I see Cap'n Povey like me has a hatch strength tester of the feline variety. Sam and Sophie have asked me if many other model boaters have pussy cats. NB all Mrs Slocum double emtendres baned from this thread, OK?

Hi Tobyker
I have a cat well its SWMBO's really, he is a red tabby called "Socks" he was called that when we got him from the rescue centre the markigns on his pws make it look like he is wearing socks. His favourite habits meowing, bringing mice in the house, dropping hair everywhere, sleeping, eating oh and some more meowing. Hei is pretty nosey when he is awake and has been locked in the shed a couple of times as I do not see him come in and hide under the bench, that is always my fault.
He has not sat on my boats yet I think he is to lazy to climb up to them.

Hi All
I have a ship building assistant a Tabby and my wife named him Galileo Tiger Rapter Aloysius Pudding, but we call him Gally for short. He runs the place as do all cats.
Regards David
-
YEP we have a moggie also the boss. relaxing on he's bench under he's umbrella
he also pops into my shed, hence all my painting is done else were. but no matter how far i go away
from him i manage to get one hair on my boat usually on the last coat of lacker. love him >:(
still after 15 years he is part of the family.

He gets his RTR next week. Fredy

There are at least two sides to every question.
I am an animal loverand like to encourage wild life. I have a nice big pond in my garden, with fish, frogs, newts and toads. The odd squirrel pops in now and again. We try to discourage the ducks from nesting here, but lots of other wild birds do.
Why would I want to introduce a mindless predator that will kill anything that moves just for fun?
Rick
-
Rick,
Please don't tar all the cats with that much used description. Some actually do behave in a friendly way to other animals / birds etc.
Yes, I have a cat or should I say that I live with a cat. She doesn't venture outside, takes a passing interest in things that move in the garden but has much too much sense to fancy the birds - mainly because they are bigger than she is.
This one is a Birman, in a way she was a rescue cat as she couldn't settle with her owner. She can drive me demented at times but would I be without her? No way.
To many people a cat is a vital part of their life and long may that remain so.
Regards,
Sweeper and Smally Too (the cat with a Bristol accent)

First of all it is only the cats that are left outside at night that go hunting. Our cat stays in at night and during the day is only allowed out in his own back yard. It is only the neglected cat that is left to fend for itself at night that kills wildlife.
In this country I would never encourage a toad in any place, they deserve to be killed on sight. They ooze a toxic poison that kills a greater number of wildlife than cats do.
Meow

-
Sweeper, I don't particularly like cats (for reasons stated) but I'd never tar one! (or harm one in any other way). That said, I wouldn't encourage them either.
Nearly all my neighbours have a cat (or cats) and they are all well-loved and well-fed. However, that does not stop their natural predatory instinct and they will stalk and harm/maim/kill almost anything that moves - day or night.

What a wonderful picture: I do like b&w cats. We have one b&w and one manky little black thing with a very common voice.

Hi Bigfella, don't have a downer on toads, they are all part of the great natural cycle and have been around for millions of years..... and they have'nt managed to kill of all the wildlife! I like cats but would'nt want to keep one as I also love the birds which inhabit my garden. It's not the first time a cat has been chased fron my garden with a handfull of pea shingle following its bum over the fence because it has been trying to kill the birds... during the day!
The only creatures I actually do kill on site are wasps, mosquitoes and horse flies, the latter two I actively hunt down and exterminate on site because they are persistent sods and bring me up in crippling lumps..little swines!!

Hi All you cat lovers. Here is another of my cat that sits on my laptop. Obviously this one prefers computers to boats especially when he wants to get warm and dry. Cheers Graham.

that a dell CATtitude?

