Hi all. I am building Tenby lifeboat based on a Speedline models kit. I purchased my kit in May 2012 and have been working through steadily. The kit has proven to be challenging to say the least! I have been model boating for some 35 years and have built a wide range of models. I am approximately 80% through the build and hope to have her sailing this coming summer. I will post some pictures when I work out how to resize my files!!! Alan.

looking beautiful.........keep at it Alan..........it's going to be a stunner. :-))
-
That's very neat. :-))
Are you panning on spraying it ? I was thinking of the brasswork installed that might be a hindrance.
cheers
ken
-
Hi Ken. You are right about the painting it would be a nightmare!! But at present nothing is fixed so it can be painted and then fixed in to place. The superstructure is almost ready for its colour coats.
Cheers Alan :-))
-
Thanks Neil. Who said building model boats was easy?? %%
-
Here are some more current pictures.
Alan.
-
That IS stunning!!! :-))
-
looking very nice :-))
-
Hi Alan......is that elaborate brass cross mast over the flying bridge your handy work :o...is so...a beautiful construction :-))... Derek
-
a beautiful construction :-))... Derek
it most certainly is.neil.
-
That is one to be really proud of Alan.A superb paint job so far as well!
Mick F
-
Hi Derek. It is all my own work. One of the most complex brass work parts of the build. %% Something like 20 hrs work. It sounds a lot but was worth it to get it something like.
Regards Alan.
-
Hi Alan,
No problem with the photos this end...... :-))

Here are a few more pics of ongoing work. Y boat is completed. Finished the detail work on flying bridge door.
Alan
-
I have formed deck light recesses in the front of the superstructure moulding.
Alan
-
Absolutely amazing attention to detail Alan
The door and hatch look real and the Y boat
looks like it's ready to go.
Ned

