i need help choosing a build material for an rc warship , i have a card board mock up that i would like to add to I.E something like paper mache or fiberglass , are here any other materials i could/ should use instead?
also please excuse if this is in wrong place , this is my first time on the site :)

Personally I prefer using wood as base and adding fibreglass, that way you'll have a strong base inside the hull to keep it straight and undamaged.
If the model is really small (under say 60cm in length) you might get away with impregnated card board with fibreglass around it.
Should you really want to use the card board for the hull you can also add foam in between the frames, then apply some tape and then fibreglass.
When the fibreglass has cured you can remove the foam and the card board and you'll have a nice empty hull.
Greetings Josse

well the card board is just a mock up, im just looking for a material i can just sorta slap on and make a shell. like fiber glass so i can calculate my options...
also i take it card board dont hold up to fiber glassing then, so would builders grade expanding foam be good enough to hold it up from the inside?
-
A popular technique from "back in the day" was to use brown gummed paper strips. You can still get it from stationary shop (shops that sell stationary! not moving shops that have halted! :D) You wet it and paste it over the hull then you could probably give it a coat of GRP resin or model aeroplane Dope and varnish to waterproof it. Apparently it's pretty strong construction method. personally I'd go with a covering of glass fibre matting and resin.

Once you've coated you're cardboard hull you could give it good waxing and make a GRP mould from it. Then making a GRP hull is easy!

the plan i have at the moment is to get my cardboard hull ,fill it with foam and coat it in closure plate tape (ducttape that doesnt burn), then purchase a fibreglass kit and coat it, then once dry pull cardboard and tape structure out and be left with fibreglass hull...
does that sound like it would work and what not... as you can tell never build an rc boat hull before

Have a look at this! http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/archive/o_t__t_30929__start_0__index.html The guy used styro foam to build the hull then coated it with epoxy resin and mat. As long as you don't use any foam that would be attacked by polyester resin you'll be alright. Wall foam is Urethane based so would be ok. I'm told that if you give the cavity a light mist with water from a spray bottle, the foam works a lot better and you don't need to use as much.
-
actually i got a new plan , due to limitations of materials and tools (and impatience) im going to make the hull from some thin wood i have
thanks for all the help and replies though :}

Now you have decided, don't be tempted to use expanding builder`s foam. It can expand in an uncontrollable way and burst your hull. I use blue foam sheets from Sheffield Insulations, see phonebook for your local depot. It can be cut and sanded very easily, cover with brown wrapping paper soaked in waterproof wood glue, then paint or glass. A solid unsinkable hull, just cut out areas for radio, motor, batteries etc. Works for me %) Don't forget the photos O0

Which ship class or hull are you building?
Duane
-
duane , im hoping to try do a bismarck , but am probably going to just go my own way with the design
so far my new plan will probably make a more new york class than bismarck.http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f252/CanisD/Misc/MyStarshipFiles/NeverWeres/Texas_5in.jpg
i will also try to mount gas powered guns on it :P

Scale Shipyard does make a Bismark in 1/100 scale.

if i wanted to buy one id be on amazon not here lol
im more interested in building it than i am actually having a 100% accurate model
for example i have dabbled in matchstick boat making before

and generally im always making stuff as i find it fun :)
-
Gas powered guns ? Where are you ? Check the legality where you live.
-
arrow 5 im from england and by gas guns i mean slightly more than airsoft , not anything to powerful
-
If you are thinking about working guns, check out this site:
http://rcwarshipcombat.com (http://rcwarshipcombat.com)
They do exactly that, in fact they have battles, and sink each other. They probably have some good ideas on how to get the guns to work. In fact, you may even want to look at how they build hulls, just in case you wanted a class legal ship, should you ever decide to do battle.
Do a search on youtube as well, you can see them in action.

