like?!

Hi Bob

Started today at 10am and had a steady flow of visitors to the exhibition centre. Plenty to look at, and buy!
Some very good quality models on display, good food and coffee, and some very nice new models being shown by the traders- Ron's new TBD, mount fleets new Mk 1 chariot, and if you are interested the aluminium man is there selling litho plate. Won't say where my camera is but would have uploaded some pictures if I had remembered to pick it up! :embarrassed:

Some great pics that Nick never took, mind you I can let you all into a secret, there was a stranger wandering about in a very Conservative shirt.....with a tie, who just might have had something to do with it  O0 beware this man in disguise he is an impostor....bring back our leader.
Today am going to have a look at some of the boats in the pics, and with luck eat cake......
Twas a very busy day yesterday, I was defo down on my tea intake, thank heavens my trainee on the stand was at hand (cheers Stav)
Chat with all later

(I can eat cake this year, have new knashers, had to turn down such kind offers from Martin at MACs mouldings to make a set out of boat fittings, and Guy who was more that happy to do a Lego set  :D :D :D

Stop press news from the Pool Masters all seeing view point.

Mrs Stav was verbally arm twisted to having a go in the Children's hour along with 5 other ladies. We asked Catherine for her view on her mums boat steering capabilities and she replied, "goo, goo, ga, ga, goo, ugh". Which in Welsh translates to "crap but better than my Dad!"

Much more worrying ...... despite help from MI5 and Interpol we have been unable to identify the suspicious bloke wearing a shirt & tie who spent 6 hours on Friday taking photographs !!! Informants say he is connected with some kind internet activity and the appropriate agencies have contacted GCHQ to monitor communications.

Also we have to report the theft of silverware. A gang from a spec of wind blown rock in the Irish Sea have blagged a piece of shiny metal for the second year in a row. Rumour has it they are planning to return in 2015 to complete a hat-trick. How do we stop them? Answer's please on a small floating piece of balsa!

And finally .... on the MACS mouldings stand there were a selection of new 1/12th figures including a lady named Maxine, who (putting this as delicately as possible) was of good size proportions. Apparently Phil fell in love and purchased six but they made his boat capsize!

More scandal will follow after the last day.

Steve.

I'm sure that Maxine will be affordable - going for a thong I think.

As for Martin, an absolute disgrace, plain shirt and tie - what is the world coming to? I did ask him to remove the latter as it was a risk if he bent over moving machinery but I must give him full credit for not dangling it in the steak and kidney. (mind you, the rate that it disappeared it was not altogether surprising).

Some years back I inquired about a particular model, The James Braidwood
(See Thread below)
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,13709.msg131023.html#msg131023

In all the shows I have been to, I have never noticed one on display, I had been advised that only 50 or so were made. Anyway today a model took my eye as I new I recognised it from somewhere but was not sure, speaking to members of the Bournville club on who's stand it was displayed, the owner had purchased it a while back at the Blackpool show but had no further info.

So a definite visit worth while for me.

I think what struck me most when looking around was the sheer uncountable number of man hours that went into building all those models. It's quite amazing when you think about it. And it was all good to superb quality stuff too, no sub standard models at all that I noticed.

Your absolutely  right Colin. The models are fantastic and diverse from the static models of the spit head review up to the most complicated submarines. The ingenious  way's that modellers conquer build problems sometimes amazes  me. The quality of the paint jobs are amazing as is the weathering on models.

Well I finally got a day on the Stevenage MBC stand today. I have to say i enjoyed the day and i'm sure SMBC members who have been there all weekend have had a good time and made a few more friends. All in all a good show. :-))

Well I made it there today, the exhibition area is now larger so more room for clubs, it could have done with a couple more traders but overall still a fantastic show.
I saw quite a few models there I had not seen before, which was good to see. I had a chat with a few of the guys from the Wicksteed club and of course Phil. He tells me he is going to start up a shop in competition with LIDEL, called ABBOTS FOOD EMPORIUM, he has a large amount of stock to start up with, thanks to KLUNK and the Wicksteed club.