I Have a Cornish Rex called Moogie, and like most cats she has a burning need to see what it is that I am doing. She spends hours sat on the end of my modelling bench, with the odd swipe at whatever she thinks she can get away with. The beauty of Rex Cats is they do not shed as much as normal cats, but i still get the odd hair on the paintwork and because of their type of fur it looks like short & curlies stuck to it..
-
The cat that deigns to reside at my house is a repressed sailor. Every time I build a boat it decides to inspect the inside of the hull no matter how big or small the hole is , in she goes! In this case it was checking out the engine room of the big Mersey I built.
-
Hi Bigfella, don't have a downer on toads, they are all part of the great natural cycle and have been around for millions of years..... and they have'nt managed to kill of all the wildlife!
As I said in this Country, Australia. The cane Toad was introduced into the Canefields in North Queensland to combat the cane beetle in 1935 (only 100 of them) and have since spread as far south as south of Sydney and as far west as West Australian border and spreading at a rate of 35km per year. This creatures body is Toxic from tadpole to well after its death. It can spurt deadly neuro Toxins from its glands on its body that can kill even humans let alone any wildlife that comes in contact with it, it can even kill when its body (after death) contaminates the water supply that all wildlife drinks from. It has decimated the snake and lizard population in the Kakadu wetlands. It has no known predators that can keep the population in check.
Given the choice of a Cane toad or a Cat well I think its a no brainer.
Regards David
-
I like cats, but I couldn't eat a whole one.
But I would give it a damn good go - they poop in the flower beds, take birds off the fences, scream and wail at night - people should only be allowed one cat per household, and they should only be let out on a lead like dogs are.
-
I agree Grasshopper, I believe in the "Dusk to Dawn Curfew" with cats not allowed out at night, and during the day only in a fenced and escape proof backyard. However some cat owners are less responsable than most and the cat usually gets the blame for being left out at night and like most creatures (including humans) when left to their own devices get bored.

Hi bigfella, just read your response re the toad thing. I forgot you were in Australia and suffer from the cane toad plaque so I take back what I said as far as your toad infestation is concerned. I did see a programme on tv showing the type of toad you have and so I agree with you and they should be stamped out (no pun intended)
Cheers. Chris
-
Hi Chris
I know it sounds cruel but when we were kids we used to go out Toad hunting, take a cricket bat or golf club and whack them on the head with it. These creatures are more deadly than Red Back Spiders. Some people go out and sprinkle salt on the toads this causes them to dehydrate as they drink via reverse osmosis through there skin. They end up like petrified wood. Of coarse the greenies don't like that and say we must kill them humanely by catching them and putting them in the freezer, no thanks not in amongst my fish fingers and frozen peas ;D ;D
Regards David
-
Bigfella,on the tv programme I saw, they were all crossing the road in droves, the car drivers were encouraged to run em over and.... uuugh!, I won't go into detail.
Sorry fellas didn't mean to hijack the cat thead... love the pics, keep em comin!

There is a bloke who has made Millions by stuffing the Toad skins and posing them with things like cans of beer and selling to tourists ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Rick,
I was never a cat lover until I met SWMBO 6 years ago, "Love me love my cat" was the quote when we first met. That was Robinson who died of old age last year, we now have a cat each (as well as Penny our Lurcher). In 6 years none of our cats have attacked any wildlife though Robinson was fascinated with spiders not that he ever killed one.
Clive :)
-
Unless you've kept them inside and watched them 24/7 your statement may be incorrect -
All animal behaviour is based on instinct, that instinct is only modified by humans, animals like cats (and your lurcher) are killers - that's what they are designed to do. If you let them out of the house, they will do what they're designed for - either for food or just the fun of it.
Just because you've never seen them do it, doesn't mean they haven't.
-
Hi sheerline,
I'm with bigfella on this one, as I live only an hour or so south of him, and cane toads are an absolute curse here too. Cricket bats, golf clubs, shovels, in fact almost any sort of a blunt (or even sharp) object will do, and cars are lethal to them. As was mentioned, salt is effective, but a spray of neat Dettol results in almost instant death. BTW bigfella, as I'm sure you're aware, Queenslanders are called cane toads in the Rugby League world, and have been known to be defeated by cockroaches; not this year though!!
Peter.

