Just wanted to see how it compared to the heller la reale and I think it is deffo as good, once I've added the black it will be stunning.

Wow.  If you apply the same techniques that you used to superb effect of La Reale this is going to be a magnificent model.

Sorry to go all 'Yoot' here, but you are becoming the master of Bling ships! Your work on the Reale is excellent, so this should be amazing, given the height of the stern.

Hi all we have arrived safely in Egypt . Wow it is hot, the staff are friendly and it is clean (the Internet sucks though) so probably no pics, but it is really nice.

That is good to hear. Have a great time and don't climb on any of those pointy buildings. What are they called?

Hi all well back off hols and made a tentative start on this one

The kit comes with stubby half cannons for the lower decks( I may live to regret this but Ive decided to open up the gun ports and make some whole guns to put behind them, since they are below decks and you wont see much of them they wont need to be too detailed or accurate, and I am only doing one side as they would never do a broadside on both sides, I mean what admiral in his right mind would choose to take the risk of a broadside on both sides at the same time) also it means I've only got to make 30 guns and carriages. I also have to make part decks for one side.

If the ship is engaged on both sides simultaneously then the Captain might order it.

Looking good! Even in a simlified form, you are doing a lot of work to this model.

That's why he introduced the ships tax at a cost of 68,476 she was the most expensive ship of the time.

Title: Re: Airfix Royal Soveriegn
Post by: kpnuts on July 12, 2015, 03:25:45 pm

Hi all I've decided to do something different with this and it involves this
(http://i.imgur.com/ODULjiq.jpg)
It flickers just like a real candle and the other one is kaput so I developed a cunning plan so, off with the transom
(http://i.imgur.com/BYLcvyr.jpg)
can you guess where this is going
drilled out the windows
(http://i.imgur.com/EvG4esR.jpg)
then removed the rest of the window
yes thats right I'm going to RC it, only joking, lighting up the state cabins.
Title: Re: Airfix Royal Soveriegn
Post by: ballastanksian on July 12, 2015, 08:42:13 pm
It looked rude for a second until I recognised what it was! Are you going to illuminate the lantern as well? You can get flickering LEDS.
Title: Re: Airfix Royal Soveriegn

I think the lantern is beyond my level its tiny.

Title: Re: Airfix Royal Soveriegn

You can get battery powered 'tea lights', same effect just in a much smaller battery powered package. They're normally 4 for £1 in a  B&M or similar kind of shop. Wargamers build them into cotton wool balls to make burning markers. A couple of them strategically placed within the hull would do the job.
Title: Re: Airfix Royal Soveriegn
Post by: kpnuts on July 19, 2015, 07:50:17 pm

Hi all a small update on this, The transom sticks out past the gallaries on the sides and I didnt like the way Airfix just moulded them flat so I've rounded the edges and reguilded them
(http://i.imgur.com/sc4Ls6g.jpg)

also the grills on the prow are not moulded all the way through so I drilled all the holes out.

and I've hacked the candle apart and reconfigured it

I was going to give it a try also not sure whether  to add a bit of green to the bottoms of the waves, what do you think.

These are handy when you want to simulate fire at sea without the danger of naked flame. On our club illuminated evening last year, my Billings Osberg Longship was adorned for a Viking Funeral with the 'body' laid out surrounded by these lights and some coloured tissue and looked very effective. No use in broad daylight though!

Hi all well I know nothing about rigging so I'm going to do a cross between the Airfix instructions and ones I've downloaded off the internet (I could not possibly do them the way they are supposed to be, I don't have a clue as to where to start) I dont even know what the different lines are called.

also I bought this to do the ratlines with

but This came with the Airfix Wasa kit

which would be the easiest to use.
Title: Re: Airfix Royal Soveriegn
Post by: ballastanksian on August 19, 2015, 10:22:17 pm
I know there was Standing Rigging such as the Shrouds (They hold the masts up and have the ratlines tied to them) and then there is running rigging, which include all of the sheets etc used to raise, lower and adjust the sails etc.

The former can be depicted black-brown as they suffered the elements and were soaked in pitch, while the running rigging was a more natural colour-linen like as they were tugged about and often stowed away when not used. As to names etc, I am as fresh to it as you and it can change from era to era as sail and rigging evolved.

There are some good videos on Youtube showing the tying of ratlines and other rope types, also one of last year's Model Boats had a good article on folding sails, it is more involved than I imagined!

You are doing great with your rigging Ken, Do as much as you want, it is a challenge wether you do one knot or several hundred, so don't worry, it'll be a grand model.

Shame about the Armati tool, I have not had anything to do with one. Still, I suppose you could put it on Ebay and get some of your money back or offer it in the sales section here?

Airfix supplies the loom with the victory as well, also for the names of the riggin see dlancasts building a static 1765 English frigate and page 6 of the warships section for the man of war victory for some insight.

Hi mark its both I used mig brown-green camo wash on the gold leaf first to bring out the detail then fill in with Matt black, I should say I guild the whole panel each time ( I tried just doing the ornamentation but found it impossible to get rid of the little ragged loose bits of gold leaf on the edges).

Hi all as a note People keep asking me how I do these sails, well here is a short guide, they are so easy.
First you need the white spirit you clean your brushes in ( you know the jar or bottle or whatever that all the sludge builds up in( I keep mine topped up in a little bottle as I use it for other things too)

you  get your vac formed sails , your brush and your white spirit.

then you get a good brushfull of the sludge in the bottom of the bottle and scrub it all over the sail(both sides)

allow it to dry and give a second coat if required

then with a downwards motion wipe the muck off till you're happy with the effect

and there you are, see how easy it is.

I have cleaned up some of the formatting instructions left by your machine  !!!

Do you see these when you  'Preview'  your letters  ?  Can they be removed at source, do you think  ?

Cheers

I thought you were still cladding the vac form with tissue Ken, so I am extra impressed that the effect is done with dirty white spirit!

Thats genius that is.

That model would grace any room it was set up in - an excellent piece of work.  O0

....and it's good to see the flags being blown in the same direction as the sails.  :-))

Ray.

If I was a museum curator, I would have no qualms comissioning you for similarly excellent pieces Ken. Your customer must have liked it when he first saw it. so you have no worries there!

She looks realistically tired and windswept. She needs a few weeks in dock for some TLC and the sailors to get busy with their needles.

Thanks guys well my Rolf took delivery of it today and said it is totally amazing, said he knew it would be good as he had seen the way it was going, but that it was way better than he had expected, he recons it's the framing that finishes it off.

Superb job.  I am very impressed.  I hope the new custodian will construct a glass case for it before vulnerable protrusions gets damaged, and to keep the dust off.   :-))
