Hi, back with my latest build, based the hull off vessels built down here by a well known boat builder Tony Franov ,he built quiet a few timber (then later steel) in the 1960's through to the 1980's.
This model is based on a 64 ft x 19.25 ft x8 ft hull , so on the 1:16 scale she is 48x 14.5 x6 inchs.
I used 1/2 inch Tasmanian oak for keel , stem and deadwood areas and 1/2 inch ply for the frames.
Found the drill press handy for holding the oil filler tube in position while soldering her to the stern tube.
The curved frames at her stern are 5/8 inch tasmanian oak.
-
Nice work, Are you hand cutting it or using a band saw?
-
Fantastic woodwork! :-))
-
hi there , use the band saw as much as possible.
-
Next lot of photo's are.
Ran the 2 deck planks around first then started on the garbad planks.
Decided to plank her stern this way, when finish will have the false stern stem ( what ever you want to call it ) will sit across the planking joints.
Showing the hull nearly planked to her deck level.
-
More photo's.
Stern and bow view of planking.
showing the false stern stem in position and the start of the sponson's attached after being steamed (used pine for the aft short section) the remainder of the sponson's are of Tasmanian oak.
Front view showing start of the ribbing.
-
Wow Brian, absolutely stunning! Be shame to paint over your beautiful plank work.
-
Master work! Great!
-
Wonderful woodwork! Never seen such a beautiful hull before!!! :-))
-
A truly beautiful stern BB .......perhaps could confirm what some of the shipwrights marks mean.....as we see
X's, V's, +'s and a few ==='s {-)
..and while you are at it, what specie are the planks?......Derek
-
Morning guys, the planking is Limewood , next section of photo's are.
My steamer, boiler for any sections I need to be a bit more flexible ,showing the ribs cramped in after steaming ,generally leave them over night before glueing them in , then fillers glued in between each rib before the Merbau shelve installed.
-
Beautiful...... :-))
Oh and missyd........I have seen some equally lovely woodwork on a hull...... ok2

Not in Switzerland! ok2

Don't go all modest on us Danielle! Your carpentry is just as attractive and a delight to see going together. I love what I see here as well BB. Those joggled (correct term? Probably not) plank ends and the stern are visual delights. I am sure that if you built a medievil ship it would look blooming first rate+

Not in Switzerland! ok2
Have to acknowledge your local knowledge, however, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. O0 O0

Hi there ,next lot of photo's.
Installed heavier shelves where the aft trawl gantries will be situated .
The deck beams are 1/2 x 5/8 inch of Red Oak.
Pre fitted (before remainder of deck beams installed) the ballast box and motor beds etc, for the motor using a MFA 965D211 (850 type) 2:1:1 reduction , spinning a 90 mm 4 blade prop.
Showing all the deck beams installed , ready to fit the ply under lay for the deck strips.....
-
Hi next section of photo's.
The 2mm under lay ply pre cut ready to lay on the deck beams prior to the 1.5mm lime wood deck strips.
The next 2 photo's are of a piece of Red Cedar i bought back with me when i visited my Mother at Christmas time ,it originally was taken from the old wash house well over 30 yrs ago and was then used as a prop under part of the avocado tree, I didn't realize how much of a party the white ants had had in it ,any way was able to cut enough strips out of it for the deck cover strips.
Then the start of the deck house base...
-
Seems like the white ants weren't too fussed with the Cedar.
Must have been plenty of other nice stuff around instead
-
The little bugars (white ants) aren't fussed about attacking any timber stacked with creosote painted on the bearers <*< .
The frames made for the lift out deck sections, and testing them out in their positions.
The cedar deck cover strips fitted on the raise deck area.
Fitting the cover strips around the stern section, and the end result with the cover strips down.
-
Good lord that is amazing carpentry. I love the small bits and how even though they are ging to be hidden, you have made them all tidy and finished like the crew would still see them.
I know I had said that before but it bears saying again. Astounding quality. I can see you building a Nelsonian era warship and making a beautiful job.
-
Thanks for that Ballastanksian , but my knowledge of rigging I wouldn't be able to fill a match box, when i look at the work involved in rigging a sailing ship bit out of my patience and league.
Construction of the Wheelhouse ( will only be a deck house with a fly bridge on her ,or what we call a fly bridge ? ).
Decking the raise deck area i was going to lay the outside strips as I have done before but thought it may look crappy, so had to get the precision tools out ,if any one is worried that super glue isn't strong enough I can assure you it wasn't in a hurry to give up to easy.
Laying the decking at the stern and , only a few pieces each side till completed.
Giving the deck a thin coat of Estapol just to seal it till later.
-
Definitly very crisp deck planking :-))
-
Hi back again.
W-house taking shape, front window sections cut out and cutting i layer of the ply out for the windows to recess into.
-
That is a work of art BB
John
-
Truly a beautiful piece of workmanship.
I watch each instalment with awe. Well done indeed.
:-))

-
Brian,
Some good ideas here and I note the similarity of your construction methods.
:-)) :-)) :-))
-
Love it love it love it! It is like you are building it plank for plank like the real thing was constructed.
:-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Thanks guys glad you like her, next section of the build,
Showing top of w house with the base for the fly bridge stanchions to be attached to.
All the bulwarks stanchion post fitted.
First layer of the bulwark planking attached ( strengthens it all up less chance of snapping one off), she will have an insert in the bulwarks.
Showing the bow section planked up ,she still has another rail above this section.
The stern section with the inserts .

