I have been looking at a number of options myself.

These were of interest.

1. Worx bladerunner 2.
I am still considering one of these because of ease of use.

This is a tabletop fret saw that will do what a bandsaw and table (circular saw) will do. They seem well rated.

2. POWER8 workshop.
18v cordless power tool system. If I was putting modelling tools together, and I had none already, this would do me.
Rated highly on Amazon and another member on here gave it the thumbs up. Convenience of cordless as well.

For modelmaking a bandsaw is much more useful IMO.

If you are just considering a band saw Vs table saw, then I have to agree.

I concur with the majority of members.  A band saw is far more useful in the model making context.  The circular really only cuts straight lines and although they can be handy the band saw would be far more versatile and will also cut straight lines.  Go for a good make and check as many product reviews as you can.  Also choose one that has easily available or common sized blades.

One thing I have seen on the woodworking forums.
If a budget saw is properly set up, tuned/tweaked, and fitted with a quality blade, it can perform much better than it does out of the box.

Its a great bit of kit, but can be a bit of a faff when converting between functions

Hi, I have seen a band saw with an adjustable guide to give straight cutting so you get the best of both.

For straight cutting with a band saw the wider the blade the better  Bill..

Power 8 and similar systems like the impressive 'Shop smith' are excellent providing you are good at planning ahead, as once you remove the so and so tool, it will lose the accurate cut/drill/routing set up meaning that if you forgot you needed to do more of the same or break a part then you have to set it up again and regain that accuracy or the new/extra bits will not be the same.

A band saw is very versatile and I have found that a quarter inch deep 14tpi blade is the most versatile, being able to cut metal as well as wood and plastics.

Do be mindful also, that a size/make of tool can go out of production and so the stock of spares may become scarce. The lower blade guid holder on mine broke and Axminster sent me the very last one they had. There looked to be a slight imperfection in the metal causing it to fail but the saw was no longer in warranty.

Enjoy the machine and look after it as it will save you time and improve accuracy.

Go for the band saw but keep one blade just for straight cutting. Once a blade has been used for curved work it will never cut a correct straight line. Something to do with different amounts of wear on the teeth (or so my old college tutor used to say). And get the widest blade you can fit on your machine for straight cuts (you wont be tempted to use it on curved cuts.

Darned common sense! A Lathe is very versatile and can be used for some milling jobs.
