After drawing a blank on the HMS Polyphemus, ive decided to build one of the "Ant Class" gunboats from the Metcalf hull.
Anyone built one ?
I have Paul Freshney's Model Boats articles on his original build.
Any info would be gratefully received.
-
Rob- I was not aware Metcalf (or anyone else for that matter made a"flat-iron" hull. Can't find it on their website. Any details? Scale? Tell me more!

try that link for full details. (me being a luddite, it might not work !)
be aware that the man himself is away on holiday for a couple of weeks.

Thanks Rob.
-
no worries Rick, I will let you know what it is like when it arrives.
-
Rob,
Came across a picture today - HMS Kite with a later gun and turret/shield. Maybe you have not seen it before, so here it is:
-
many thanks for that.............. always nice to try to build something different.
-
OK. Sorry for the crappy scan. If you want a better look at it, it appears in "The Royal Navy in Old Photographs" by Wilfrid Pym Trotter (Dent, 1975, ISBN 0460043120)

Hi RickF
Can you tell me on what page it appears? I have a copy of this excellent book but did not realise it was in there.
Thanks

The pages in that book aren't numbered, but it's photo 79.

Thanks Anmo, I'll dig my copy out and have a look.

Rob,
I was wondering If you had ordered this kit and received it, and what are your impressions of the kit. I must say that i am interested in this kit. Also if you did get the kit would you happen to have taken any photos of what you receive. I appreciate any information you can give.
Thank You,
shaneH

not a full kit Shane; a hull, some fittings and some sheets (good sized) of plasticard.
Ive sent you a message , all in all pretty happy with it all for the money.
-
the above seems somewhat less than appealing !
what i meant to say is that the plan is very good, the hull is certainly one of the best ive come across, the fittings seem fine and im well pleased with it.
-
Rob,
? ? Thanks for your time and quick response. I must say that it's an appealing subject, one that I'm considering. Maybe you could drop us an update every so often on how the build is going.
Thanks,
shaneH

:o
Is the world ready for more of my inane drivelling ?
I did do a build write up a few years ago for MMI, but found the deadline a block on building enjoyment. (Denny Steam Gunboat, Fleetscale hull.)
but i will publish a series of pics/ ramblings for anyone interested.......... just no deadline.
-
OK as a start, ive just ordered a pair of 555 motors from MMD,and a pair of 50mm "pre dreadnaught" props from Prop Shop.
any feedback on the motors would be appreciated. I will probably end up running them on 9.6 volt Nicads, meybe 12v if needed.
-
The "pre Dreadnaught" props are superb from Prop Shop, and i have found a local source of 12v 3amp batteries (cheap and will fit in the shallow hull) or the would if i could get the shafts and supports to look symetrical (sp)
in the plated hull.............. they are straight/upright but look all wrong with the plating detail. I wonder if it will make a good ashtray whilst i build something else ?

i have just finnished a 1872 flatiron gunboat hms kite , metcalf hull of 33" long it came out good and useing two 5oo electic motors and smoke gen built into stack

May we see some photos, Pete? These boats are fascinating.