It's OK Folks.......have sent a message via Courier pigeon to BB [Wollongong to Mid-North Queensland] suggesting not give up his day job {-) ......Derek

:o :o :o
We regret to advise, that such carrier pigeon, colour blue, was shot from the sky, after passing into Qld airspace.
Please accept our profound apologies, <:( <:( <:( there was no indication it was on a mercy mission. O0 O0 O0

Hi back again...
All the staunchan post have been recessed to allow the side capping strips.
Side strips in position prior to the capping rail.
Fly bridge with the fillers in between the post prior to its capping rail being attached.
Fly bridge capping shaped and ready to be attached.
Installed extra sort ribs for added strength around her shoulders......
-
Hi , next photos.
Slide door frames being fitted on the deck house.
I got lazy didn't plank the false rail used 1.2mm ply, gluing the shoulder sponsons (Tasmanian Oak )on after they were steamed and left in a jig over night.
Ready for priming and undercoating.
-
Seems a shame to cover up all that lovely woodwork.
-
Hi There next lot...
Starting on the back trawl gantries, using 3/8 " & 1/4" copper tubing, most has come off our trawlers over the yrs, took a bit of time tapping here and there straitening the pieces.
Soldering the swing arms etc.
Pre fitting the gantries in their position on the back deck area.
Making the lugs etc for the mast & Boom.
Cutting out the hand railing flanges.....
-
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-))
-
Thanks missyd :-) ..
Fitting the front hand railing.
Copper and brass work ready to be painted.
Bits n pieces painted.
Ready to solder the back w house ladder on.
Few more bits n pieces and the motor etc all installed ready for testing ( dry run).
-
Beautiful, as always Brian. I can't wait to see this one.
BTW, we're at Elliott Heads right now, only about 1400 km south of you {-)
Peter.
-
Never seen such a cleanly fixed RC equipment before!!!
-
And your metal fabrication is as good as your carpentry Brian.
As ever, I am impressed and inspired by your work.
-
Hi there, just a few ks down the road Peter, hope you are enjoying camping down there. :-)
Showing the hull before the external bits n pieces attached.
Back deck area after gantries ,winch's etc attached.
-
Its just brilliant and so clean looking.
Top job :-))
-
Absolutely stunning B.B. Very inspiring! :-))

Hi guys thanks, these are the last of the photos till I give her a run , have been waiting for Old Shrimper to arrive back here from caravanning down the bottom end of Aus ,so we can get some photos etc of her maiden voyage, thanks for viewing :-)) .
-
What a great result, well done.
Any other projects on the horizon?
-
hi Steve, since building this I refurbished (over 5 weeks) a model that my Father made some 60 yrs ago over, will put that up next, and since that have started on a UK fish trawler.......
-
Brian has a production line going in that shed near Cairns {-)
Peter.
-
Hi Peter, did have one going last year but now just a big mess, Catherine came down to the shed yesterday and said 'You go too fast' and that if I made them half the size they would look cuter :o .....
-
Women see things differently to us Brian :} and I'm guessing that cuteness is not what you're looking for {-)
Peter.
-
I think it's more like if it's half the size then it will be half of what ever this has cost O0 .
-
Ah Brian, but mention to her that it will take twice as long to build, due to the intricacy of the reduced size nor will it be as cute.
Maintaining the current size enables you to be "away" from her for less time. :-)) :-))
Good luck O0 O0
Looking good at current scales
-
Hi RAAArtyGunner yes they definitely think different to us ,Catherine says they all look the same :o , yep pointy end and a blunt end the only similarity...
-
Hi,, well we took the 2 models out for a run at the local watering hole at Ross and Locke, in the first photo fellow model makers David Saul and Bob (Old Shrimper) we had a good morning every thing went well.......
-
They definitely look the part. O0 O0 :-)) :-))
-
Lovely pics of the 2 wonderful models!!!! :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
-
100% class Brian. There are full scale cabinet makers who would do a lesser job than you have.
If you walked through the door of a model boat convention with these models, and there was a model competition, then I think the judges would just give you the trophies as I cannot fault them in any way. They look and as importantly sail well.
-
I concur with my learned colleagues. Fantastic job. I look forward to the next one.
-
Lovely photos Brian, and not a croc in sight {-) The low angle shots make the boats look very realistic.
Peter.
-
Lovely pics of the 2 wonderful models!!!! :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))
Wot. :o :o :o
Bob and Brian. %) %)
-
Hi Guys thanks, glad you have enjoyed the builds, Hi Peter ,there were 2 people swimming just around the corner from us so the models were safe ( unless it needed some tooth picks to use after a meal) sorry couldn't help that ok2 .
-
Are you pulling our leg about the crocodile?
Do they get them in Byron Bay?
-
Hi Steve, at present I am up at Edmonton just south of Cairns N.Qld the water way where we try the models are just west of Gordonvale.
-
That far north is there anything that doesn't kill you?
-
Yes Steve, the water's quite safe, as long as you only drink it and don't swim in it {-)
Peter.
-
Hi There. made a set of trawl boards and net for this model and to use with the new model. We gave her a try out on N.Y.Eve in the North arm at Ballina N.S.W , couldn't ask for a better spot to try, nice flat sandy bottom (bit clearer would have been nice) and no terrorist that time of year to dodge, before any more runs with this gear just have to knock a bit of spread off the boards but other wise she looked the part while towing........
-
You do model engineering as well as carpentry! Lovely boat Brian. I like the attention to detail making the nets and the trawl boards which are models on their own.
As we have come to expect, award winnable work :-))
-
What was the catch like??
Probably gave the big boys a run for their money :-)) :-)) :-))
-
Hi guys, the nice little schools of fish we did see there were educated ,they would just part and run down either side of the net ,but anyway all wasn't lost we did end up with bag full of weed :).
-
Fantastic work! Just like the real net and trawl doors! :-)) :-)) :-))
