As it says above I need a replacement chuck key for my pillar drill.
One of those £50 Aldi jobs and had look on the their site for a replacement with no joy.
Is there a way of finding the right size. My hand drill key is miles too small
-
b&q have them in 3 different sizes. All you need to know is the size of the chuck, usually marked on the chuck body in mm.
-
Brian
That the problem all I've got on the drill chuck is 1< 16mm B16 HARVEST. I am sure that means the drill sizes. But I've measured the hole where the key goes into the chuck and its 8 mm.
I take it drill chucks are all standard sizes as there is a set of 4 universal chuck keys on Ebay.
-
Yes.....chuck keys are usually a standard size.
any universal set would have one to fit.
-
Seaspray.......the designation of B16 is the mount ........ie., the taper.......this has no reference to the chuck key pin size or the gear ratio... Derek

Cheers Lads
I go to B&Q to see if any are the right size maybe they have the spider universal set like on ebay.

ok2 Chuck keys like pairs of glasses you can never have too many,6 months ago I decided to have a complete clear out of the workshop and I found 7 chuck keys I never knew I had,so now I have 5 for the pillar drill and 4 for the chuck on the milling machine and lathe drill chuck,no doubt I will be down to one of each again even though I made a chuck key rack to all the different keys for the machines, old age makes you very forgetful and can't remember where you put the bl***y thing........Ray. ok2 ok2 ok2 ok2 ok2

I try to fasten my keys to the appropriate machine by a bit of string, but I've still managed to mislay the one for my drill today. One minute it's lying on the bench, now nowhere to be found. I think the borrowers have were about while I nipped off for a coffee.
-
Years ago when in engineering the boss made us braze the keys to a little chain and the bolt it the the handle of the drills. The pillar drills were on longer chains raw plugged to the walls. That helped a lot. but before this you just asked you mates who had the chuck keys. All good fun till they took them home and forgot to bring them back next day
-
all my drill ones are attached to the cord holder thing on the handle of the drill with a loop of string, long enough to reach the chuck, that way the two are never parted.

I have three different size chuck keys. They were all a little tired so I bought one universal set. Non of them fitted any of them!

Now there food for thought before I buy a universal set.
-
I have found the easiest way of replacing lost tools
is to buy an expensive replacement and as soon as
you place it on the workbench you notice the old one
under something else >>:-(

Now I see the logic of a keyless chuck but can you get them tighten up as much as a key chuck
-
nah - but you do get friction burns on any speed {-)

I am wondering, were these for old drills, as in pre-metric.
just a thought

Bet there is a load of old drills out there without keys. Just easy peasy to buy a new drill
-
I have a large and a small chuck on my Taig/Peatol lathe which is American and so presumably Imperial. The other is a modern pillar drill from Screwfix so should be metric. The key had three different size heads but wasn't labelled. I've give no thought to specific chuck key sizes. Perhaps I should've done. Google will know.

Isn't not possible to buy a new Jacobs chuck +key .
David
-
Take a look at the price of Jacobs gear. Must be made of platinum!
Jerry.

When I bought my drill set from B&Q a couple of years ago, the cordless has a keyless chuck and the heavier duty drill has an SD chuck, like a keyless but the bits have a slot for locking them in, to make it accept standard drill bits I have a separate chuck that has an SD connector and a chuck key for closing it up to the bits, I would assume you should be able to buy a replacement complete chuck with a key if need be, try cromwells if screwfix don't do a key.
-
Why not remove chuck...its only held in by friction on a morse taper...knock it out..take to bq and check...if no joy take to a model engineering show like Harrogate...you can buy chuck keys in there dozens for a couple of quid.
Simples...

Cheers lads
I'll take a punt and ordered a Jacobs K3B key it has the same pivot o.d. as the hole in the chuck 8mm or 5/16

Works a treat and is of good quality.
Job done.
