Title: Weathering my Atlantic tug has commenced...
Post by: U-33 on June 08, 2015, 02:06:38 pm
All the heavy weathering is done, now to tone it all down, add a few different colours here and there, and get the crew signed on.

The term ''as rough as a badger's ass'' springs to mind...but it will look a lot different when it's done.

Aah...the operative word is ''commenced''. I only put the rope and the exhausts on this morning, so there's a ways to go yet... ;D

For me old mucker Barry...getting there now. Still not finished, but it's getting grottier and gungier by the day. Got the scum line to do next...for that, I put the boat into the internal domestic model boat ballasting and trimming facility (having first made sure that the good lady is well out of range), placing the boat into just enough water to reach the water line, then gently sprinkling a good amount of well powered chalk of several different colours (mainly white/green and pale blue) onto the water surface, and leaving it to sit for an hour or so. The chalk will oblige by sticking to the hull in the right place....then ever so carefully lifting the boat out and leaving it to dry naturally. Once dried, a few light coats of varnish sprayed very gently over the chalk line....gently so as not to disturb the chalk too much, and a nice scum line appears. (It's not my idea, I nicked it from David Merriman)

Ah...yes...that can be a problem. Hence the need for making sure that the lady of the house is well out of range, and a large bottle of bath cleaner is close to hand.

Then there's the possibility of house points for cleaning the bath...

Looking good Rich....nice & grubby :-))....does she need a towing eye at the stern? ........to keep angular strain off the winch drum  :o........

It also appears that when the scale engineers commissioned the winch hydraulic system......a few gallons of oil was spilt & hasn't been cleaned up.....typical >>:-(

My knowledge of tugs is pretty limited, Derek...I just looked at a few pictures of other tugs, and just added 'stuff' where I thought 'stuff' would go. It's probably all wrong, but it looks ok to me...it won't win any concours d' elegance shows, but it wasn't done for that, it's just one of those 'chuck it in the car and go sailing' boats. It's all been altered internally as well, but it works fine.
