Title: Shallow Draft Fire Engine
Post by: jtbyte on October 04, 2015, 10:54:28 am
Built in the 1870's this light draft floating fire engine is a very nice platform for a model steam engine.  She was built by Edwards and Symes of London and was 33 feet by 8 feet with a depth of 3 feet.  The wheel was 4 foot 3 inches in diameter and 3 foot 3 inches wide.  At 60 revolutions per minutes she attained 5 miles per hour.  She was steered by two rudders connected by a bar over the paddle box and worked by a lever from the steering platform.  Very different from today's vessels of the same type.

If I hadn't recently built a sternwheeler, that would be my boat!  This would make a really nice model build!

I could not agree more, and unusual too.  These little steam vessels have a character all of their own.