No pictures I am afraid, camera has died not sure why.

found this an interesting one Finnjet?

if I heard right met its demise by running ashore and was broken up

turbine sound is quite loud on the video but managed to catch it dropping anchor, liked the stabilisers at side as well

Aye - it's a grand model is that Finnjet.. You are close with the summation of her demise, but she wasnt broken up because she ran aground. She was sailed to Alang (India) for scrapping where, as is usual practice, they run them up the beach to scrap. She got her own back though by bankrupting her breakers as she cost far more to scrap than her value......because she was made of unusually thick and ice-strengthened steel which was not allowed for in her bid price!!!!!

Many thanks for posting the pics and the video Martin, From our point of view(Wicksteed Park) we probably had our busiest year to date especially with the Victorian fleet and vintage boats and kits on the stand. Being situated next to the Action/ Component stand did little to ease the strain on the wallet and with 'Steamboat phil's' stand on our left flank we all just soaked up the humour and quirkyness ( if there is such a word) that engulfed the whole area. Sorry I missed so many of you, Klunk and co., but I can no longer do three straight days on the stand as in past years so needed to take a break.

I found myself staring at Martin for several seconds before I had to be told by Nick that 1. it's rude to stare and 2. it was the hairy top lip creapy crawly that had gone missing and apparently missing for some time, so much for my powers of observation.

Martin I will PM you a few pics of the type of tie that I wear that would still maintain your bright and colourful image whilst retaining the 'I'm the Governor image' that a shirt and tie at these sort of occasions conveys

Well I had a great show, I think my favorite model has to have been the really weathered tug on the Anglia club stand.
I still hurt from all the laughing we had over the show, I do seem to have devolped a strange looking over my shoulder twitch, but at the moment at least I am not seeing strange things on my boats....you know things like, ooohh...the odd toothbrush, denture cleaner, cans of food....and of course hard centre sweets  O0 O0      beware the wikki club.....and of course the Klunk, and it seems a few others.... :o

Great time catching up with everyone amd making a few new friends ( steamboat apprentice wouldn't let me buy and fishing boat from Andy --models by design-- just so I could put Maxine on board......or indeed her alter ego..which made SA blush.... :embarrassed: )

Sorry  missed you Ian, could have planned the big whiz bangs for wikki

Look forward to catching up with you all soon  :-))

Hi everyone, I would just like to take the time to thank all those who contributed to the pool activities over the three days. It was great to have lots of models on the water as the doors were opened to the paying visitors and we managed to maintain a full programme throughout each day.

The Children's Hour on Saturday and Sunday were very popular and hopefully provided inspiration for new youngsters to join the hobby. Many thanks to all those who helped out during these sessions. The crews from the Surface Warship Association and Manx MBC did a sterling job.

All round it was a great show. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves (whether exhibitor or visitor) and had great time at the show. There is no doubt that the variety and quality of the models were nothing short of magnificent.

Thanks everyone.

Steve Dean - Poolmaster.

Hi Steve,

On behalf of the Lifeboat Enthusiasts' Society we would like to thank you for the magnificent job you did as pool master and keeping activities on the pool going throughout the day and managing the changeovers between slots with boats coming off the water and boats going on.

Hello one and all, and from a Manxie back on that "wind blown rock" I'd like to pop up and say a great big thank you to all the Clubs and organisations that voted us tops.  The standards of display improve every year.   We will be back, but I'm sure we'll follow existing precedent.   We thank you too for the interest shown in live demonstrations, we'll certainly create more area for that on our return.

Oh, I'm the handsome one of the pair on my "Repulsis".

Cheers guys, and isn't it great to see so much humour and wit on models and thanks to those Clubs that also included a junior section with the juniors present to expound on their builds too.

See you out on the circuit, Sandown next for me, aye, Kimosubby.

Five members went up on the Sunday and once again it was well worth the effort.