I have finished all I can think of to do prior to painting. Time for paint...... :-))
Alan :-)
-
Hi all.
I have made good progress with the painting this weekend. 3 coats vw brilliant orange. Applied decals finished with 3 coats of clear laquer.
Cheers Alan :-))
-
Hi all.
I have started adding some detailing parts to the superstructure the last couple of nights. Here are a couple of pictures :-))
Cheers Alan
-
Lovely build Alan, hope mine turns out half as nice
Mike :-)) :-))
-
I am building a scratch-built Tyne class lifeboat, but I look at yours, then at mine, and I feel like putting mine in the bin, (but of course I won`t), just have to live in awe of modellers like you. Well done! Pete
-
Thanks for your kind words guys. Model boat building has taught me many things... Patience being at the top of the list :-)) .
Kind regards. Alan
-
Looking really good , keep it up :-)) :-))
-
I have now fitted the steps and completed some other detailing this weekend. :-)
-
Lovely!! :-)) :-)) :-))
-
What a beautiful piece of work.
Well done Sir. :-))
ken
-
Haven't done much this week just finished the life rafts.
Alan :-))
-
Fantastic build Alan, looks great.
I'm hoping to order the Speedline 1/12th Severn sometime this side of the summer, Seeing these pictures makes me want to order it sooner! :-)
Craig.
-
Make sure if you do order the Severn you get sufficient dummy 14BA bolt heads with the kit to complete.
-
Alan I've been admiring the excellent paint work, what are you using and what method if you don't mind me asking??
Mike
-
Amazing job,really impressive.
-
Hi mike.
I have used halfords spray paints for most things and humbrol enamels for small detail areas. I aim to have the prime coats as good as I can manage and then apply the colour coats lightly. The hull for example was 3 primer coats making good any defects until I was happy with the finish. Next stage was mask off above the water line. The White was built up with 5 light coats. I removed the masking tape after 8 or so hours then left it for a week to harden. You end up with a raised area where the tape sat this I carefully blended out. Re mask below water line and then 5 coats of blue. De mask and after a week I wet and dried the whole hull and gloss laquerd (3 coats) Dust is the real enemy of a good finish so I always use tack cloths
Hope this helps Alan :-))
-
Forgot to say I always apply my lettering then laquer over. This helps blend them in I think.
Alan :-))
-
Hi Alan
Thanks for sharing that, is it the Halfords lacquer that you use? A few more weeks and I should be ready for the hull.
Cheers
Mike
-
Cracking piece of work! You must be justifiably proud.
-
Hi Mike
I have used Halfords laquer. I learnt a very hard lesson where I mixed brands. I ended up with a crazy paving finish!!! It took about 3 months to develop and a lot of work to put right >>:-(
Hope that helps.
Alan :-))
-
Hi Alan
It certainly does help.
Many Thanks
Mike
-
Hi Alan
Off to Halfords in the morning spend a wedge {:-{
I keep looking at your photos and cant make out whether its gloss on the deck (grey) or undercoat sprayed with lacquer ??
Cheers
Mike
-
Hi mike.
You are almost right about my deck!! Here are a few pics. I used Rustolium stone effect finish for a grip effect (mask where required) slightly flat then 2 Halfords primer followed by 3 halfords satin lacquer . No sanding between coats you lose the grippy effect. :-)) The deck colour varies Tenby's is quite light and prime was the best match I found.
Regards Alan.
-
:-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Mike
-
:-))
Another extraterrestrial, but which man he is to make it
-
Superb , love the finish to the deck. :-))
-
:-)...I think our dear friend GAZOU was trying to say...........
Un autre extraterrestre, mais quel homme il est pour le rendre :-))
:o makes a lot more sense in it's natural tongue........ {-) Derek
-
Merci' Derek
-
Merci DERECK %) {-)
-
That is an absolutely beautiful boat :-))
-
I have been struggling with the rear emergency escape hatch today. In the speedline kit you have an etched stainless hinge plate and a base plate. I decided to make a styrene secondary plate to match the full size. Small brass pins for the screw details. A bit of brass tube for the hinge.
Alan :-))
-
I have now made and added the six deck lights and added some detail parts. Just wipers and capstans to finish.
Alan :-))
-
Alan....I am not sure how to say this :embarrassed: ....but I think you may need to get one of those 500 ml hand held water pump packs ....fill it with sea water diluted down to the scale ratio of the model......& gently spray over the vessel.......
;) ...as GAZOU said........ Un autre extraterrestre, mais quel homme il est pour le rendre :-))
Derek
-
Hi Derek.
I have ordered a bottle of 1/12 sea water from Amazon ;) to test you're idea out lol.
Regards Alan ok2
-
I am working on the mast at the moment. To anyone that may be interested here are some pics of it under construction.
I made a shaped timber block to start profiled off the speedline drawing. The mast you will notice is angled forwards a few degrees but the radar platform and cross members are all level. Also the main mast has to be set perfectly plumb As any error will stand out a mile!! For the cross members half rounds were filed in to their ends to set over the main tubes. All was then mounted on the former and soldered up.
-
Once the main frame was together the sharp angled cuts were made and then dressed on my disc sander.
The etched hinge sections were then added.
