Amongst other builds I have made a good start on the Challenger, not quite sure if it will end up as the stand off scale Virgin boat or not but more on that as the build progresses, the grp hull was to thin and flimsy for my liking so the thickness was doubled with fibre mat and resin, the decks have been fitted and the water jet drives dry fitted to check everything lines up..
Would this type of boat have any anti fouling on the hull, I presume this type of boat would be kept on land until needed?
Thanks
Russ

Wow! Nice work! :o

Jet boat builds and equipment are very interesting Russ......so you will have many followers :-))
What are the principal dimensions?.......[about 48" O/A?]
Keep the images coming............ Derek

It is the graupner kit...

Hi Derek
The length of the hull is 1220mm and with the water jet protection it will measure around 1320mm..
-
Evening Russ..............
I just guestimated 48" length of hull from the length of your B&D type work bench :o
48" = 1219mm, so the actual of 1220mm was pretty close %)
The little we see in the robustness of construction appears very sound......so let's see the progress

Hi Russ,
Looking forward to seeing this build progress, what are you planning motor and battery wise?
Alex
-
Not to sure on size yet but they will be brushless, maybe 650kv,s? I am a little old school and still like my lead acids for batteries, if people can assure me that lipo,s will not blow up in the middle of the lake I might be tempted to go down that route.
-
Hi Russ,
I am running Lipos in my jet drive build and they are fine, the big problem I am having at the moment is with motor selection, as I am relatively new to brushless motors, I am finding the selection process to be a tad confusing. I am making my own jet units based upon the same Graupner ones you have, these units operate around 18-20K RPM, so I have been making my motor and battery voltage choice accordingly, 17-1800KV on 3s, tests with a watt meter on the lake are showing horrifying current draws at full power though, full power cruise is 100A, where as half throttle cruise is 30A.
This is the part that confuses me, to obtain the motor's peak power rating, I need to up the voltage to 6s, but won't also double the RPM? or am I missing something fundamental here?

Hi Alex
It has been a while since I dabbled with brushless, I shall have to look at my past builds on here, the last time was back in 2010 when I built the 1/12 Tamar, I am fairly sure they were Turnigy 750kv running on either 12 or 18volt with Seaking 60amp speed controllers, I will be doing some research soon so will let you know what I end up with...
-
After a little research I think these will be something like what I will be going with...

-
Hi, I used 1100kv 3674 turnigy inrunners on 4s in mine. I got rid of the belt drives. It went well....
https://youtu.be/uxwBmg0tmsU
-
Interesting Tom, it goes well, do you have the belt pulleys spare?
-
I have a lot of them some where, I bought all I could find as spares. Seriously though with brushless you'll just shred the belts. And with those motors and the gear reductions you'll be only getting maybe 7k rpm (860x14.8x0.5). I'd go direct drive.
-
A little premature I know but some of the engineers/crew turned up today....

I used an earlier set years ago which didn't include any females, but found the poses were a bit unsuitable for tug crew. So cast some in urethane after chopping them and re-posing to suit.
They are well detailed though.
Ian.

A little more done, superstructure is coming along and made the rear wing and mounted the radars, the rear wing took a fair bit of filler to get right...

Cheers John, yes the damned boating bug looks to of bit again :embarrassed:
-
I have fitted the air ducts to the rear wing and lined the deck in styrene, not a fan of plywood decks for the finish, new crew in better boating attire turned up yesterday, will try paint these in the next couple of weeks...

Impressive figures Russ, are they a Italieri product?
John
-
Hi John
They are Tamiya 1/20 Tire changing crew, I am fairly sure they are very similar figures to the Yacht crew they did years ago, figure painting not one of my strong points though, never mind, they won't get noticed in the middle of the lake!

I managed a few hours in the garage today mainly concentrating on the aft of the boat, made the guard around the jets and the rear deck section with exhausts and life rafts, the main wing has been fixed, all looking a bit on the white side but hopefully when I start detailing it should break it up.

I hate to be the one to point it out (and tell me to *$€# off of it was intentional) but the uprights for the roll over structure should be almost flush with the edge of the deck.
A la

It could cause some issues when adding the Martini stripes!
-
Oh yes, never realised that, looks like I know what today's job is >>:-(
-
Actually I am at a bit of a loss here then because the the top section of the wing was only that length, I have cut none off it? I have a spare but that is the same size as well? I will have to scratch build one...
-
The supports aren't perendicular to the cross piece, they are at an angle
-
Yes just realised, all back to normal now, I think I may make the rear wing in aluminium next time, just need fathom out how to get the thickness of the curved uprights...

Pity you can't add a bit to the bottom and reshape them, rather than start again.
Ian.
-
Hi Ian
I have another set which were spare, just building them up now...
-
G'day Russell,
Another thing I thought I would mention is the really exagerated mould part lines on the Tamiya figures. I had the same problem when I did mine, but I spent a bit of time removing them so that they weren't that noticeable. A lot can be easily scraped off with a sharp blade, then finish with files.
Ian.
-
I will fettle them up when I come to finish painting.
-
A few more pics of the Challenger, most of the external works are done, new rear wing made and aft end more or less finished now, need to source decals next....

It looks good Russ :-))
I bet there are more Tamiya pit crews on model boats
than there are on race dioramas 8)

Thanks for the comments chaps, hopefully have some time today to finish some of the finer detail on her..

I know that several of my boats are purely crewed by Tamiya pit crews!
Lovely job Russ :-))

Figure painting not my strongest point but look ok..