The various club stands were all to a very high standard, those Manx boys take some beating though!
The food was as always excellent, plus more than enough traders to keep people happy and they were more than eager to help us part with our cash.
My highlights from the traders were the Truckable Tug from SHG Marine, I dont even like these, but at £69.99 could well be tempted to buy one as a rescue boat/camera platform. The Mountfleet Chariot Human Torpedo, which looks like a winner, thanks to the time and effort put in to the two diver figures, which were of a very high standard. Finally an interesting time was had chatting to Speedline Models about potential new 'green' releases, and their USS Chocktaw Union River Gunboat, one of my all time favourites.
One little gripe...the nice lady singing those Forties favourites, excellent, enjoyable and so on..but could we have the PA volume turned down just a bit. Very difficult to talk shop with the traders around the pond. A similar problem was posed by the hovercraft, however there aint no volume control on them!
Still my favourite show of the year, well done to all concerned :-))

Like all the way, please. A predictable choice of mawkish old songs, sung mostly 1/4 of a tone flat and with a nerve-jangling vibrato. No doubt entertaining for the terminally nostalgic and tone-deaf but why did we all have to suffer? I hope she was paid at 1940's musician's union rates...........with 1940 pound notes.  >>:-(

Heaven forfend! Two twenty minute sets was enough. As much as time flies when you're having fun, the opposite is equally true. One chap standing nearby remarked that the last time he'd heard a sound like that was when he was standing outside an abattoir........ Harsh? Me??

And there have NEVER been bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover, unless they were being smuggled in by air. The Bluebird is a native American species, as were the geezers who wrote the song (ironically named Burton and Kent - how English!!).

As for little Miss Jones, what an absolutely lovely kid. Dave and Kelly should be rightly proud.

Well...

Its taken a few days to recover but what a brilliant long weekend! :-))

Met up with a lot of friends:

Martin (well he looked a bit like Martin!)
Steamboat Phil
Stavros
Mrs Stav (and Catherine)
Klunk
Captain Povey
Steve Dean
Shakey
Marmoi
The Long Build
Victorian
Chuffy
Bill D203

and of course met up with the traders too

Ron Dean
Dave Metcalf
Adrian Gosling
Dave Milburn (Inertia)
Andy Griggs
MACS Mouldings

and many many more.

In-between playing the game with Klunk when Phil's back turned, it was a brilliant three days of non stop talking, I think the only time I stopped was when I was planting the 'items' on Phil's stand. Bet you wont find those tins of beans until the Mayhem weekend Phil! {-)
Thanks to Steve Dean for allowing me to join in the Speciality Slot once again and to the organisers/clubs/traders for another brilliant year. :-))
Planning for next year already- you better have a lookout next year Phil! :}

Invitation to all Mayhemers ………. there is a concert Sunday evening at Dave's (Inertia) house. We are using the big PA rig ….. 50Kw turned up to volume 13 and it will feature a lady singer with a full mawkish list of songs. Afterwards we'll go down the pub and pour beer down him until he smiles.

Good to see ya Dave and sooooooo pleased you enjoyed the entertainment. Remember my Alien loves ya !!!!

Steve (sorry I can't hear you) …… Poolmaster.

It's at the Exhibition Centre which is next to the roundabout in the lower RH corner of this map. For a larger scale view look for Leamington Spa, which is the nearest town and just off the map to the left. Coventry is about 11 miles directly North.
Unlike Dortmund it's exclusively model boats. The problem in recommending it as the Top Show is that very few of us have ever been to such shows outside the UK. I would say that it's probably the biggest and best purely model boat show in the UK calendar. Incidentally, there are full facilities (access, toilets etc) for disabled folk and there's usually a happy gathering of the jugglers, clowns and comic singers who populate the threads of this forum..................not to mention the pie and cake guzzlers.  O0

That is brilliant! so its near Lemington spa.? {:-{ How would someone who does not drive get there and are their B&B close by.I took a look at the links you kindly gave me and could see some useful advice, but first hand advice is worth a lot.

Since they removed all the nearest ferry links to UK, I will maybe have to fly but will have to get clerance to do this?and I suspect the show will be in November 2015 is this correct?

I don\t suppose their are any comparable shows earlier in the year!? and an all boat show is perfect for me.

many thanks Steve :}

As far as I'm aware there are only a few traders. Personally I think more should be invited
And there are clubs from all over the uk attending
No beer tent as such. It's more of a case of bring your own along with your tent / caravan  and sit around a camp fire and BBQ with like minded modellers and drink till you pass out and in my case crawl out of my tent Sunday afternoon ha ha
