Title: Barge Bulwarks
Post by: Geoff C on March 15, 2016, 06:09:15 pm
Hi Guys,  How are bulwarks fitted on Thames Barges, both real and model.     There doesn't seem to be any stations to hold it up.     Many thanks Geoff C.

Not sure how they do it on models but full size appears to be nailed into the covering board through the thickness of the rail.

Same practice on models. I use 1mm brass rod to pin the rail (bulwark) to the cover board, after first very carefully applying a bead of thick cyano or Araldite to the lower edge of the rail. (bulwark).

Many thanks for that.   I can carry on with my build now.     What a cracking website

They are dumb bolts driven in with a 14lb mall, watched shipwrights fit them in real barges, the bolt being slightly larger than the hole. They take some weight used to make the running backstays fast to the rails.
