Hi all I made a start on what is going to be a massive project in which HMS Warspite is involved in an air attack by the Germans.
I will be using Academy's 1/350 Warspite and several other scales of model aircraft also will be using led's for the explosions and lighting the water spurts from near misses with bombs.
I wont be getting the Warspite till my birthday in roughly a fortnight but have made a start on the base and some of the planes I will be using.
Here are some picks of where I am at, at the moment.

the smallest bombers are 1/350 scale kindly donated to this project the 1/144 stuka's are zevada
the 1/72 Stuka in the process of being built is Academy and I have a 1/72 Airfix FW190 to go on the Dio too.
as you can see it will be a long term project.

An interesting idea this - looking forward to more updates. O0

Hi all here is a little update on the Stuka
I have realised from the pic on the box I have bought the wrong version, the one I've bought is the anti tank one, which, apparently has no dive brakes and no bomb cradle.
I have tried to make the air brakes (I could only find one decent pic of them and that was on a model) I have no idea what they really look like so this is my best attempt at what I could seen. as for the bomb cradle would that have swung back up after dropping its payload as I obviously dont have a bomb so I want to do it as if its just got rid of it.
I have glued the windscreen on before it says so in the instructions as I got tired of rescuing them from the CM after breaking them off, seemingly every single time i picked it up, Hope that decision dosent end up biteing me in the bum

I like your idea of using perspective in your diorama. Poor old Warspite, still she put up with a lot and shrugged it off in two world wars so she wil shrug off all your bombers can throw at her! I look forward to seeing this piece completed and illuminated.
-
This is going to be good. I look forward to seeing more.
-
As much as I admire you guys who build these dioramas, I have a couple of questions: what the heck do you do with them when they are finished? You can't leave them out on display unless you have a huge house with a spare room the size of a village hall, so what do you do with them?
Rich

That's a good point and one I am at, at the moment I normally take the models off and use them for something else, luckily ihave an outhouse as well I have no idea where I will put thisvone when done, if it turns out ok maybe a museum will want it if not there's always the spares draw.

I love the ship, I love the class and I know that will be a gorgeous model when complete:O)
-
Just a query I have just thought her class must have changed on one of her many refits she could not have been a queen Elizabeth class when built as she wasn't on the throne then so what was her class before.
As for gorgeous when complete wait till you see my building skills be lucky if it still looks like a ship when I've finished with it you'll probably think it's a tank.
-
As far as I know no ship has ever moved class as the class name describes the name given to a group of ships designed together usually with parallel technologies*.
The origins of the class name escape me and I assume the name pays respect to Queen Elizabeth I who reigned at a time when the 'Navy Royal' achieved great acts of revenue and military value.
*Often modifications or experimental equipment were fitted to various ships in a class while under construction, or even at the design stage.
Examples of this are Turrets on HMS Hood of the Admiral class (the others had barbettes) and Differing types of electrically operated turrets on the Battlecruiser HMS Invincible as opposed to hydralic ones mounted on the other two of the class.
-
Hi kpnuts
Ian is right about the class name and it's reasons why the Queen Elizabeth's were called so. Sometimes it can get confusing because the navy have a habit of naming the same ship's classes repeatedly through history, the Queen Elizabeth class is one of them, as is King George V, and Dreadnought.
Warspite was an unusual battleship because she was the prototype for the total reconstruction scheme in the 1930s allowing her sister ships Queen Elizabeth and Valiant to be reconstructed in a similar but not identical way but they were still called Queen Elizabeth class even though Barham and Malaya were never reconstructed.
Good luck with your diorama it'll look brilliant when you've finished, just one thing being a aircraft nutter, your 1/350 scale bombers will need to be modified to become German aircraft as at the moment they are Japanese, not to difficult at this scale to do a little sanding or cutting. Hope you enjoy build Warspite the kit is a lovely build. :-))
-
Thanks for the info on the planes will see what I can do with them.
-
Well I don't know why this Stuka is still in one piece, I was doing the undercarriage and the canopy came off as did the rear guns(I stuck the canopy on to stop that happening ) so after half an hour wrestling with CM I won and glued the guns back on put it on the bench for the glue to set went to pick up the FW190 snagged the Ju87 with my sleeve it fell on the floor upside down, guess what came off, so 20 mins later wrestled them from the clutches of the CM went to glue them back on an ping off they went just found them after over an hour chucked them and the model back in the box. That's me done for tonight @@!!.
-
Fate is playing naughty games with you mate. Don't bother with the guns as they were for killing T34 tanks! Just stick a large anti shipping bomb underneath it.
-
Well here is a progress report of todays work the guns are back on the Ju87 and have done a bit more work on that and the FW190.

