looking for suggestions as to either humbrol or tamiya paint would suffice for RN decks circa late 80's
Through to 90's

Rob, I've always used Humbrol sea grey M27
-
Agree, I would also suggest Humbrol 67 fresh out of the tin. Before sun, sea and foot prints wears it down.
-
From 1968, the RN used either BS381C 632 Dark Admiralty Grey or 638 Dark Sea Grey for decks. Humbrol 5 and 164. Bad news, 5 is gloss for some reason in the Humbrol range. Using one for the deck and the other for the flight deck does help the look of a model.
From about 1990 they have used BS381C 640 Extra Dark Sea Grey, Humbrol 123.

Many thanks for replies. Mudway for HMS Bristol circa 190-91 it looks like humbrol 123, would you agree?

I'd say so, a member of our club is bullding a 1/72 scale one & that's his deck colour.
-
Thanks and I am 1/72 as well, will let you know result :-))
-
Christian's hull I presume. :-))

Correct :} :}

Quick update, having tried the Humbrol 123 I thought it was too dark as did the users but felt it was going the correct way, so ordered some made up in a matt spray to the exact BS number and also a can of hull paint to exact match. They arrived today and test pieces show spot on, matched the hull grey to my tin of very thick hull paint "liberated from paint store on Lusty, Deck gray is great far more subdued than humbrol and a lovely finish. The spray cans also have a little lever that allows adjustment of the spray pattern, very good.
So thanks one and all a good result in the end

Pardon my ignorance but I thought some of the RN decks were green, is that not the case? I am particularly keen to find out what the deck colour of HMS Active (type 21) is btw.

Active would have had Grey Decks

Many thanks Ned

As a rough guide, deck green went out of use by the end of the 1970s, so if Active was in service in the late seventies, it would have started life with green decks.

Thanks Rob I wanted to model her soon after commissioning circa 1977/8 as she was fitted with Exocet and Amazon was not until later. Would you happen to know the Green paint spec/colour reference?
-
Humbrol 88 Deck Green seems the closest match to photos of the era.

BS4800 14C39 was the colour and gloss too which is why ships were covered with dark green anti slip treads or had the metal ones welded on. When wet very slippery.

Thanks Mudway. Didn't realise it was gloss, must have been a b u g g e r to climb up in the wet as you say!

The level of gloss shows up in some photos.