-
It was then a case of adding the radar platform and main mast and its supports.
-
All my soldering on the Tamar has been completed with my trusty Aldis mini torch and the Carrs products shown in the picture. The solder is brilliant stuff!!
Primed and painted Halfords satin black. :-))
Alan
-
Alan that really is a truly beautiful piece of metal work - It deserves chroming instead of painting :-)
-
alan44 says......."The solder is brilliant stuff!"....we have discussed this before....the artisan is also doing a brilliant job! :-))...... Derek
-
Alan, your boat's looking fantastic, well done. I just wish I'd thought of using a jig for the mast on my Tamar; I used graph paper and a variety of squares which took ages to get the angles right!
Phil
-
Thanks Phil.
Am I right in thinking you are the chap building the Tamar with the on line blog? If so its looking good so far. Not sure my internal detailing will be up to that standard :-)
Alan.
-
Hi Alan,
Yup, it's my blog of the (Model Slipway) Tamar build. Thanks for your kind works; if your cabin detail ends up as good as your build so far, you've nothing to worry about!
Phil
-
I tend to work on many areas of my boats at the same time This week I have fitted the mob cranes . I have also been detailing the windscreen prior to final fix. The kit supplies 16 brass etchings/ Perspex parts. The bolt detail is recreated by drilling holes in the main outer frame. There is an etched mark at each bolt position. For the bolts I used brass pins I found in hobby craft.
Alan :-))
-
Just been through the whole thread, wow what a crazy build! Absolutely stunning work, keep at it!
All the best!
Hama
-
Thanks Hama.
All the best
Alan :-))
-
I have been busy of late and the boat has been a bit neglected. Sometimes you have to re build your enthusiasm... Anyway I have been finishing off the main aerials and mob cranes.
I have now hinged the transom door and am working on the trim tabs. The exhaust ports are a bit of a pain in that the backs are flat but the transom isn't..... The things you don't see until too late >>:-(
-
Hi Alan looking great what paint or coating have you used on your transom door hinges and bits.
Thanks Derek
-
Hi Derek
In answer to your question the hinges etc are not painted. I nickel plated them. It's a quite straight foreward thing to do. .... My wife thinks I am nuts though!!! %%
Regards Alan. :-))
-
Hi all I have made some good progress this weekend.
I have finished and fitted :-
Hooks and covers.
Safety lines.
Mast support assemblies.
Aerial support brackets.
Alan :-))
-
Hi Which nickle plating kit did you use?
many thanks Akers
-
I nickel plated them. It's a quite straight forward thing to do. ....
Yeah, come on Alan, don't leave us hanging like that!!!
Full process please<*<
-
Perhaps Alan used one of these?
http://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/new-category-1/ (http://www.caswelleurope.co.uk/new-category-1/)
-
Hi guys.
Nickel plating ... You do have to throw a bit of cash at it. I bought a kit from gaterosplating. Basically it's a bucket full of chemicals, a battery charger, some copper wire, a fish tank air blower(for agitating the chemicals when plating , plating annodes, distiller water. I am making a pair of Rams for the mast at the min. I intent to plate these and will put some pics on here.
So tonight I made the Rams from 4mm copper tube (no stock brass) soldered a sleeve inside the 4mm tube of 3mm tube to reduce the bore to 2mm. I made the upper part from 2mm rod with a sleeve soldered on. I the cross drilled for 1.5mm hinge pins. You may have gathered I do not intend to remote the main mast.
Alan :-))
-
I have plated the Rams today. Components to be plated need to be surgically clean and polished. They are then pickled in an acid solution to chemically clean them. The 1st picture shows the tank set up. The electrolyte is heated with a fish tank heater. The components are suspended in the solution with copper wire hung off the copper tube. The wiring diagram shows the circuit. It took 20 mins to plate the Rams as shown.
Alan :-))
-
I will add some hydraulic lines to finish them.
Alan :-))
-
Hi all
I have been working on completing the internals of the superstructure today. The entire seating Floor is removeable. I have seat belts to make up and the main control panel to fit. It's Nearly all painted black in there so I don't think much will be seen. When all seats are fitted to the base plate it simply fits in to the superstructure frame and I have made up some tabs to secure it. :-))
Regards Alan.
-
Windows are now glazed, dash board fitted ,and window wipers are done. So much work in a speedline kit but so much fun!!! :-))
Alan
-
You are doing an amazingly great job of it Alan, I have been following it very close. I have to agree the Speedline kit is first class all the way & now it looks like Adrian & Ann have really upped the service too, which is good as it does set a very high mark in Lifeboat kits. I have the kit too but because of ill health have not started on it. However I now have all the necessary information including the Disc & loads of photos sent to me by Adrian Clutterbuck & a few other people as well, plus the offer of more help when I need it. ( And need I will) I found the brass bolts made in Poland of high quality & cheap too. They also sell the nuts to fit & have very reasonable shipping costs. Cheers, Mick B.
-
truly magnificent work.............very envious of your skills...............jaw dropping stuff.
neil.

