Title: TID Tug
Post by: IKB on August 30, 2016, 12:14:35 am
Hi Guys,

I bought this tiny TID tug off eBay about a year ago and finally got around to bench testing, it works well, but everything could do with improving.

Bonjour Alex,
Nice little tug but not so many room to work around the steam plant !
If you wish improving it, may I suggest you to add a whistle ? This is the solution I found to do it on the boats which had not one originally :

For security reasons, I also equip all my boats with a gas regulator and a remote controlled safety gas valve (examples) :

And if you wish testing other navigation possibilities, there is FPV : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOi_KWU_OCc  :police:

Bonjour rhavarne,

I am going to look at adding a whistle, the issue I have at the moment is space, or lack there of and although a whistle would be great, I would prefer to start and stop the engine remotely, which means fitting another servo, as well as rebuilding the engine into a, "V" configuration.

Alex,
Forget about a whistle, Tugs don't have them it's Bull Horns they have.
As you are stuck for space have a look at this Mini servo (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9g-Mini-Micro-Servo-RESIN-gears-Futaba-JR-Hitec-NEW-/221377315788?hash=item338b1dc3cc )  I have used them for control valves and even as a rudder servo and the prices are good, the company has a quick delivery.

Also forget about Gas control and boiler level control, these can all be added if you wish in a latger boat later, they are not a necessity .

I look forward to see how you squeeze the controls in.

George.

Bonjour George,
Quite easier to add a whistle than a Bull horn in a steam tug  ;)
And I would complete that you can put  all what I described in a little boat, you are right, with mini servos.
This is what I did in my 82 cm Jan de Sterke tug for example (vertical boiler) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHinBwExwpA or its brother Otto Laufer (horizontal boiler): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuJ3wwVg-IU
I confirm, there is no room !

Hi Guys,

I really don't have any room, my TID is half the size of rhavarne's, "Jan de Sterke"  %%