hi all here is quite a big update, I have tried my first attempt at panel lines and weathering of a plane, also I have been experimenting with the explosion on the Fw 190 wing

the explosion is a bit too orange so will have to either add some brown or blue to it then a bit more black to the smoke, still got to add the suspension strutt and the cover thingy that goes over the wheel will have to buckle that a bit and bend the suspension strutt but I think the explosion should work ok.
-
It looks bloody excellent to me! Do not worry about the colour too much as an explosion will go through the colour range from white to red as the initial hot explosion cools down. Also you are creating a snap shot in time. So, you have caught the explosion as it has turned yellow-orange, the wing is propelled away from its parent part prior to the aircraft tipping damaged wingwards and falling out of the sky.
This dio will be like a still from a film!!S
-
Wow I was going to ask what the LED in the Focke Wolfe 190 was for- most effective- keep up the good work :-))
-
Agree leave the orange tint it looks fine :-))
-
Was my post modified as I do not recall writing 'Blnking'! I wrote it later in the evening so maybe I did a little swear and did not notice. If I did then I apologise.
-
Well its not my birthday till Sunday but I am busy most of the day tomorrow and we have the whole family round Sunday, so I've negotiated a start today on my Warspite model so here is the start.
I have placed a few planes and Warspite in different places which do you think looks best (obviously the planes will be in the air on the finished dio) I just want an idea of which you all think looks best.

Hi all made a really stupid total nitwit mistake in my eagerness to start this kit. There are parts on the deck you are supposed to cut off before you attatch the wooden decking, which I didn't. That made the job of removing it now a real b@'!:er, still done it now I've bitten the bullet and done a tiny amount of PE (the gangway which goes across the bow there are 2 gussets underneath which measure 2.5mm x 1.5 mm after an hour of getting them in the right place and upright I have to wonder is it worth the effort, once it's on the dio no one will see it, even off the ship when turned upside down you can barely see it with the naked eye. Still we will see how long I keep the PE up as although they are small the gangway was a simple bend the sides up (oh by the way the Mk1 detail up set instructions are vague to say the least) they show a picture of the part in place and one pic of some of the folds you are left to guess the rest of the folds.
-
Hi all here is a bit of an update of where I am now.
I am a bit peeved now, I realise I made the mistake with not removing the plastic before I laid the decking but now i've started putting the PE on I've discovered ther are other bit which should be removed which are not on the instructions and now i've laid the wooden decking and cut it to fit whats on the deck the PE is not covering all the plastic.

as you can see from the pic the only part outlined is the gangway which is to be removed but as i've now discovered the ramps should have been removed too.
as you can see the PE ramps are too short and I can't remove the plastic ramps as I've cut the decking to fit, so I'm hoping that when painted grey it wont notice. (yes I know the middle blast shield is crooked in the pic but that has been sorted now)
led in place ready for the only direct hit on the poor old lady.
I know I swore I would never use PE again but this is all fairly simple stick it on stuff at the moment so will stick with it for now.

first start at the explosion and I thought I would try an experiment with Optic Fibres will bee using those for the tracer rounds Warspie will be firing, I have discovered if you scratch the firbre every so often light escapes at the scratches over a length of about 12 inches (it does gradually get less as it goes along but I think 12 inches will be enough for me) anyway keeping it straight at anything more than that is almost impossible

Obviously there is no smoke yet nor any debris in the explosion , I am wondering whether to put an unfortunate sailor in the smoke of the exlposion sans a limb or 2 ( the 350 scale sailors I've got I'm not sure it would notice, but might be fun to see if anyone does).