Hi mick.
After three years of on and off work my Tamar is nearly complete. I had no idea of how much time and commitment I would need to finish a model boat! It has and still is a most rewarding hobby. Speedline I feel have had some bad press in the past I personally have not had any reason for complaint. When you build a kit such as the Tamar the deeper you move in to the build the more you appreciate the work that Adrian and his associates have put in to the kit. I must admit that when I received my kit I was somewhat dissapointed! But if you consider build hours against pounds for the kit it is very reasonably priced. :-))
if I can offer any help with your build Mick just ask.
Kind regards Alan
-
Thanks for your very kind words Neil.
Alan. :-))
-
The bow almost completed.
Alan :-))
-
I have made some progress with the upper control panels this week. :-)) I need to find a miniature compass from somewhere. I had no dummy bolts for the engine covers with my kit. There are about 180 needed do any of you guys know of a supplier?
Alan.
-
Here's where they fit.
Alan :-))
-
Hi Alan
modellingtimbers.co.uk do working compass in your scale and brass bolts hope that helps
Regards Derek
-
Hi Derek thanks for that. I will give them a look :-))
Regards Alan.
-
Hi try these http://www.knupfer-grossbahn.de/ I used there bolts etc on my Mersey 1st class my be a bit on the pricey side but looking at your model shame to spoil it.
John
-
Thanks for the tip John.
Regards Alan :-))
-
Not much work done since my last post. I have managed to finish the deck covers and fix in place.
Alan :-))
-
Hi all. A bit more progress the last few nights. I have fitted the exhaust ports to the transom, final fixed all railing and stanchions........ Nearly there!!!!
Regards Alan :-))
-
The last few nights I Have completed all of the guard lines. I sent for some turnbuckles from RB model they were the smallest they do and also some shackles- also the smallest. I also made out of 15 amp fuse wire some connecting links. I have added a bit of detail to the fenders. I cut some 5mm brass tube in to 3 mm lengths.... What a pain in the.... Painted and fitted in place. A bit of rope work to finish. The lines are 1mm shearing elastic and there are some fishing bits also. I am quite pleased with how they have turned out. I have also wired up the radar and also completed nearly all of the mast detailing.
Tonight I have started the final motor / battery / rear door/ bow thruster installation.
Regards Alan
-
Hi Alan RB make every good bits and cheap too. You are making a first class job & a great thread as well. I am following you all the way, thanks for sharing. Mick B.
-
Hi Alan,
discovering the forum day by day, bit by bit.
Your Tamar is really amazing O0 :-))
all the details look perfect !!
scares me even more to start mine :embarrassed:
-
Thanks guys. Anything I can help you with with your builds just ask.
Regards Alan :-))
-
Totally superb build Alan :-)) :-)) Can't wait to see her on the water !!! Fantastic workmanship. Well done :-) Dan.
-
Hi Alan, ..... Superb!
Pardon my ignorance, what is this device?
-
Hi Alan WOW what a superb build how did I miss this one O0 O0
Right what is the servo in your last pic used for
Cheers
Dave
-
Thanks Dan. I hope to give her a sail this coming weekend.( she passed her bath test ok!!!)
In answer to your question Martin that is a fuel filling port. It needs a cap making to finish. :-))
The servo you can see Dave is the one that operates the transom door. I have put a short video on you tube. Search speedline Tamar rear door and you will find it. ;)
Regards Alan
-
Many thanks for posting your excellent build. I have thoroughly enjoyed following it.
-
Absolutely stunning build Alan, truly one of the most impressive models I've ever seen! I've been to Tenby a few times over the years, one of my favourite places in Wales, and always end up visiting the RNLI station.
-
Thanks for your kind words guys. I am hoping to have some on the water pics to post soon.
its been a long time coming!!
Alan :-))
-
Alan brought his Tenby lifeboat to Colwyn Bay this morning for it's first sea trials.
I will let him post the photos and videos, but the photos on here barely do justice to the actual model.
Incredible skill and patience has certainly paid off, it looks just beautiful underway.
Alan has joined our club today and that has destroyed any slim chance I had of winning the Mayor's Cup at our Regatta next Sunday <:(
-
ALAN
I would like to be a small mouse.
I would like to sit down on the shelf in front of you.
And watch working you silently.
And admire you ..............
-
Gazou says it perfectly :-)) :-))
An amazing build :-))
Kimmel,
If you haveto build to that standard to be allowed to join your club,
you will not have many members :o

