Hi there, back with my latest build, we use to own this vessel between 1968 to 1976 ,she was originally built by a well known Fishing identity Reg Massey of Cabbage Tree creek Brisbane in 1956, the model is to the scale of 1:16 ( 3/4" to 1') = 34.5", tried to get her as close as i could going by the few photos i had of her, she is of 7mm ply frames and using 2mm lime wood for planking, the keel heel is of Merbau and the ribs are of 5 x 2 mm lime wood...
-
Look good! :-))
-
Thanks Martin, This set of photos attaching the sponsons (Tasmanian Oak), next few photos ribs, fillers and shelf installed then starting on the beams (also Tasmanian oak ) and the base for the motor pre fitted.
-
Wow!

Hi BB, I think you have graduated from good to Very Good, look forward to following the build thread.

These are classic boat building techniques in miniature. Lovely work. Looking forward to the rest of the build.

Hi there, thanks guys, these photos showing fitting and installing the Tasmanian Oak deck beams with the lift out deck area cut out.
After pre cutting the 2mm ply (first layer of deck) skimmed the underside layer off as i don't need that thickness as will have 5 x 1.5mm lime wood decking strip laid over the ply.....
-
WONDERFUL!!!! :-))
-
Hi there, start of the W-house ( dog box), and showing roughly where she will be fitted, ply for the raise deck ready to be glued on and in the process of glueing the ply down onto the main deck...
-
Another beautiful build on the way :-))
-
Hi there next group of photos...Laying the cover strip for the decking, I cut these down from pieces of Red cedar my Father had in the shed for well over 50 years, then laying the 5 x1.5mm lime wood strips with the black cardboard, for the black pitch affect on the raise deck area.
Then the Merbau section of heel in position before another layer of 2mm lime wood is glued to the base of the keel which will over lap the front section of the Merbau heel.....
-
Hi back again.......
Laying the decking on the lift out section of deck, bow quarter & side view of her before the first coat of Estapol on the deck, the ice box (sorting tray), then start of installing the stanchion posts ( same deal pegged into the deck's cover strip) and start of the bulwark planking.......
-
Beautiful work as always, Brian. The finished models look marvellous, but seeing the photos of how you do it is a real education for me.
Peter.

Hi there, thanks for that Peter ( but i doubt i could show you any thing new :-) ).
In these series of photos, Planking above the sponson begins and fitting a stealer plank, fitting the bulwarks side cover strip before the capping rail was attached, showing the bulwarks completed ( sorry about the distortion ,new camera with wide angle lens).
Showing some of the bits n pieces made for her, then starting to paint the inside bulwarks ( 1 coat of thinned down Estapol 1 coat of undercoat and 2 coats of gloss), then marking the water line.......
-
Beautiful... just beautiful...
-
Thanks Nivapilot, I forgot to mention, I did give her 2 coats of resin earlier inside the hull, but wasn't happy with it as it never completely hardened, so i put a couple of coats of the 2 pack Estapol ( that I used in the "Charissa"s hull) came up nice.
Painting the 1st coat of the royal blue gloss on the sponsons, then showing the finished w-house the scanned photo it is sitting on shows the original builder of the "Rambler" , Mr Reg Massey , one of his Sons built the next trawler to replace the "Rambler" , she was the "Tijuana" a 60 ft trawler, sadly she rolled over on her maiden voyage in Moreton Bay, Brisbane en route to the Gulf of Carpentaria in June 1968, Reg and 2 of his Son's lost their lives, it was a tragedy for this well known fishing family...
Showing the hull hanging up while her bottom dries( camera distorting the rake on her bow), then showing her with her go go gear installed.....
-
Next lot of photo's, The finished product and the "Rambler" beside her sister ship the "Wendy-J".....
-
A lovely pair of models. Well done.
-
Hi there, she had her float test in Old Shrimper's flume tank, 1st photo sitting with no extra ballast , we put 1 kg in the ballast box (just behind the front mast) and 1/2 kg at her stern (which wasn't needed).
-
Beauty, like all of your project :-)) .

-
G'day Brian,
:-)) :-)) O0 O0
Going by pic 0081b it looks like you have two on the go.
-
Hi guys i actually had 3 on the go %% , the other 2 are trawlers that were based at our home port of Brunswick heads in the 1970's, will put them up later when they are finished.
Took the model out to the local watering hole the other day, not what you would call a successful trouble free run ( well she didn't sink) I decided to put a smaller motor and reduction in this one (mistake) this model only weighs 3.4 kg, so instead of putting the MFA 919D 540 type 6:1 reduction, i put a MFA 950D 380 type 2.5:1 reduction spinning a 50mm prop, she ran okay for a couple of minutes then started to slow up then cut out, after a while (cooled down) she would run again then same deal , ( motor was to hot to touch) , so ripped it out and as you can see by the last photo re adjusting the motor base to take the other motor ( should have known better {:-{ )..........

It's a mass production shipyard Brian :}

Hi Peter, a headache ,won't be doing 3 or even 2 again at the same time ( you don't seem to get any where %% ).
