There are couple of photos of a Robust class tug picking a tow of a Frigate
on here somewhere but searching won't reveal them.
I think Dodes may have posted them or Dieseldo.
They show how close the tug and vessel to be towed can come to pass the tow.

The photo was taken by a RN official photographer, it was in the days when the Navy carried out actual training exercises. It was a towex, where the tug comes in close under the bow and a messenger line is fired by either vessel, then the towing rig is heaved inboard and the tug then takes the weight. It was hanging in Rollickers officers mess and I purloined it when she was being stripped for sale as no one wanted it. An yes Bob, engineers where either down below or on the bridge to be educated!!!!!!

This is how close fishing boats get in all weathers when they're pair fishing so I've seen boats almost swap paint fishing in bad weather thats close lol

That's not close Davie, these are close! The cod wars of the early 70's that sounded the death knell of the fishing industry in Hull. The government of the day put 1000's of people out of work in Hull to appease the Icelandic government.

it wasn't to appease the Icelandic government at all Brian......it was to keep favour with the US government who had a NATO and early warning base on Iceland monitoring both Russia and her navy in the Arctic seas, and Iceland were threatening to kick them out if they didn't lean on the Brits and their fishing fleet to get out.

PS...you may not have read my older posting about our Abbott bestowing a Knighthood on a particular Prince [who has more of the same than days of the week]...so with you being an honorary OZ & all that :kiss: we thought an OZ Knighthood was appropriate in your dark hours of need ....... :-)).....Derek

It boils down to the same thing Neil... Iceland wanted us to stop fishing, our government of the time allowed that to happen no matter whether the pressure came direct or indirect via the USA. All the people of 'Ull and Grimsby cared about was that they were suddenly without work because of the Icelanders, politics never crossed their minds.

Remember joining RMAS Rollicker as a junior wet behind the ears second mate for an AGI watching job. We kept a little over a cable from it during daylight hours and closer when it was dark, it was a cat and mice job because you was always trying to keep your red light to his green, if he got red on you he would come straight at you. His big thing was if there were other fishing vessels around was to go straight at you get you following at a distance and get close to the FV, if he could he would slide off and leave you shadowing an irate British FV. Then daylight comes and the RAF is asked to get a Nimrod up to find him. But when I was on the smaller tugs a" running catch up" meant running upto and passing under the bow of the tow to be close enough so that a heaving line is dropped down onto the tow deck to secure the tow wire to be passed up.
