Title: What armory of glues and fillers?
Post by: lesfac on November 16, 2015, 08:16:50 am
I have just ordered a Severn lifeboat kit and I would be grateful if experienced builders would share their knowledge of the best suite of fillers and adhesives that I should have at hand. (Fiberglass hull and superstructure)
I think using the right stuff in the first place will avoid any heartache redoing bits.
For instance i made parts for my other boat using stopping paste which I though would be a nice filler but it took a long time to harden right through a thick section and repeatedly shrank . I would like to avoid getting it wrong as it can mess the components up.
Thanks in advance
Les

C'mon guys.
I built my Perkasa using polyester resin and it has worked fine but its a bit messy.

What is generally used to fix the prop shaft and rudder tubes?
What's the best non shrink filler?

Using the right stuff makes most jobs easier

Hi Les for filler I use Upol easylite. It's a two pack filler that sands very easily and I have had no problems with it at all. It doesn't shrink and seems to stick to any clean and degreased surface. I can't help with the glues for fibreglass as my build is wooden

I would recommend the big 4oz bottles of Z-Poxy 5 minute epoxy, in conjunction with Plastic Padding Glass Fibre Paste for the big bonding jobs, hull to deck etc..It is a passable filler but I would suggest a good quality two part car body filler as well. You can also purchase Micro Balloons or fibre powders, which are good for bulking up epoxy joints.
Other than that, a decent cyano and activator, possibly a contact glue for glazing..and of course a star to steer her by :-)
