I am sure the NMM would have plans of at least one of the class? That will be an interesting build:O)
-
Yes, you are quite right and the NMM can supply plans for the SULTAN class and the TAMAI class. I have these drawings myself and they are pretty good. There are no hull lines for the SULTAN class but it’s not too difficult to draw these anyway for the purpose of a model. There are examples of other close vessels that can be used to form a set of lines. NMM drawings are: SULTAN Class – Vessel: MELLIK 1897 – Collection: THY/328/005. TANMAI Class – Vessel: TAMAI1884 – Collection: FFA/307/9. If you need further details let me know.

What is the Post box on the forward upper deck?

What is the Post box on the forward upper deck?
I'd hazard a guess that it's an armoured helm position.
-
Not a FWD steerage compartment ......but the armoured powder & projectile magazine just AFT of the gun mount....... :-)) .............Derek
-
No probably it's the armoured conning tower that most British river gunboats had as the battle position for the helmsman. Can't be a magazine as it sits directly above the engine, and there isn't a hoist either.
For further photos I recommend Paul Kemp's book British River Gunboats, full of photos, I think you have to find the black covered binding edition which includes the Melik.
-
The post box is a forward steering position and is shown on the drawings from the NMM. Its given as a conning tower.
-
Below the gun is a rifle proof tower with two internal hatches from below, there is also an entry fwd and starboard.
-
"Can't be a magazine as it sits directly above the engine"..... :o no that is the boiler...the engine is far AFT..... Derek.
-
The drawings don't give any ideal what it is. The plan shows what is given as a Dome, while the profile shows nothing at all. Whatever it is it's shown as being circular but thats about it. As you say it is directly above the boiler. Some sort of protection by the look of it.
-
Hi,
it is very interesting boat, indeed.. here is a Tamai picture
Greetings Tom
-
here is next german quarterwheeler from Nile (?)
Hull shape, simple frame construction made of sheet metal with a flat bottom and rounded chines, such as probably at the last picture.
Probable color scheme with help of Fotoshop.

That is quite a neat stern wheeler. That would make an interesting project.
-
Until today, I didn't know there was such a thing as a quarterwheeler. Interesting! - Tom
-
Thats a very nice model Tom, it would be nice to see a few of these on local lakes. Here is a couple more examples of quarter wheelers for those interested.
-
Apparently the double stern-wheel gave better steering qualities in these vessels. Vessels with only one stern-wheel often required two or three rudders to steer and even then not very well. This type of arrangement gave better results. Several were built and used on American rivers and the lakes.

In Africa that steering position must have been as hot as blazes.

Hi,
I have a RC model - quarter wheeler Lulonga, each wheel has an independent control (ESC + geared motor) up to 150 rpm.
I drive model only using Throttle (3 canal) and Ailerons through an external Vtail mixer .So I can control forward and backward moving (th) and steering to the left and right(ail) just with one stick.
More infos you can find at www.paddleducks.co.uk (http://www.paddleducks.co.uk),
plans for the model )can be downloaded at the same place too ))

in this case, but no comments on photos.my model does have a rudder, but compared to control the speed of motors is practically non-functional
Unfortunately, in this case, there are not plans for existing ship

You almost had a captive audience Tomas! Those children were very impressed by your ship. Welcome to the forum, it is good to see yet another part of the vast ship field being modelled and sailed.
-
thanks...
This model attracted me its unusual construction and especially his elevated bow ,suitable to overcome big waves over the bar in estuaries into the sea.
Very interesting steamer, quarterwheeler l´ Adjamé was published in french magazine Modele reduit de bateau (I think in 08/2015)
but... here I met another rarity .John Fitch first steamer.. rowboat..from times when paddlewheel for steamers wasn´t invented yet.

Well I learnt something new this morning. Thanks Tom.
I can see its negative points such as the frailty of the design for rough seas, but it would have been a spectacle if used on lakes.
-
There are a lot of paddler plans available in the download section of the Paddleducks website.

Interesting model Tamarack.
