May i present to you, the Trimaran Icebreaker!

Looks pretty neat to me ;)

Looks good.
I'm no marine engineer so I may be way off the mark but if it encountered tougher ice on one of the outriggers/pontoons(?) than the other could it not cause issues with making progress in a straight line and lead to a bit of a zig zag in it's route?
-
Wouldn't mind betting reading the blurb that BP have an interest in the development of this seeing that their renewing interest in Arctic Oil fields and judging by the type of massive submersible vessels that have used to transport rigs a wide channel is almost imperative.
-
I wonder if the trimaran configuration, with the outer hulls well aft of the main one, allows it to get the whole weight of the centre hull on the ice without tipping over, and once the ice is cracked it will shuffle out of the way of the sponsons as the ship moves forward.

How about this ice breaker with the props at the Bow!

Quite a few icebreakers had bow props to create suction/turbulence under the ice to help break it.

Found an even stranger looking one here...

Seems to be effective, Scroll back a couple of the photos to see the results.

Good find John. So it takes tourists through the drift ice, surely that's not it`s only purpose.
-
Aimee ; any video of the Baltika icebreaking at an angle ?
-
More of a timelapse build up than a show of the Baltika's capabilities.

You know I want to build a model of it, because it goes sideways...
:-)
-
Like that little Workboat, from the Icebreaker Baltika.
-
Thanks Aimee, agreed sideways is good. %) Great video, the pods must take a bit of abuse in really thick ice. Tug Hercules, that is a good looking wee boat, maybe what a Springer should have been
-
That would make a great little kit! :-)