Here are some pictures from today's launch!! I was made to feel very welcome at Colwyn Bays club water. Many thanks to everyone there today. Looking forward to next Sunday's regatta!!
I still have more work left to finish her- but I'm almost done.
Regards Alan :-))

Once the main frame was together the sharp angled cuts were made and then dressed on my disc sander.
The etched hinge sections were then added.
Hi Alan44..
What size of brass tubing did you use for the frame(s)
Declan
-
Hi Declan.
which frames do you mean ?

Sorry Alan
Meant the mast and the stern rails :embarrassed:
Declan

A few tweeks and then back in to the test tank!!
Alan :-))
-
Where did you find a paddling pool big enough to fit a 1:1 scale lifeboat in?! :}
Seriously mate, it looks real!
-
Hi Declan.
To answer your question:-
Main mast 6mm and 4mm brass tube
Main stern rail is 13 mm dia. Resin moulding supplied with kit (top class moulding)
All railings to the stern 3 mm brass rod
Handrails to superstructure 2 mm brass rod.
Bows railing 3mm brass rod.
Regards Alan :-))

I managed to get her up to speed this week. Really pleased with the performance!!
Regards Alan :-))
-
The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed I haven't put the top mast array in place! I have it loose because I keep catching it >>:-( it was the excitement of getting her on the water!! Lol
Alan :-))
-
She looks brilliant on the water Alan ....those last two images are so lifelike :-))
One point I had never considered is when on the plane, the bow thruster is above the water level
On the real vessel is there an interlock that prevents the thruster from running in air?.........or would it be subject to some thermal over speed scenario?
Without re-reading the Master Class rules.........this model detail as built is certainly up there with them
I suggest you must be a very proud builder...... Derek
-
A great model and a joy to watch your build, thanks for sharing.
Mike
-
One more pic.
:-))
-
It looks wonderful Alan,
just great on the water, like the real thing :-)) :-)
-
Hi Alan
What colour did you use for the stern rail and railings ? looking really good great job .
Regards Derek
-
Hi Derek.
Sorry for the delay with my reply. Holiday time !!
I used Halfords Ford polar grey.
Kind regards
Alan :-))
-
Alan, What a great build, can you advise what you used to make the wire between the stanchions and what you used for the terminations to connect to the stanchions.
regards Gerard.
-
Thanks Alan for you info much appreciated .
Regards Derek
-
Hi Gerard
To answer your question .
The lines are 1mm shearing elastic.
I sourced some turnbuckles from RB Model. They were the smallest they make. ( in Poland I think)
I made up some connecting loops from 15 amp fuse wire.
I also used some fishing links cut down.
I discarded one end of the turnbuckle and cyanoed the elastic in to the hole.
Hope that is of some help :-))
Regards Alan
-
Thanks for the info, will have a look at the turnbuckles ect, have used sheering elastic for my rails but found it stretched after a while, may be I stretched it too much. Regards Gerard.
-
With reference to the handrail wire I used normal Black Electrical wire stripped the end and cyanoed the wire into the hole of the turnbuckle. I done this on the Mersey I built it is strong and does not sag. Mersey pictures are on hear.
Cheers John
-
Hi John, thanks for your input, I used this for the support wires along the side of the cabin, but had a problem getting it tight without any slight bends, have you got a tip to get it looking taught. Regards Gerard.
-
Alan what size bolts did you use to fix the stanchions to the deck rails and where acquired, regards Gerard .
-
Hi Gerard have you no adjustment on the fittings if not pull the wire through your fingers a couple of times to get any kinks out and the fix to fitting. I made them slightly shorter so there was a very small amount of tension on the stanchion.
Cheers John
-
Hi Gerard.
I used 12ba brass bolts for fixing the stanchions. ( bolt heads to superstructure side).
Sourced them from BA bolts.
Regards Alan :-))
-
Hi Alan, thanks for giving me the info for your bolt supplier, what a good site, every thing you could ever want, regards Gerard.
-
Not much work done since my last post. I have managed to finish the deck covers and fix I .......
Alan where did you get the stainless hinges?
Thanks.
John.
-
Hi john. The hinges are actually brass. The supplied hinges were too big I felt. I sourced them from the Dolls house emporium. I radiused the corners then nickel plated them. I have just finished my tamar. Adrian from Speedline supplied me with Perspex bolt heads for the rear engine covers foc. I thought that was very kind of him.
Hope your builds going well.
Regards Alan
-
Thanks Alan, your boat is beautiful well done.
John.