Hi Peter
I did not know about Dettol, I will have to give that a go. In regards to the cockroaches they may have survived the iceage but I think they have had their day in Rugby League ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hello chaps downunder, given the nature of your problem I have to say I am with you both on this cane toad thing. Although I usually adopt the 'live and let live' attidude to most creatures I will go after something when it becomes a real threat and a pest. We live in the country and at one time we had more than our fair share of rats due to a smallholding farming activity nearby (gone now thank goodness) and we took to shooting them in the end. I drew the line on em when one got into our loft, we figured out where it was coming in and it was climbing a cable which ran up the side of the house. As it would do this in the middle of the night we were unable to catch it in the act so I figured out a cunning plan to get it.
I wrapped two pieces of silver foil around the cable, spaced so the rat would straddle them as it climbed up. I dug out an old security lamp with an infra red detector fitted, removed the bulb and hooked the lamp terminals up to each of the pieces of foil. Having stategically placed the infra red detector adjacent to the foil wrappings around the cable, I plugged the thing in and left it. Sure enough, the following night there was a loud crack accompanied by a slight fluctuation in the house lighting. I never found the rat but if it survived, it certainly never returned and we have been rat free ever since.
Whilst I don't like being cruel to animals, this seemed the only way to deal with the problem because if the rat died, that would solve it immediately but even if it survived, being very smart and astute creatures, it would certainly think twice before climbing that cable again!
Perhaps there is a method for dealing with your cane toads here. I assume they are nicely conductive, in the electrical sense, and if you could find something that only cane toads like, you may be able to rig smething up and blast the little beggers. The biggest problem is in creating something selective.. which only kills the toads and nothing else but I guess you've got better brains than mine out there who have already looked at this problem.
Good luck chaps, don't get tennis elbow with all that bat swinging! ;D
Best regards..... Chris
-
Hi Chris
You should of got yourself some of those "evil killing pussy cats" that would have sorted out the rats.
Regards David
-
Hi David... My dog 'Sparky, sadly now gone, used to kill the rats and sad to say, a cat on these premesis wouldn't have survived his attentions either as he hated cats with a passion and would even hunt them down. We had to be very careful of him because he even learned the word 'cat' and would get very excited at the mere mention of it. His only problem was he couldn't stay out at night waiting for the 'loft rat' so thats why I turned to the techological solution. In any case, the technology didn't need feeding, didn't dig up my wife's plants and certainly left no foul smelling exhaust debris in the middle of the lawn! ;D
During this 'rat phase', I did begin shooting them and although many people abhor these creatures, I grew to respect them for their intellegence and tenacity. The shootings were necessary but I found the process quite distasteful as I am a but of a softy with animals. In the process however, I did learn a great deal about these creatures and found them truly adaptable, real survivors and Very Very smart!
Regards.... Chris

Hi Chris
We used to have a dog a bit like that when we were kids only he used to line up the cat so he could mount her. He was a randy dog he used to disappear for a couple of days when there was a dog on heat and come back with a smile on his face. ;D ;D ;D :o :o :o
Regards David

Your post made me laugh out loud at the thought of a dog having a go at a cat that way... ;D I'm still grinning when I think of it. It makes you wonder a bit about the cat though and I am trying to imagine the kind of expression which the cats' face would have during or after the event... :o ::) I bet someone here has a picture that would fit the bill.

Up till a month ago I had nine cats then I picked up a kitten by the pub thinking he's bound to be claimed, he wasn't so for a whole month we had ten cat's with our three dogs, untill last week one of them was killed by a car, ironic really we picked the kitten up to stop him being killed.

David thanks yes it is, it's something you get used to but still can't get over, I lost the cat but would you believe in a few hours we'd lost the body, maybe it was easier as then I wasn't able to bury her the tears were a couple of days later funny looking at her two sisters and one brother and not seeing her.
Thanks, Andrew.

Cats don't have it all their own way.
The first one shows him being faced off by a smaller jack russell, Bandit (who eventually won).
The next three show Vinnie the mog, early morning (the one day in summer it didn't rain) after he saw a bit of wildlife, he didn't win this one either, the magpie saw him off in quick fashion.
The last one shows the true cats attitude, one for the boss's crissy card.

