hi all
apart from my intrests in listening to planes ships and lifeboats on my scanner and ais tracking on my compuiters in my shed, i am toying with the idea of of getting a kit of a train, i noticed airfix and i have noticed kitmaster under roburts or somthing and kitmaster under another name in plastic bag, has i never built a model before witch one would you say would be easy one to start off with
-
Try something simple to start with. The little 0-4-0 Pug started life with Kitmaster, was taken on by Airfix and is now covered by Dapol, so both your suggested manufacturers had a hand in it. Use a piece of picture frame glass to get everything sitting level.
-
what diffreance with dapol plastic bag and robusrt box, box one says moving parts, i have look for the pug 0-4-0, i was looking also at airfix BR railcar even kitmaster GWR tank in BR green or black, im more BR fan thne privert
-
is that tank, also what diffreance with dapol plastic box and robusrt box, box one says moving parts, i have look for th epug 0-4-0, i w slooking also at airfix BR railcar even kitmaster GWR tank in BR green, im more BR fan thne privert
The Dapol BR Railcar is a nice kit, be check the major panels for straightness
I built one and motorized it with lights :)
-
br railcar seems already panited, steam ones seem to need painting before hand, does it come with key to what paints to get from local model railway shop etc

It's a while since I made one, but the moving parts are wheels, valve gear and pivoting coupling, so these should still be as original. Have a look on that auction site as there are usually a lot offered.
-
yes i bene looking on there and seen many from the airfix BR railcar to tanks and tenders,

It depends what colour plastic the kit comes in. For a first effort, you could do the loco black all over, with red buffer beams, brass rails and buffers. Instructions usually cover these things.

yeah one on the site showed pics and parts of the body was already dark green

Go on! take the plunge. You never know, it might lead to a whole model railway. Whatever you do, enjoy it and use the experience. Best of luck.

If you have Stobart's Low Loader the Pug would make an excellent load to go on it. Living near the Great Central Railway I see all kinds of loco's going through town on lorries.

Greetings
Any of the Dapol range are reasonably straightforward and can be produced to whatever standard you want...Ill drop in some pictures of an ongoing build I have running later...a good test for me :}
As the guys suggest the pug is a good starter
Main thing is just enjoy the build...you never know where you will end up LOL
-
Here is a link to a few images of an ongoing project utilising the Dapol/airfix Mogul Loco..creating two versions of the same loco, one in Barry Island scrapyard condition and one in return to service Presevation condition....This is also a tester for my linking externally stored images to foorum posts...the password for the folder is shipmates here goes ...... http://s666.photobucket.com/user/fireboot999/library/BR%20Standard%20Class%204%202-6-0%20Mogul (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/fireboot999/library/BR%20Standard%20Class%204%202-6-0%20Mogul)

hi
the link is passward protected
-
Password should be shipmates
-
that looks great, did you paint the controls before put on or did you mask everytihng off
-
Thanks..the controls are all moulded on so it was spray the whole part black and then using a size 0 brush paint the pipes, gauges and water glasses by hand :-))
-
nice work
-
i have brought thr pug, the mogul, schools class rugby, city of truro and the battle of britian class, wish me luck, also what type paint and code of paint do i use ?
-
It's a matter of choice, really. For some really good advice, go to www.uamf.org.uk (the Unofficial Airfix Modellers' Forum) and go down to the Cars,Trucks, Bikes, Locos and other civvie vehicles thread. Some locos in there.

Most Rail modellers use these:-
https://www.howesmodels.co.uk/subcat/RailMatch%20Paint%20-%20Acrylic
https://www.howesmodels.co.uk/subcat/RailMatch%20Paint%20-%20Enamel
Depends on your preferred medium
Alos humbrol do a range of rail colours but only in acrylic
http://www.humbrol.com/uk-en/shop/paints/acrylic-rail-colours.html
-
Exactly what Essex said...and for the overall black locos you can do a lot worse than a Halfords matt black spray can :-) ( Other brands of aerosol paint are available :} )
-
what about umbrol if thats what it called ?

witch ones would be better humbrol or ones from the other site, aslong as i get likes of BR black or BR gren steam wise
-
I've used the railmatch Acrylic as I found them to give better coverage then humbrol Acrylics
the railmatch enamels are good and many swear by them but I prefer acrylics
-
so the preferd option is railmatch i look into that
-
also i forgot to ask what is best size brush