Hello Alan.Did you spray the fender with laquer?
-
Hi John
The rubber fender does look a bit shiny in some of my pictures! But it isn't laquered. It needed some cleaning up after fitting. I found that Humbrol enamel thinners brought it up a treat!
Regards Alan.
-
Alan very grateful.
Thanks John.
-
Hi all.
I have made good progress with the painting this weekend. 3 coats vw brilliant orange. Applied decals finished with 3 coats of clear laquer.
Cheers Alan :-))

Hello again Alan.
Please can you tell me how you achieved your paint finish?Did you rub down with finishing paper between gloss and lacquer and spray over transfers.
Many thanks.

hi alan
superb tenby lifeboat musem standerd i would think
could you help with the following please where would you decide to put full bolt heads or pin heads as in the windscreen
1 what did you glue the delicate stainless steel parts down with
2 may i use your idea for the rear transom door
3 looked at your post of main mast , how did you get the servo to oparate the ram on the mast arrangment
4 speedline suggest in their insructions that the kick boards are fixed to deck with p38 or p40 filler not sure if this would be ok any suggestions would be welcome
thanks for your time ps went on holiday to the broads maneged to get a tour of the cromer boat ,you cold eat your dinner off of the engines
not bad for a boat which is seven years old ,also saw the new shannon at lowestoft
will order one in new year (kit that is ) real one wont fit in bedroom
thanks for your time

hi
can anyone help with following please
1 how does one decide where to use dummy bolt heads or pin heads as used by Alan on his super tamar
2 speedline suggest using p 38 /40 to fix kick boards to deck not sure any ideas
3 best way to paint the railings.
any help would be most welcome
thanks

-
Hi Howard.
Sorry for the delay with an answer to your questions.
I used pin heads as dummy bolts where 14 or16ba would look too big and out of scale.
Fixing the kick boards was achived with a thick super glue (mitre fix) it allows time for adjustment and will gap fill to a small degree.
I painted most of my Tamar with Halfords aerosol paints. All brass work was primed with an acid etch primer. Then 2 colour coats to finish.
Small stainless parts were fixed with the same glue applied with a cocktail stick.
The mast on my Tamar is fixed so I can not advise on that point.
I hope this is of some help to you Howard.
Alan :-))
-
hi alan
thanks for the info , super mast was there any reason why with such an ecellent build that the mast was not made to move ,thanks for posting the photos will be helpful during the build for referance
the power units for my tamar are two 850 kv brushless powerd by two 5000 ml am; lipo s and a 7,2 nicad for the bowthruster plus engine sound
should be quite quick
thanks for your reply

hi alan
ref last posting , mast
what i ment was there any particular reason the mast was not made to move electronicly
thanks
howard
-
Hi Howard.
No reason other than I couldnt see the benefit for the work involved, and the compromises that have to be made in the ram areas of the mast.
Alan.
-
Alan, I notice in one of your pictures that you seem to be using 5000mAh NI MH batteries x2 , what run time do you get from these batteries.
Gerard
-
Hello Alan.
You are keeping busy on this site!
Can you please tell me where you found the panel which fronts the wheelhouse moulding and runs either side of the bridge door and holds the steering wheels.
Many thanks.
John.
-
Hi Gerard.
I haven't timed my runs but I would guess that at high constant speed about twenty mins. Usual trundling about about an hour.
Alan
-
Hi Blakeney.
The part you want is a fibreglass moulding. This needs fitting and blending with the main superstructure.
Alan. :-))
-
Thanks Alan. Not here will need to chase Adrian.
-
Thanks for that, I am building a 1/16 tamar but going lipo, hoping for longer run times.
Gerard
-
hi alan
hope i havent been a pain by asking too many questions regarding your tenby build
could you possibly give me an answer regarding forming of the curves in the kick boards with your oak jig

please accept my apologies

hoi Alan ..
is it the nickel plating set that you used .. ??
https://www.gaterosplating.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=207
it looks more real than real .. !!!!! :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
hoi Alan ..