Boiling would be too good for everyone else's cat which c**** in my garden!
We have lots of wild boar around here and they come right up to my fence at night but their c*** is not as offensive as cats. French cats don't seem to bury. However, you should see the mess the wild boar make as they root around, turning over the soil to find roots and tubers to eat.

Shortly after I took that I opened a tin and she was one of the first there, soon as she'd finished back to the tin she went. Wild boar aren't they meanr to be dangerous?

Andy,
So far we have had to rescue a bird, a fox and a cat.
She didnt hurt them just caught them.
I think it was because they ran or flew away.
She is the softest dog we have ever had including Labs, but by far the most powerful but she is a pet, not a guard dog!!
Bob
-
Best way that is why the Rottie has had such bad press; there is one here in Holyhead she must be getting on a bit, she walks miles with her owner, I don't think I have ever seen her on a lead, she doesn't need one, a good example of how a dog should be, I wish my idiots were the same.

While on the subject of working girls, I submit these two. The one on the left is called "Pumpkin" (not by me) and comes when called. The one o the left is un-named and is not as enamoured with humans unless the human provides certain quantities of food at regular times during the week. Both are my barn cats and do a good job of keeping the rodents down. Pumpkin particularly likes working from the rafters.
I can generally have up to eight cats in the barn at any one time (I'm down to three right now). The local coyotes keep the turn over going, plus the odd bit of road kill. As a side note, the coyotes were particularly active and voicestrous last night.

One way to begin your day: We have been a family who have had cats for a very very long time and the two who stayed with us the longest one 22 nearly 23 and the last one ginger and white we had her for 20 years and sadly last year he popped off.
Anyway, we said NO MORE PETS - 3 rabbits, 2 cats and a goldfish....we lost the goldfish shortly after the cat SO NO MORE PETS - Rusty ginger was a character and a half.
here though the story begins.....the next door neighbour is also an amimal lover - he originally had 4 dogs and 2 cats - and he came in one day with another cat which he had rescued from his dad's neighbour - because they used to beat it and bash it....anyway Kevin our neighbour had a big fight with them and said he was taking her to live with him. The cat couldnt settle with the dogs and in the end she lived outside......eventually taking refuge in the Mrs' greenhouse where she started to feed her - anyway she has eventually wormed her way into the house (so has the cat :D {-)) and she will not leave - we have spoken to Kevin the neighbour on numerous occasions and he said he doesnt mind her staying here - a cat will choose her own owner :embarrassed: ::)
This is fine....okay and she is starting to become part of the family - until the findings this fine morning - bear in mind the house is fitted with a cat flap and we are training her to use it......she can come in , but by hell she wont go out through it - you put her through the front door and she comes back quick through the back door (cat flap)....
anyway, she doesnt like to be outside no more............ :-\ :-\ :-\
We have a 1000 piece jigsaw under way on the sitting room table - so, the Mrs gets up and she thought I had made her a dark wooden ornament in the hearth (similar to Stonehenge in shapes) it turned out to be 'shine a light' present from our new feline!
I turned round to pick the jigsaw box lid up with all the pieces in it - only to find she had used that lid as a toilet tray - wetty!
Here she is ...... jigsaw in bin, she Queen still .......... but by God she is out tonight O0 :)
aye

Here are my four queens, First is Shelley then Molly, Rosie and Megan. The last three are all rescue cats from local shelters and Molly was dumped on my friends farm in a terrible condition.
-
I'd love a little Rosie.
-
She is just a ball of mischief, she three years old and still behaves like a kitten. ;D

Here are 2 shots of our cat Oscar. One shows him doing what he does best, sleeping, and the other is of a more active moment, he is actually standing up. Mind you, he is almost 14 years old so I suppose he is entitled to take it easy.
I referred to him as "our" cat, but he's really our daughter's. In 1996 she decided she HAD to have a cat, ::) so got one for free, then 6 months later she decided to go off to London to work for 2 years, and we were asked to mind the cat. Over 13 years later, we are still minding the cat, so I suppose he really is ours now. {-)

Peter,
A regal, grand old chap he looks too. O0

He is Footski, and as they say, dogs have owners, cats have servants, and Oscar has two of them :) (servants that is)
