Title: 46" Crash Tender? Restoration
Post by: DavidCase on July 22, 2016, 09:24:31 pm
Hi guys, I'm new to the site but have made model boats and planes on and off for a number of years. I'm just about to start on a restoration of this boat mentioned above. Its 46" so 1/12 scale. I don't know its age but its all wood construction. One prop, which I'm planning to change to twin. It was used with an engine, but I'm happier using two motors.

Can anyone identify this model and if I want to set it up as an RAF Crash Tender, is there anywhere I can find the fittings, because it has none.

Cheers
David

Hi David
The boat maybe an Aerokits and this site has a number of chaps who have posted rebuilds of this boat, also checkout model boats forum website.

RAF crash tender produced by Vospers, to attend to the flying boats based at Calshot in the solent.
Two boats were built numbered 93 and 94.

Bit more info
Two boats in the class 93 & 94 of the 46ft Crash & Rescue tenders were constructed by Vosper Ltd of Portsmouth in1952 for the R.A.F.

The hulls were of double skin mahogany on birch plywood framing. Powers was from two Rover Meteorite engines of 375 hp each, These were a V8  type engine of 18 litres Drive was to 2 X 3 blade props (both rotating the same way) Giving a top speed of 28 + knots
Fire fighting was from two 3.5 fire monitors that could spray water of foam.
The power for the pumps was from a Ford V8 engine to give 5-600 g.p.m. This pump was also be used as a salvage pump for rescue work she was fitted with a spring tow hook, line throwing equipment and rockets, stretchers and a portable davit.
The two craft were taken into service in 1952-53 at Calshot. They spent many year as experimental craft for it is alleged that they were designed to complement the SARO princess flying boats that spent many years at Calshot. The craft were reported to have startling acceleration and could stop in there own length once the automatic 7 sec time delay came into effect on the reverse gear.
They had a turning circle of three boat lengths at 28,5 knots.
Both boats were sold from service in 1958.

It looks very much like the aerokits model, I built this same boat a few years back, I made most of the fittings myself at the time, I did modify the interior to include the front galley and detail the wheelhouse, mainly from photo,s found on the net.
