G/day,
A few photos showing the start of my next build.
Hull from Christian at MTB hulls very good.
I am building this boat in honour of Geoff Edmonds who was a wireless operator on boat 040.
He also operated on Whalebacks one boat being 144 Geoff is about to turn 95 this year.
I will attach a photo of Geoff with my Fairmile D mtb.

Graham
Why are you running two brushless motors in a fast planing hull from a lead-acid battery? It will require a lot of power just to push the battery along and there's no chance that a SLA battery will be able to supply anything like the current those two motors will need to run efficiently. It's a bit like asking a forty-stone bloke with one arm to act as fireman on the Mallard. Lead-acid batteries have their place in a displacement hull which requires a lot of ballast and a slow-revving, low-current motor.
LiPo's are the obvious choice for the Fairmile because they can supply very large currents, but there's no reason why you shouldn't use NiMH batteries if the thought of LiPo's bothers you. Capacities are now up to 5AH for Sub-C cells.
Fairmiles should be fast and furious - not plodding and ponderous!
Dave M
-
They weren't that fast.
Lucky to hit 27/28 knots at best with good engines and a clean hull.
-
Long range rescue and fast and furious doesn't equate.
On an ocean rescue in heavy seas 18 to 20 Knots would
have been the norm.
Ned
-
Fair enough, but that battery/motor combination looks more like a narrow boat to me. I've seen more Huntsman models trundling round like canal boats than I care to remember. You read it here.
DM
-
Test went well last Sunday more than enough speed at full throttle but I want some endurance as well.
I can install Lipo batts if required I use Lipos in my Dogboat in photo above.
Graham

A couple more shots of deck.

Nice Curves! :-)

There is something about boat modelling in wood. The colours and the way the ply curves, it is a lovely piece Graham:O)
-
Hi can anybody tell me which issue of Marine Modelling Magazine carried the article on Roy Skeates Fairmile D build.
I had the Mag and gave it away I am trying to get some detail of the bridge area on the later boats I understand that later boats moved controls from STB to Port.
LRRC 040 that I am building was ex MTB 744.

Wonderful work, I am loving this :-))
-
Hi
I am using 3639-1100kv motor with 37mm x 1.4 pitch prop on 5800mah 3S 40C Lipo battery.
I think with the two motors your scale speed will not be a problem.
These motors will run on 4S (14.8 volts) OK, I run one about 10 times in a deep vee with no water cooling.
It only got warm after 1/2 hour of hard run time.
Nice boat and with some one that served on one giving info about the little things that make it prefect.
-
MTB 718 had her controls on port;
-
'Ere, don't pull that lever love, it'll excite the engineer' :-)
-
G/day a bit more progress.

Loving this :-)) I am going to build one next. I need to get a hull first, and intend on using the battle craft fittings. I am not sure what boat it will be, I will have to do some research on the subject, not my usual thing these boats. Thank you for sharing. :-)) Regards. Phil
-
A great build, looking forward to seeing your work. That is a quality hull. This model will be very impressive in the water when she is complete.
-
Lovely progress. I like the ventilators, they add a victorian touch to the boat.
-
hello there Graham
I have a photocopy of the Marine Modelling article of the Fairmile D build. However, it is a very poor copy and every time I try to photocopy the copy it turns out with a black mass - I do though have Model Boats issue June 1976 in which John Pritchard has an article of the Royal Airforce Rescue Launch (the large Fairmile D one) and there are several drawings and a couple of photographs to go with the article. If you haven't got this article and would like it - can you forward me your email address? and I will scan it and send it to you.
Your model is looking good and look forward to progress report.

Thanks Martin at the moment I am okay for bridge photos.

May I suggest that once you are logged then left click the yellow logo in the address bar and drag it to your screen.
This will be clickable next time you want to come back and will record you as registered.

hi there
Now this is a senior moment on my behalf :-) whilst looking through old topics I came across the Fairmile B which I did a while ago. While going through the photographs I spotted the bandstands that I made for her and low and behold there is the drawing John Lambert specially supplied to me which I totally forgot about. The drawing for the bandstand is rolled up with me other drawings for the Fairmile B. Sorry fancy forgetting that.
If you still interested let me know. Have a look at this link and you will see part of the drawing.

Purely selfish mate %)
Seeing you build in 1/35 helps me with my part built 1/72 'D' which will finish up as MGB658.
Have you decided on a pennant number for your boat?
Kev
-
G/day Kevin my boat will be 040 as I indicated in my first post.
This is for Geoff my friend who was wireless operator on this boat and others.
Graham
-
Hi Graham,
Always nice to build something personal.
Just clicked the pennant number, I'm now assuming this was a Australian built and operated boat.
European boats started at 601

Very nicely done. I'll keep this in mind for when I get round to my Fairmile!
-
Proper model engineering that is!
-
Well done on the stanchions and the rest of the build as well. I will definitely use your drill jig idea when I need to make the stanchions for my "B".
I looked, but I can't seem to find if you mentioned what scale this build is.
Cheers
Tom
-
Looking at the figures in the second image on page one, I would say she is 1:48th or 1:35th/32nd. This is good for donor figures from the plastic manufacturers like Tamiya or Airfix that can be modified and re uniformed for naval service.
-
Thanks.
Tom

Hi scale is 1/24.

Beautiful job :-)) Bravo Graham :-)

The 3639-1100kv motors require 2S to 3S Lipo batteries about 5800mah.
2S =8140rpm.
3S =12210rpm.
We have one motor in a Spearfish deep vee and it's very quick(about 35mph), so, two in a sleek hull 25-28 knots will be one probable.
It looks like you are using Hobbyking car ESC's(60 amps ones work very well).
You require a program card to set them up, but, they are very easy.
Only 25% in reverse!!!
-
Cracking job your doing there Graham !

A bit more done scramble nets started navigation lights on bridge and mast rear stays assembled to boat plus anchors.
One scramble net attached.

Another scramble net to make and some life rings and will be almost finished.

The model just gets better all the time. She is becoming very sleek.

Final photo wireless operator and 040 meet again.
I mentioned Geoff in my early posts he was on 040 on his way to the east when war was declared over.
He was very pleased to see the model.

Hi Gra.
You have produced a superb miniature both on and off the water
I bet Geoff was well chuffed
I look forward to your next project, any ideas yet?
Kev

She looks right at home on the water, I particularly like the cooling water discharge it gives it that little bit extra, nice one Grayham :-))
-
It is so good to see her on the water and pleased for you that Geoff was impressed. Our veterans are getting fewer and fewer, and while Geoff missed the main events he would have appreciated what went before from old salts and also what was going on on the home front. Was 040 his first vessel?
-
Hi thanks for comments.
Geoff was based at Tenby ASR unit 48 during the war one of the other boats he served on was Whaleback 144.
Graham

Excellent build Graham :-)) :-))

Graham,
Nice result, :-)) :-)) :-))
-
And very nice too Graham, crew always add that finishing touch and give "life" to any model, it's a pity there aren't more suppliers of crew figures in various scales. :-)) :-))
-
Hi Graham
Thank you, and thank you for choosing one of my hulls.
I have to say it looks the best RC LRRC I have seen, the figures have brought it life.
Bravo Zulu :-))
-
Thank you Graham for the many weeks of entertainment you have given us.

Kevin not sure of my next build I have a 1/24 scale Schnellboote hull from Christian and plans for an early model and late model boat.
I have previously built an S38 type.
Graham

Now that's a grand sight, I'd love to see them both on the water together :-))
Schnellboot would be different...........