I`m not sure if they are legal in UK. I`d check first, you know "health and safety", "pollution" but more important insurance, 3rd party liability and all that sh... nonsense. <:(
-
Gas powered soft air BB guns are legal in the UK, so long as they are not BLACK. Any BB gun sold must be any colour other than BLACK.
You can get black ones but you need to be a member of a softair club that is UKARA affiliated and be able to prove it ok2
-
steveb66 don you find it odd that in uk black airsoft guns are illegal but black air rifles are not, neither are black crossbows and some of them have enough energy to take down a bear ... aint british law odd
also if you get a pen********************************************
Instructions for home constructions of weapons are not permitted

Of course airsoft is legal in the UK but you need a licence in Scotland for airguns. I don't know if remote control air weapons are permitted in the UK. Combat model ships are well established in other countries I don't see much about them in the UK, do they exist ?

arrow5 ad far as i can tell , 5 min internet search on the subject it appears there are no clubs running it in uk , seems the hobby hasn't spread here yet,
but i know of a model boat club near me with a lot of members ill see if they can get one of these battles or something going and maybe it will be big here like in australia :)
-
Ummm. Seems a bit nonsense to me. Barely scale ships sinking each other barely a metre or so apart. Stick 'em back up with tape? Where's the fun in that?
Andy
-
well maybe its not for you , but others may like it .
i dont see the fun in going to a skate park for example, but i know people who love skate parks :)
-
Well certainly not my cup of tea, but clearly others  love it..........Derek :o......

My point is that even if some people love it, is it permitted in the UK. There was an attempt some 10 or 12 years ago to get something going in the Arundel area but I haven't heard anything since. How is the construction of your battleship going Kyle , the blue foam route in post#6, will be un-sinkable if you get an oppo the shoot pellets at it.

A Google search this morning threw up this in .5 of a second ! It seems we covered this in 2011, started by Daemon, are you still with us Daemon ? I would be most interested to know if it took-off in the UK since that original discussion on Mayhem. Using FPV (first person view) now widely available and used by model fliers and quad-copters etc to see what a camera sees and to navigate/pilot as if you were in the aircraft would add a new facet such as ranging and aiming at the "enemy" ship. The thread is "Starting RC Naval Combat club in the UK" www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,34137.0.html If that isn't correct do a search here on Mayhem. Very interesting reading.
-
arrow5 , im still gathering materials for it and going through other ideas but my plan stays the same on how to build it :)
-
Yes i find it very odd, especially the gas powered pellet guns that look like Magnums and Berrettas and are black, yet airsoft which are limited in power by a great deal are illegal in black.
I used to work with a bloke who was from America and what is even worse the pellet guns are more expensive than the proper guns.
And crossbows wow, there are a serious piece of kit. You seen how far and accurate a 280lb draw crossbow is???
If i was building a warship and wanted to shoot a projectile i would try and get the working from a Heng Long tank, the gun i mean. Range is not to bad and it will only bruise at a distance. But saying that we used to use them at work and i displaced someone cornea. So not really recommended where people are.
-
steveb66 , i had a mate from texas who was a gunsmith and we calculated that 200lb crossbow firing an arrow (it was a specific crossbow hat fired arrows we got numbers from) actually has more muzzle energy than a .306 rifle , its absolutely insane i can just go buy one of them but not a black plastic toy lol
and a henglong tank turrets is a good idea but yeah can only use it if the people around have goggles :( .
i might make guns out of 15mm copper pipe and stuff them with flour and ash and then have a gas system to throw it out so it looks like cannon fire...
im kinda limited on materials and money so this is going to be a junkyard build for sure.

Keep an eye on Geoff's experiments with smoke generators in the topic titled Iron Duke in this page. His work may inspire your efforts with gun effects etc.
Also, he is building a top dollar model of said battleship and it is gorgeous:O)
TTFN, Ian.
-
i cant find iron duke on here could i have a link?
i dont think smoke generators that i could make would make the gunfire effect i want :(
but i do want one on my boat for the smoke stack :)
-
Probably to the goggles, but it depends where you use it. I think the Heng Long turrets are lower power than the pistols so you could be ok.
-
Look on Warships R&D and look for 'IRON DUKE 1914'. It should be no more than five to eight slots down the page.

i found it , i find it weird hes building an IRON duke out of wood haha , but other than that he is doing awesome my boat will never a masterpeice like that :(
-
Fair enough, but wait until you finish your tenth boat and you will be doing wonders I am sure:O)