Hi all I think I've got too many balls in the air at once, at the moment so I am going to finish some of the planes before I get too involved with Warspite, so got on with the FW 190 and apart from painting the canopy and matt coating it I am calling the 190 done.

Hi all here is an update, and a querey I have used humbrol matt varnish for the first time, But I have an unusual effect the varnish has white patches (which in this instance is great I was going to add something like this anyway, and think it works ok) but what if I didn't want it, whats gone wrong ( I stirred it thourgherly)

doing some work on the base today
as you can see not a lot of room in my man cave for it
(http://i.imgur.com/TOUqE9c.jpg)
drilled the holes for all the leds and put and wired the leds into the board
(http://i.imgur.com/7WAOxc2.jpg)
not wired the explosion in the stern of warspite cant do that till Warspite hull is permanently atattched same for the FW 190
the 2 blue leds are for the water plumes for the near misses.
-
Hi all been doing some experimenting with the base, my choice of using blue leds was a terrible mistake, now Ive gone and hot glued them all up to make the water plumes I am stuck with them (pun intended) hopefully loads of white paint will cure that problem, initially I was getting carried away and started making them too big, till it suddenly dawned on me an inch high plume of water at 1/350 scale would be 29 feet tall in real life so scaled them back a bit.

Those explosios are very impressive though I know what you mean about the blue, it might be a bit bright. The flashes I have seen from electrical discharge under water look very white so you are right IMHO to modify them. That ship is going to be gorgeous, the shape is just so satisfyingly good. All battleships should have been that shape:O)

It looks fine to me, I'm no expert in weathering but in my opinion less is more, I think too much a can make it look like a derelict, the explosions are nicely done. :-))
-
Warships are like an organism in huge form in that when possible repairs and maintenance will be conducted so painting and other chores wil still go on unless the enemy make an appearance or the weather is poor. That said, in the thread on HMS Kent in the R&D room it is mentioned that a captain tried to get his crew to paint the ship while it was busy shelling Turkish forts in the Dardanelles!
Fresh rust will be brighter, have a look at these films on You tube as they might help. Any expensive materials can be substituted for paints you already have or can get easily:O)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUWVwlVwrdA
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj2fpQwG37s
Google rust wethering techniques and you will find more info, and look at images of Canberra and other warships involved in the Falklands war as these will give you some graphic references of how to make your Battle barge war weary.
Keep up the good work, it is starting to look peachy. The water effect is pretty effective.

Hi all just a quick question, re the aircraft guns at 1/350 would the damage they do to the deck of the Warspite be noticeable, if so how much damage would they do (I assume apart from removing a bit of paint they wouldn't do any damage to the superstructure) if the damage did show, on a run along the deck of the ship how far apart would the hits be.
-
In 1/350 scale the bullet strikes would be the size of pin-pricks so you perhaps would even see the paint being scratched in this scale. On the real aircraft the guns would be no further than 10ft apart maximum so in scale form in would tiny and once again probably not noticeable unless it was a really concentrated fire in to one precise place on the deck or superstructure. I think you would struggle to achieve a scale effect with out it being over size. I personally would stick to the bombs blasts, they look stunning by the way, I think you are doing a brilliant job. :-))
-
Thanks nick that is pretty much what I thought but it's nice to have it confirmed.
-
You have the complication of mixed ammunition load as well because, while rifle diameter rounds would not show in this scale, cannon rounds would have a mix of tracer solid and HE so not every hit would splinter deck timber.
You are right not to worry about anything less than the explosions which you are already making.
-
Hi all playing with the 1/350 planes this one I was going to have crash into the sea behind Warspite but I had a thought didn't some of the German pilots do suicide runs and deliberately crash their crippled planes into ships. If I did this I was thinking they would aim for most damage so I would imagine they would try for the bridge or one of the big guns and hope to hit some ammo.If I did this would something like that have been enough to sink a ship like the Warspite. Obviously I dont want her sunk.(http://i.imgur.com/TncO0F8.jpg)

-
I think the colour is alright, maybe some more waves on the open sea, but that depends on your feelings towards contrast between bow waves and how choppy you want your meditteranean!
-
Hi all well all the lighting is now set up and I have installed most of the guns.

