Hi All have sold my old John B,and started on the new one.
The Hull is the Elldergarth with bits cut of, i have had it for some time .
Now i have retired and now i can get on with it.
Some pictures so far.
-
I will be watching this build for tips. :-))
Len.
-
Looking good John.
John
-
Thanks John and LEN , made lots of bits now i have to put it together.
-
Some pictures inside the bridge, before i put the top on.
-
Very unique and nicely done. Can't wait to see it finished.
-
That's a great interior, and top of pilot house detail.
Is that all scratch, or did it come in a kit?

-
Thanks for you comments umi, and big cheese, yes its all my own design apart from the controls they are from Macs Mouldings .
Some more bits added today.
-
Done some more bits to the tug, plus made lots of fittings.
Top nearly done plus the bow section, motors Battery's and electrics going in bit tight with battery's.
-
She is coming along really nicely. The electroinics looks quite tidy, are those gyroscopes either side of the circuit board?
-
Thanks for comment, they are Micro Gyro controllers, Port Starboard and bow thrust.
-
Hey tugnut........those large [assumed as] automotive ventilation fan motors are very powerful, relatively low speed, high torque, near silent & low current drain :-))
I can understand Micro gyros being used to alter the trim of P & S stabiliser fins on a surface vessel...but did not see any reference to them in the thread
Did I miss something?........as you also mention a gyro for the bow thruster??................keep the great images coming...... Derek
-
Hi Derek, the speed controllers are from Mike in Scotland, they are called MICRO GYROS and are a very good unit.
regards John B
-
excellent build, i envy you for your skills ! hopefully 1 day I will be up to your standard.
brilliant !!
Stan.
-
Hi John,
Mike who supplied your Micro gyro esc,s does he sell them or was it just a purchase from the forum/ they look ideal for my build. Can you let me know and give me contact details please. Boats looking great by the way.
Cheers,
Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Thank you Stan,Hi Faz yes Mike sells them just put in .WWW Micro Jyros .co.
I have had trouble trying to contact him give it a go.
regards JOHN b
-
All done hope to get it on the lake tomorrow.
-
Is the superstructure a kit or scratchbuilt? Those windows and particularly the framing is spot on and looks superb. If they are scratchbuilt would you care to give a rundown of how you achieved it.
-
Yes, go on John.
Len.
-
Hi Brian 56, yes it is all scratch built apart from the hull.
I cut out the windows and then used strips of plastic to make the frames it took all day to do but worked out in the end.
thanks for comments,i did the same thing on my other tug.
-
looks very good john hope the launch go's well :-)) :-)) & hope to catch you at one of the show at the end of the month O0 regards ray
-
Cheers Ray, are you having fun over there.
regards John
-
Hi John,
She looks great on the water and the build is ? what can I say SUPERB comes to mind. You have given me lots of idea's for my Portgarth build as in not going by the MMM plans/sketches (that's a bit of scouse sarcasm relating to the accuracy, chokes laughing, of the plans). I really like the colour scheme and have a plan to finish my Norton cross in colours like your boat. Great work.
Cheers, Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Thanks Faz.
-
No worries John,
What adhesive did you use to fix on the rubber fenders/ I plan to fit some to both the Norton cross and my Portgarth when it gets started. Love the colour scheme.
Cheers,
Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Gorilla glue it works fine if you mask of where the rubber is going and go on to the fibreglass.
-
Tugnut I have took a real liking to this tug and would like to know where did you get the plans for the superstructure or was it just off the top of your head? Iam wanting to replicate the new Damen class svitzer tugs the London Kent and Deben
-
Hi Gavlar89 and thanks, she is based on the Svitzer London class tug i just worked of of pictures.
Regards John B
-
It's a beast of a tug! Hopefully I can make something close to it, fingers crossed!
-
Absolute beauty of a tug, looks great on the wet stuff too. :-))
-
Thanks all i have started another one made the hull fitted motors just tested it, another Damen tug i think
-
Brilliant! What size korts and props have you used? Guessing on an eldergarth hull again
-
Hi Gavlar89 its one i made last year, they are 70 m nozles running 24 v motors this one is 40 inch by 14 inch beam
-
Just a tiny tug then Ye haha! Spot on tho! Still got an asd to finish first fitting brushless motors to it then want to tackle a Damen tug
-
Don,t forget the pictures :-))
-
Al try my best to post, I started a new topic in the tug section showing the Mersey tugs and couldn't load any as it kept saying file was to big and no option to reduce it
-
Tugnut where did you get the wheelhouse control boxes from
-
Hi Gavlar89 the boxes i made but the controls and switch and screens are Maxmouldings with artistic licence ;)
-
Hi Gavlar89 its one i made last year, they are 70 m nozles running 24 v motors this one is 40 inch by 14 inch beam

I'll second that.....Brilliant. :-)) :-)) :-))

The new John B cuts a nice shape through the water John, they are a nice hull. I have a twin screw tug built on the smaller size hull which is built as the Sun Suffolk, cracking boat.
The new hull looks to be a beast, the only thing that I would say is that the placement of the wheelhouse on the John B looks every so slightly too far aft when you compare it to a Damen product. Where you have placed it on the new one whilst in build looks a bit too far aft also..................maybe try it an inch or so further forward to see if it gives a more balanced look?
Not trying to teach a master builder how to 'suck eggs' Sir but just an observation, hope you don't mind. :-)
Cheers.
Darren.
-
