Title: A regulator for the oscillating steam launch engine.
Post by: DougMaz on February 02, 2016, 11:17:01 am
I've just finished 2 Twin cylinder oscillating launch steam engines. Buy Basil Harley but the regulator to make them run back and fourth is so hard to understand on the print I need help. I was told its explained in the Model Boats August 1988 "Starting in steam " Item 3. Can anyone HELP me please. I have tried to Google it but it's was no good.  Thanks.

Nice looking engines Doug :-))...did you metricate the build or are they still in that dreaded imperial rubbish? {-)

I am away in Adelaide until months end, but member Garry Gillam will be able to help you with the photograph resizing

However the question you ask may well be a closely guarded secret known only to a few Poms, a Scot or two...+ a man from Japan & the gentleman from China who may well have reverse engineered it  %)

Hi Doug, I can see it now :-))  that is the engine for Miranda based on a 1880 paddle boat engine
I have the plans and will get a look at them tomorrow and take a few pics of my Miranda engine
Not sure what you are not understanding as from memory if wee look at the ports like a clock the one at 6 is drilled from the base then blanked the others I cannot remember and seem to remember been confused like you when I made her
This is Victorias plant that also has a Miranda regulator fitted I tend to use them and fitting one to the Netta engine.

Thanks Frazer you went to a lot of trouble but now I can see what goes on with the pipes. Back to the workshop and give it a try. Cheers Doug.

Hi Doug, no problem just let me know when.
Guess the means I will have to dust them of. Miranda was the first steam launch I built so she is a bit rough round the edges.
Do you plan on building the complete plant as I ended up gas firing her with a simple poker burner.
I keep promising to her rebuild her but other projects keep getting in the way
I added some twisted copper strips down the fire tubes and it did seem to help a little

Yes I will be starting the boilers soon. I made 2 engines because why'll you set up the milling machine to do one you my as well make another then I will sell one. So if anyone out there is in the market to buy a steam engine for a launch with a boiler let me know.  When we are in Durham I will send you a post to meet you.Doug.
