FRIDAY 7th – SUNDAY 9th NOVEMBER 2014
WARWICKSHIRE EXHIBITION CENTRE
The International Model Boat Show is returning to the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre from 7th – 9th November 2014 and visitors are guaranteed a packed hall with well over 600 models on the club and society displays, plus attendance by over 20 leading specialist suppliers.
The venue has been extended since the 2013 event, so there is now the space for each club to display more of their members work and also welcome new clubs and exhibitors this year.
To date nearly 30 clubs and societies are confirmed as attending this unique exhibition with some of the finest marine models on show.
At the show there will be a number of celebrations;
50th Anniversary of the Land Speed Record
The Bluebird Supports Club will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the successful Land Speed Record attempt at 403.1 mph. 50 years ago Donald Campbell broke both the land speed and water speed records in Australia. Work is continuing on the Conistone Bluebird, and it will be back in the water by 2017 to mark the 50 year anniversary of the sad death of Donald Campbell. The vessel will eventually reside at Coniston’s Ruskin Museum.
190 years of the RNLI
The Lifeboat Enthusiasts Society will be celebrating this milestone on their stand. The RNLI has saved more than 140,000 lives since its foundation in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck. The name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 1854, and cork lifejackets were first issued to crew members in the same year.
The 20th century saw the RNLI continue to save lives at sea through two world wars. Lifeboats moved from sail and oar power to petrol and diesel, and the first women joined their crews. Recent years have seen a significant expansion of the service, with the introduction of RNLI lifeguards and the first lifeboat station on an inland waterway, both in 2001.
120th The Manchester Ship Canal officially opened 1st January 1894.
The formal opening of the Canal was conducted by Queen Victoria in May 1894, but before this royal visit an earlier opening had taken place that year on New Years' Day which was just as well celebrated. There will be a display of the uniforms, plans and a model of the Steam Tug “Kerne.”.
The Surface Warship Association will again lead a poignant sailing tribute at the poolside during the 2 minutes silence on Remembrance Day. There will also be songs from the 1940 wartime era poolside throughout the day also. For younger visitors there will be ‘children’s hour’ at the poolside between 1pm and 2pm over the weekend.
Exhibition Manager, Avril Spence said “we are really looking forward to our boat show this year, last year was a very successful event enjoyed by thousands and with the larger venue and more clubs and special celebrations we are planning a really exciting show for our visitors”.