Was that the ghost of a previous resident or your other half in the top photo! I thought that digital imagery did away with double exposures.
Your dio is coming together fast now!!!
-
It's a ghost. Ooooooo. No it's just my ancient canon D10 I don't think they had things like image stabilizing in the stone age.

...and did you notice that the "ghost" was reaching for the "spirit" {-)
Diorama coming together nicely KP. :-))

while gabbing on the phone!!!! lol
Warspite did have a remote controlled bomb hit her from a griffen according to Airfix's blurb, and as it is a while since I read the anatomy of a ship book I don't remember what other hits were done, she did spend twice in the states being refitted and there is a picture of her limping into malta.

Hi KP,
The background certainly helps in that it gives another perspective to draw the eye (that's the only way I can put it).
When you settle on the final background, perhaps other objects, shown at a distance, will give the whole diorama even more depth.
Artists / photographers would probably be more able to explain this %%
Regards,
Ray.

The sharp bend in the background show clearly in the first and second photos. Could you install it with a curve rather than a bend?
Tom
-
The edge of the base surround does show, but you have got the essence of the idea and suggest modifying the backdrop so the bottom edge is the same shades of blue as the base sea to ease the transition from base to backdrop.
A curve will definitly improve your initial work.

Well she's nearly done now just some rails and the rigging (no idea where that goes) I can see some of it in the box atr but obviously that does not show where its anchored or anything.
got a bit of work to do on the base and the background, but definitly on the finishing stretch.

How long is that kit? She looks a good size given she reaches almost across the table!
-
27 1/4 inches whatever that is in the new fangled stuff they use so much these days
-
692ish millimeters long. That is pretty impressive and makes me realise how big that diorama is!
-
Hi all this is where I am now still a lot of little things to add so probably wont be posting any more on this for a while as the bits I need to do wont really show up much and would just be boreing, but dont worry I will still be working on it.
Will have to find someone to donate it to then as its is too big to stay here. oh and sorry I lied (cant read my own writing its 21 1/4 inches long.

I put the warspite on her just to show how big she is.
I will be a good boy though no starting it till I've finished the warspite dio, well fairly sure I will be a good boy, sort of.
-
It is difficult to stay on one project especially if the going gets tough for some reason.
I find projects as large as ship modelling can have bottle necks where you are waiting for some parts and cannot continue until they are sourced, or you lack reference or even a mistake causes your enthusiasm to plummet. It does not hurt to have a fall back project (or three:O)
-
Well here is where I am now sorry in advance not turned out anywhere near as good as I hoped have ruined the rigging and some of the paint work, doing some more to the dio then the whole thing will be done I feel I have to finnish the base as I promised myself I wouldn't start anything else till this was finished.. dont think I will be donating it to the library though and definitely not to the next club show table I think it is now ruined and fit for the spares drawer

It would be such a shame to bin it KP <:(
Just put the ship to one side for a little while then re-do the rigging when you feel up to it.
...oh, and move the white ensign. It would be flown from the ensign staff down aft when in harbour, along with the Union Jack up for'd., but as you are depicting her at sea, the Battle Ensign (still a white ensign) would be flown from the rear of the foremast O0
Regards,
Ray.

Well its finished, managed to sort the rigging and hid the botched paint behind the gun blasts.
will take some better photos in the daylight tomorrow.

Excellent! Congratulations on an interesting build and study in perspective. The use of LEDs and electrickery is also a useful tutorial for the future.
Thanks for sharing your hobby with us KP.
-
Well done KP - glad you decided to carry on. If / when you put this effort on display, just attach a bit of blue material around the exposed edge of your base to finish it off :-))
Regards,
Ray.

Thanks for this very interesting thread KP. You have done an amazing job.
In my kit bashing days it was Airfix at 1:600 scale (1960's and 70's), and I did build Warspite. The detail on these modern 1:350 models is truely stunning. TBH I don't think my eyes are up to working at these scales anymore. :((

Amazing brilliant and inventive work, talk about bringing a subject to life!! :-))
